That showed a lot of compassion for human life. A mistake that could've cost the clerk his own life. There's no telling if the robber could've fired while walking back.
Probably considered it, then remembered how fast the clerk was to the draw. If he was that fast to brandish, he'd probably be that fast to the trigger too. Robber apparently wasn't dumb enough to try and fail twice.
