I bumped into Robert Plant on Barnes railway station once, back in the mid 80s. He was very polite, warm and easy going, it was nice. Let him live and perform as he wishes. Top bloke!

I saw Robert Plant earlier this year for the third time, and he was PHENOMENAL. One of the best gigs I have ever been to, and his voice gave me goose-bumps. He can’t hit those almost-ultrasonic notes that he used on Communication Breakdown, but then he hasn’t been able to since about ‘73. He can still do those trademark wails, with incredible power, and thanks to his explorations of different kinds of vocal delivery in different genres over the years, I’d say his voice is in technical terms the best it’s ever been. Over the times I have seen him, he has always thrown in some Led Zep and it’s obviously a thrill to hear something like Whole Lotta Love live. But personally I find his new stuff more interesting to hear.. He’s been on a creative roll for the last 15 years or so - why would he throw that all away to reunite Led Zep? Also, I think people forget that Led Zeppelin was actually a pretty tragic time for him. He lost his son, his marriage and, when John Bonham died, a best friend. Not to mention the car crash that meant he recorded the whole of the Presence album in a wheelchair. So his memories of those years must be rather different to those of his fans.

True, but either Page or Jones said in an interview not long after O2 "Robert doesn't want to play loud music anymore", so in that regard it is true, Plant is removed from Zeppelin. The "far" adjective probably doesn't apply, though, I'd agree.

Compare Don Dokken. Couldn’t sing in his prime, even worse now. Plant always had versatility in his voice and that has proved to be the source of his longevity - that and some wise decisions on his post-Zep career, exploring new ideas rather than trying to replicate the sound of the 70s. The quality of what he still does today is a clear sign of how great he was in his prime - a class of his own, but maybe Paul Rogers is up there too: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x6rliRtir6A.html

All the power to Robert, love what he is doing with Allison and you can see he is enjoying where he is at, at this stage of life. Like actors hated to be stereo typed cast, I feel that is how Robert or any of the surviving members of Led Zeppelin are feeling when they are asked these ridiculous questions of reforming.
@mcolville

If people want more Led Zeppelin, they should just go check out NO QUARTER and Walking Into Clarksdale. No Quarter especially is phenomenal. Otherwise, it's clear that Robert Plant doesn't see the stuff he did in his teens and 20s to be relevant to where he is now. Perfectly reasonable. Shit, I wouldn't want to be stuck LISTENING to the stuff I loved at 23 for the rest of my life, I can't imagine being on the hook to perform it nightly.

I remember reading an interview with Robert saying that after his son died, he starting looking around at what Zeppelin had become and wondered what the point of it was. Fact is, he'd gotten older, been through some stuff, and was a different person. He couldn't play the swaggering rock god forever, and he knew it. I think compared to a lot of rock vocalists (Vince Neil, Jon Bon Jovi, Paul Stanley, etc) he's aged rather gracefully.

@@mr.brenman2132 I would say as a blues wailer, he treated his instrument better than some. I was surprised when he quit smoking cigarettes; he had previously suggested a little smoking puts a rock and roll edge on your vocals and he was getting a reputation as being incorrigible in the early days of smoking restrictions. As a singer hs "little bag of tricks" has only kept getting bigger, he has grown to become a much better singer, with more vocal skills, he is much more than simply a blues wailer now. He can still, upon occasion, reach those higher notes, as bit of garnish here and there, but he can't do a whole song in that range. Keep in mind, the man is 74 years old. No one should expect his vocal chords to be like they were when he was 20., or even as they were at 40. But the caress of his voice is none the less enchanting.

I also think that while we, the fans, may want to hear this musician play these songs forever? They are still human and want to grow in their career, hobby, and other loves just like we do. I love some of Plant's music and if I don't? Oh well. He gave us some great music and now he's giving fans of another genre some great music.

Years ago, here in Australia, I toured with a band called Powderfinger around Australia a couple of times, DJing in between each band's set and the singer Bernard Fanning, while we were on the road, gave me a copy of a Led Zepplin record - a brown cover, I cannae think of the name of the record, but it's got "Fool in the Rain"on it. It is Bernard's favourite song and it was such a great gift! I have treasured it always (despite not knowing the name of the record haha) and I got to include in the set before they went on stage, which I reckon (hopefully) created a good vibe for them and the crowd. The legacy of Led Zepplin (bands such as Powderfinger were hugely influenced by them) is massive and if Robert Plant doesn't want to tarnish that legacy because it doesn't make him happy to bust those songs out then, bloody hell, let him enjoy his life. The man lit the fire, it's up to musicians after him to keep it going...

I was at a concert Robert did about 15 years ago in a small venue in Edinburgh with his then band Strange Sensation. It was an absolute treat. He began by saying "it such a treat to still be able to perform, at my age you are usually sitting in a rocking chair in some comfy slippers". Classic.

Plant owes Led Zep's fans (myself included) absolutely nothing! He and his bandmates made some of the most incredible music ever created, toured relentlessly, and set the bar so high that no one will ever clear it. If you paid for the albums, or bought concert tickets, then you got what you were 'owed'. If you weren't old enough, or even alive yet, to see Led Zeppelin perform, then that's just too bad. I have nothing but the highest respect for Robert because he is sticking to his guns, not taking the very easy money (which estimates put in the hundreds of millions of dollars), and choosing to pursue the artistic direction which makes him happy. 🤘🏽🤘🏽

Robert Plant - integrity and dignity come to mind. He already did the Led Zeppelin reunion show in 2007. I saw him four years ago and he was Sensational with the Space Shifters and sang a few Zeppelin songs and sounded just great. He has actually protected the Led Zeppelin legacy, look at bands like The Police - it was anticlimactic when they cashed in or KISS or the greedy Eagles - choosing money over dignity.

I saw Zep play back in the day and it was genuinely magical, I didn't even watch their 2007 reunion for the same reason that seeing the Pistols reunion in 1996 was not seeing the actual Sex Pistols, I would have had to watch them in '76-'77 for that, it was just a very good tribute act performed by the original members.

@@TheVideoLounge I have been a Zep fan since about 1970, I saw Plant and Page live in '98, and I saw the O2 concert in the theater. Jason Bonham was and is the only drummer who could have pulled off that show. The dear man had trained since a child with his main focus to fill his Dad's shoes one day, and miracle of miracles, despite scepticism and naysayers, he did. Their last show was a fabulous performance, with an amazing story. They left on a high note, as it were, ending the Zeppelin legacy with a show they can feel proud of, a kind of encore... or coda...that was a wish come true for millions of people.

I saw the Eagles 3 times over the past 5 or 6 years and yes, they are greedy because they were the most expensive tickets I have ever bought, but they still sounded amazing and I'm glad I was able to see them, at least they can still play their catalog almost exactly the same as when they were recorded. He started on a different path after John Bonham and to be fair to him, it is a path which has still brought him great success. He was, is, and always will be exactly who he wants to be, and not who others would like him to be. People should respect him for that. The 1970 Royal Albert Hall live footage is still mind-blowing to watch. The sheer power erupting from the stage is palpable even on film. Raw Led Zeppelin, especially Plant's vocals. .. Watch that, then watch Led Zeppelin's 1977 Seattle show, recorded less than a decade later (also posted elsewhere on RU-vid). This may be an unpopular take but I think it has its merits: The vocal demands of Led Zeppelin's music, on record but ESPECIALLY touring relentlessly during their first years, arguably caused Plant to permanently damage his vocal chords. You can hear the difference between their 4th LP and Houses of the Holy. Robert can still hit the higher register but they're becoming more reedy in timbre. More nasal, less diaphragm. More reverb and other embellishments are used on Houses' vocal mix too, as on their follow up; Physical Graffiti. Allegedly Plant had his tonsils removed in the early 70s, but that procedure doesn't typically change ones' voice. I'm convinced he had either ruptured his vocal chords, or developed polyps that required surgery. Either of those could affect ones voice permanently. This is an extremely common condition, especially among singers (even more, untrained ones), public speakers, etc. It often leaves the person afflicted with loss of higher register, as well as a slight rasp in their delivery. (see: Harry Nilsson). Consider the fact that Led Zeppelin's touring schedule was not only brutal, but their shows ran long. 2 1/2 to 3 hours, and with it a lot of improvisational vocal gymnastics that Jimmy Page loved to push into. The music Page wrote for the band demanded it, and Plant obliged like a pro for as long as he could. To his credit, Robert Plant eventually cultivated a more seasoned style, and a delivery more subtle than the wailing bluesman of his youth. He really did outgrow that persona. The Celebration Day concert was a great closure. An opportunity for Plant to deliver still solid Zeppelin vocal performances, but without the pressure of having to execute that same level of delivery on tour for 7 months, at a different venue every other evening. Regardless of any of the above being provable, I don't blame Robert Plant one bit for closing the chapter on live Led Zeppelin gigs. It should be his choice.

I feel like Rob is paying homage to where he came from, bluesgrass, blues and jazz are the foundations of rock and roll and Plant has always paid homage to these in his music, perhaps this is actually closer to what he always wanted to than Zeppelin was. It really threw me when he started working with Krauss, I've watched her growing up in bluegrass and I'm loving them together.

I've seen Robert solo 3 times since 2005 and each time he does his reworked versions of Zeppelin songs, and they're bloody brilliant. At the last show however, he did a pure performance of The Rain Song and honestly and it was the pinnacle of my concert going life.

Being born in the 50’s, I’ve enjoyed LZ music for a long time. I do enjoy the two Alison Krause albums as well - introduced me to a new style of music and the two of them harmonize really well together. It’s great that Robert Plant is doing things on his own terms, long may he continue!

I live just a few miles from Robert Plant and have met him in my local pub and he is a regular when at home. I dont know him and he is not a friend but he has said goodbye to me once when I left. I went to the same grammar school as he did and was their when he was their but two years lower. He is just a decent person who just likes to relax and keeps out of the limelight when he is home. I have had the pleasure of being their when he has picked up the mic and performed with a few members of his regular band and he is amazing. He is now doing what he wants to do and works within the voice he has now which is still a great voice and his sense of timing and delivery is exceptional. He is now enjoying himself and any person in their 70s is entitled to that.

I remember seeing an interview with RP, and that he hated how the Led Zeppelin management made him sing the songs with LZ, and that when he went solo, Big Log and 29 Palms were the kick back against that. I'm sure there would be a fan appetite for more Zeppelin concerts, but it would only be a few rich people, as per your post a few weeks ago, about the people going to see Springsteen and the like, could afford to see them!! People should just accept his decision, and stop badgering him about it!! You can't force him!! 🤷🏻‍♂️

Long before the official release was out, there were audience recordings of the show and there even is a raw soundboard recording of their dressed rehearsal - long story short: no vocal post - gig overdubbing. Robert did what he is doing since the early 90s up until now: when switching into doing some "belting out" he turns on a delay effect to make it sound more powerful and "full". But that's the only 'trickery' he does. I personally think that's totally fine and a "trickery" in that sense because he's actually singing the notes behind the delay effect... and let's be honest, even that needs a lot of skill because there's nothing more embarrassing than having a voice crack or voice mishap while a delay effect is turned on 😂

+ he seems confident and happy within his recent project and the current style of singing, while being different to his younger years, still sounds amazing. He still has one of the best character singing /story teller voices out there. I think from all the older singers, he's the one who adapted the best to a life changing experience that's called getting old and still making it sound cool.

Very well said, Justin. I couldn’t agree more. I was for many years a Led Zeppelin nut. I rarely listen to their records now, partly because they’re part of my musical DNA. But they will always occupy a special place in my heart. But do I want them to reform? Absolutely, 100%, categorically NOT. What would be the point, other than to generate container loads of cash? If we’re being honest, the creative energies of Led Zeppelin were starting to splutter by 1975. Most of their great work had been done before that date. Robert Plant’s car accident and the later loss of his son coupled with the addiction problems of Page, Bonham and Grant meant that their remaining active years from 1976-1980 were a shadow of what had gone before. Does anyone seriously think that had they continued making records into the ‘80s they’d have hit the heights of their glory years? So, so unlikely. Led Zeppelin defined 1970s rock; its look, its sound, its behaviours. How would they have fared in the MTV era in which mystique was gradually eroded to the point where constant access and media presence was the order of the day? It went against everything they had stood for. In a sense their disbanding in 1980 was the best thing that ever happened to them in terms of their legacy. Their final album was sub-par but by no means a stinker. They bowed out when they were still young and sexy. Their legend was intact but dormant. The first few years of the ‘80s saw them fall almost completely out of favour - if you professed to liking Zeppelin in 1984 you were regarded as if you’d just trodden shit all over someone’s carpet. It was only with the release of their box set retrospective in 1990 that their music began to be given the credit it so undoubtedly deserved. Robert Plant for the most part concentrated on his solo career despite its meagre success sales-wise. Being a wise soul, he knew that squeezing lemons was a young man’s game. The Page and Plant shows in the ‘90s worked a treat because they cleverly reworked the old songs to bring out new flavours and approaches that didn’t rely on his old rock god image. He is content to work on new projects and - while rightly proud of Zeppelin’s legacy - doesn’t feel the need to tread the boards doing a pale facsimile of his 25-year-old self. Thank goodness he is as he is - he serves the legacy of Led Zeppelin far better by letting sleeping dinosaurs lie. I have huge respect for him for that.

Robert Plant has nothing to prove to anyone. That is a prime indicator of someone who is utterly centered in their own chi. The fact that he is still making exceptional new music and still performing (and owning the stage) should be enough for us. The times I have seen him perform are some of my fondest memories...and let's be honest; the man could sing me my grocery list and I'd be weak-kneed, fanning myself, and having palpitations over in the corner. 😉😁

I like the majority or RP's solo stuff, The Mighty Rearranger is a fave, and I really like his newer stuff with Alison Kraus, if I got the opportunity to see him live again I would not hesitate. After cringing beyond recognition with the Live Aid reunion, and the 40th Atlantic Anniversary, it was a sigh of relief that the 02 Arena show in 2007 went off mostly without a hitch. Best to leave it on a high note, as it were. I am a huge Led Zeppelin fan, but Page's live performances have been hit or miss. (His tour with the Black Crowes afforded him additional guitarists, which was a blessing.) It would be a roll of the dice reunite and potentially tarnish that legacy. Fans in concert , are very in the moment, and can be very forgiving. Live Aid, again was a shambles, but everyone there was in the moment, freaking out that it was actually happening. When I saw the video of the performance the next day, I thought perhaps it was best that I hadn't watched it. Plant clearly doesn't need the money, and is able to follow his muse. Good on him.

I asked him where his tour bus was and he pointed at this Aston Martin as he had driven to the venue.
