Robert Lustig, MD discusses his previous presentation at Emery Pharma with the CEO of Emery Pharma, Ron Najafi, Ph.D. In summary, Dr. Lustig discusses the rise of type 2 diabetes in children and challenges the notion that it is a chronic, unrelenting, and genetic disease. He argues that the increase in type 2 diabetes is due to exposure to certain factors, primarily ultra-processed foods containing high amounts of sugar, trans fats, and other substances that affect Liver, the microbiome and promote inflammation. Dr. Lustig also emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between metabolically healthy and unhealthy obesity and suggests biomarkers such as waist circumference, fasting insulin levels, uric acid levels, and ALT levels to assess metabolic health. Regarding statins, Dr. Lustig acknowledges their effectiveness for secondary prevention in individuals who have already experienced a heart attack but questions their use for primary prevention. He mentions that statins can have mitochondrial toxicity and may increase the risk of diabetes. Lastly, Dr. Lustig suggests enjoying desserts in moderation and as an occasional treat, while advocating for the reduction of sugar in processed foods.

Dr Lustig is my new hero. I've read Metabolical and listen to every interview he gives. In six months off sugar, I'm down 28 lbs and for the first time in 70 years, I'm actually really looking forward to my annual bloodwork, and it's all thanks to my willingness to finally be open to advice from an expert.

Love Dr. L. He is looking insulin resistant these days. Maybe not just the fructose. I have heard him say he is not a keto guy. Maybe he should be. My wife is extremely insulin sensitive at age 70 on keto. A1C 5.0, fasting insulin under 5, triglycerides 64, HDL 85. She weighs 190 lbs. All healthy, protective fat. Now if she goes to 250, numbers go to hell.

Hey Dr. L. can you have a word with my sister. She's been a vegetarian for at least 3 decades, has type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, a fatty liver, arthritis in all joints so bad that she has had both her big toes fused, sweats profusely, has incontinence, the list goes on and on. She's on a bucket of pharmaceuticals a day - and her doctors tell her that her diet is perfect, she's done all the right things…

Vegetarians naturally turn to carbs/starches to fill out their vegetable meals, & then a nice desert. There’s her problem. If she avoided sugar like she does meat, she’d be ok.

I am not compelled to agree with the statements that blenders destroy fiber to the extent they no longer supress sugar absorbtion in the gut or provide the normally expected benefits of eating fiber. . What is the difference between chewing food and putting it in a blender? I make a lot of smoothies and unlike juicer machines, the blender leaves in all the fruit texture ... sometimes referred to a roughage. He says in the presentation that the fiber dissappears. Is he claiming that the ground up "roughage" is now fully digested as a suger ? I am not saying he is wrong, just that he needs to present more facts more clearly before he convinces me to stop making vegetable smoothies with hi fiber. ie broccoli, kale, carrots, oranges, lemmons, prunes etc. The fact that he would sling such assertions casually causes him to lose some credibility. Further he refers loosly to "starch" as being better than sugar without being specific when I have read that many "carbs" have as high a Gycomic Index as sugar. Simple or complex? exactly which foods is he referring to as "starches": Lastly he mentions Eggs and Dairy as being non optimal food choices when I have been led to believe they provide good fats and proteins with little sugars if you are not lactose intollerent. Yes I think he is in the big picture correct but these oversights alert me to be cautious as everyone presenting on youtube is presented as an expert. How can you know who to trust ?
