Fun fact: Robert produced this song, and played the bass, percussion, and the really cool xylophone solo in the middle. This is one of his most interesting songs imo, and no doubt he had some hidden talents that he occasionally let it show, as he did on this song

I love this early 80’s MTV “dry sound” that only existed then. Not a lot of over processed studio effects. Just sounds like it was recorded in a living room somewhere. I know that sounds weird but this type of music has it’s own unique charm. In fact, unique and unusual music is what made MTV so insanely popular when it first came out.

The effect reminds me of listening to all of the great 60's mono top 40 hits on my car's tinny AM radio back in high school or the little RCA transistor radio I had as a kid just starting to listen to music. It was the music, not the delivery system, that mattered then...and today.

The music has a clean sound to it....digital recording I think was coming in, as well as synths etc....Loads of great bands had that clean space feel...the Blue Nile spring to mind.

40 bars before he changes the chord, but never loses your interest - then he subverts the whole verse chorus structure - an absolute masterclass in doing it your own way. Salut Robert

I heard this song and tripped out. Back in the day. Later I called the local new wave station and requested it - the lady DJ said he wasn’t new wave but she had noticed his style was changing. I thought it was new wave, and for a couple weeks in 1979 it was my favorite song

I am almost 33 years old, I have been trying to play/practice/study music for 18 years. I didn't really know anything about Robert Palmer or this song up until a few months ago. I heard this song at work but was not sure what it was. When I got home from work I looked up the song and watched this music video, to my surprise these memories started to surface in my mind, maybe the earliest memory I can conjure up today. I was almost too young to remember, I was maybe about 2 years old. I remember this music video was on the TV and my mom was holding me but I was being upset and scared of the image of Robert Palmer holding the magnifying glass up to his mouth. I think that this song had to be one of my moms favorite songs because I remember her dancing and unconcerned with my crying, and I'm not sure but I think she might have kept turning the volume of the music up louder and louder. I know that my mom really wanted me to hear this song because the next thing I remembered was around the time of the xylophone solo I became very mesmerized with everything that I was hearing. I wish that I could explain all of this better but I can't put into words how powerful it was to discover this song again as an adult after my mom passed away in 2020, I guess I like to think that she wanted me to hear this song and remember.

This song is a masterpiece. As soon as I heard it I knew I was in love. It’s avant-pop, odd even for new wave. Perfect hook, perfect synths, accessible but weird, almost a frightened nervous timbre, a singularity. Robert Palmer is an artist’s artist, his legacy as the front man for his girls undersells his enigmatic and diverse career.

This song is a weird one. I love it. It's not just an empty minded pop song: its repetitive structure seems "kraftwerkesque". And above all, the "break" at 1:43 always amazed me... it's the primary reason the song stuck with me in the first place. It's so "out of nowhere", the tempo behind the single strokes slows down by an arbitrary ammount, and then it goes on like nothing happened.... I love that
