One of the most brilliant cinematic experiences I've had in a long time - entirely because of Chris's directing. His writing, however, leaves something to be desired. It really needed the benefit of Jonathan's writing skills. If you've seen Nolan's previous films The Prestige, The Dark Knight, Interstellar, Inception, they all have extremely complex plots - but they aren't as hard for you to follow than this film's, because of Jonathan's superior writing talents.
@Dorkalest
@Dorkalest 4 года назад
I completely agree. Nolan has one of the best eyes and directorial command in the business by far, but he's really not a good writer. Jonathan's the guy to polish down his scripts and Tenet severely needed that touch.
@katelinmarie5360
@katelinmarie5360 4 года назад
@@Dorkalest Yeah, I really can't say for sure, but I did read somewhere that the "controversial" ending of Interstellar was entirely Christopher's idea... and Jonathan wasn't happy about it. It originally had a completely different, less optimistic, far more realistic ending, penned entirely by Jonathan. Christopher threw that ending out, & came up with his own ending - which critics and fans unanimously criticized, once the film was released. And I do recall reading Jonathan publicly stating that the controversial ending had nothing to do with him; he did not agree with the way the film ended. I've noticed since then, Christopher and Jonathan have not worked together.

When you think about it, Rob had a more complicated role than JDW or Elizabeth. He had traveled back and forth much more, and he knew things they didn't know. So I can understand when he's shooting the scene in Oslo for example, he knows much more about how things work and what's worked in the past than JDW does. So it would make his role more complicated for each scene.

@Dorkalest
@Dorkalest 4 года назад
@@impmaximus7584 More than half of the dialogue is exposition-based, which are very hard to hear due to the messy editing including the sound mixing. The story's "complex" and hard to follow for the sake of being confusing and Nolan attempting to be the cleverest, which ends up looking like a couple of abstract thoughts stitched into a "film". The characters are super bland with an impassive tone that makes them hard to like or root except for seemingly saving the world. Oh and it's painfully overlong with incessant periods of people just talking and talking about science, time, physics, artwork, or whatever written pretentiously by Nolan himself. The only good thing about this movie is the action spectacles and cinematography. Other movies have done similar concepts in the past including Minority Report and Primer. Tenet is all style with little substance. Need I say more?

I loved kenneth branagh answer at the end. Brilliant. But this movie is a masterpiece. Its not so complicated and abstract that you cant get it. But its not so simple and mind numbing that you get bored. It keeps you paying attention throughout. You dont learn anything about the characters, for story reasons or for time constraints but they arent just cardboard cutout characters. They all act as gears that make this movie tick and they are lovely to look at because this movie oozes style. Its not james bond kind of style. But a more suave and sophisticates stylishness

I’ve been thinking about how to approach this review on Tenet without giving the impression of bashing the movie or hating on it. Cause I did like this movie but I certainly have a lot to say. Let’s start with this, I was like everyone else with Tenet. I was super excited, who wouldn’t be! Christopher Nolan directing, big budget summer blockbuster, with a complex plot, awesome trailer and a great cast! I’ve been waiting for this movie for a long time and as soon as I found a showtime for my city I decided I had to go. So I saw Tenet and I have to say, this is a Christopher Nolan movie. It has his style of direction all over it. The complex and dense plot, big action spectacles and a long runtime. Will people like it, most likely unfortunate for me not so much. What really bothered me about this movie was the plot and how Nolan told this story. It didn’t feel cohesive or even understandable really but rather very confusing, rushed and the outcome of it all made me question what was the purpose of all that just happened. But a lot of this movie felt like it was trying to be an extravaganza of action scenes, set pieces and dazzling spectacles. Luckily It does accomplish that though, a lot of the times. The action is really well done and does a lot of the spectacles. I just wish that the movie presented a more compelling story, because it felt as though it was kinda trying too. The story, plotting and even sometimes the screenplay felt so jumbled throughout the entire runtime. It tries to be so intellectual and complex but at the end it didn’t succeed at it. Overall Tenet wasn’t as great as I hoped for but, big and sometimes fun action scenes, good acting, sound design, and the look of the movie are all positives for Tenet. I did have some fun with Tenet but wish it was more straightforward with its story and think most people will enjoy it.
@jessicabarrie6201

Christopher Nolan is my favourite director because he never makes the assumption that his audience is stupid. He gives you all the information (usually visually, sometimes verbally too but) without shoving it in your face so that in the third act, you piece everything together yourself, it’s classic Nolan. I think your problem is trying to figure out all the logistics of the film. It literally says in the film to not try to understand how time inversion works and I think if you sat through this film trying to figure it out then it would have ruined it for you. As for the plot being jumbled, it comes with the subject matter that this film is about not to mention that almost all of Nolan’s films have non linear time. I think if you watched the movie again, it would start to make a lot more sense and really feel like it flowed. I’m not trying to bash your opinion, just suggesting that maybe you watched it with the wrong mindset. Everyone thinks you have to be super smart to watch a Nolan film and get it but it’s got nothing to with how smart you are and everything to do with immersing yourself in the world he has created.

John saying that if he could invert time, he would "prevent COVID", proves that he still hasn't understood tenet. If the time gets inverted from this point for him, he would experience COVID all through to December 2019, which would be his future from now. But his time forward self is already experiencing COVID, because there has to be a John in forward for him to actually start the reverse. Now as he goes to 2019, he would need a turn-stile to invert him again, in order to move forward, where he could try to end COVID-19, but he will fail, since we know that COVID-19 has happened and you can't actually change it. Perhaps, he might become the reason for the virus to spread in the first place (which is just speculation)... In short, there will be two forward versions of John experiencing COVID together, meaning the version of John which passed through the turn-stile twice, gets to experience COVID thrice!

i feel that this theory has a huge potential to be true because theres a lot of things that point towards this, for example how he asked the Protagonist at the start of the movie "would you take a kid as a hostage?" then proceeding to ask "would you take a mother as a hostage?" and also how both Kat and Neil are English and have similar accents

I still think Chris Nolan comes second to David Fincher when it comes to mind-blowing films. Post-Prestige Nolan films comes off as too trying in my opinion. I just feel the fans put him too high on the pedestal. If you are into complex-screw-my-brain kinda films. Try watching Primer. The most accurate and realistic and complicated time travel movie.

Intersting comment. I'll try Primer. But Nolan got the hype is probably because of the mix of incredible action with pretty deep movie plot. Also, most or all actions are not im green screen.

Different types of films. Nolan makes more commercial action stuff whereas Fincher is more violent and focused on craft.

It´s not fair to compare Prime with Tenet or other time related films. I´ve watched Primer and, although it is like what you´ve said (most accurate, realistic and complicated), that doesn´t mean it´s a good movie. Primer´s director forgot about the first and most important thing about movies, to entertain. Primer is undoubtedly a mental complex exercise about time travels and it´s consequences, but it doesn´t have that aspect of entertainment that a spectator expect from a movie, not the case of Tenet, or the other time related films, like the great 12 monkeys or Looper. A movie that seemed to me similar to Primer, it´s Coherence. Great movie and accurate (not like Primer but still) and also with a very low budget, the two share the same topic and the fact they aren´t commercial movies but a small director´s project. However, Coherence it´s crafted as an entertainment movie.

3:22 ....Iam a Nolan fan too.....But I don't think this is first time in history to act in reverse.....Indian actor Kamal hassan did reverse acting for an song called NEELA VAANAM in a tamil movie....So sir John David , you are one of the actors who did it.....But definitely not the first.

He's just talking about two characters fighting each other in opposite time directions, not the reverse acting thing.
