she is a true legend Roberta flack what a voice what a beautiful sad song jesse come home takes me back to when I was kid in the late seventies and early eighties . and hearing that classic song on radio 2 .for kids back then music had a meaning and feeling and understanding . nowadays kids have to listening to singers with noise sound effects and no meaning within their songs. I am glad I am not a kid anymore .

This is her concert appearance with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in Edmonton, 1975. Beautiful performance by Roberta, moving and expressive. I prefer this live version. What a gorgeous song. Been a fan of her all my life. My respects and esteem added to the rest. What a treasure of a singer.

Do you notice the immensely difficult alternating measure and her offbeat singing especially in the beginning of the song? I wonder how you can play this with ease and flawlressly in a live setting?! I am a full-blown full-time pianist & singer myself. I couldn't do it. She is so far out and oustanding and her musicians too!

+PianoGesang Did you happen to see the documentary on Roberta? It's really god. It explains her musical background. She was a music major and graduated from Howard U. She was classically trained and was a school teacher. It does explain her voice..in a way...

This has always been one of my favorite Janis Ian songs. This cover by Roberta Flack is beautiful, and it's Ms. Flack's version that made the song a hit, but you might be surprised at how much you like the song done by the songwriter herself -- it's stunning, too.

Mats Nilsson, I got to see Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway perform together at an outdoor concert in DC in 1972. She had just finished a big tour and talked about how happy she was, getting time to rest and be with her family, and it showed. (It turned out that she had grown up in Green Valley, about a mile or two from where I was living at the time, and I drove past her house there on my way to work every morning.) That is one of the most memorable live performances I can remember attending. They were great together. It was so sad that he died so young. (Judy E, if you even remember me, I'm sorry I was such a clueless jerk who did not know any better, but I remember you, too.)

I love Janis Ian, but this song, for me, will always belong to Roberta Flack. The longing in her voice pulls me in and I feel like I'm there too, waiting for Jesse, who may or may not return home. That open ending story telling is what separates Janis Ian from other song writers. Her story telling is always relatable and is pure and simple, but reaches deep into my soul. There is just something about Roberta's interpretation that makes me weep.

On this day in 1973 {September 22nd} Roberta Flack's "Jesse" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #30 and spent 9 weeks on the Top 100... It was surrounded by #1 records; Ms. Flack's two previous charted records both reached #1, "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" {#1 for 6 weeks} and "Killing Me Softly With His Words" {#1 for 5 weeks}... And then her next release after "Jesse" was "Feel Like Makin' Love", which was #1 for one week...

this song became even more special for me when Ms Flack sang the song after i screamed "Jesse!!" in a quiet auditorium after she finished singing. She responded with a gentle, "I beg your pardon", and i screamed even louder "Jesse", next thing, she started playing the piano and started singing Jesse. Needless to say my concert attendance was complete and my heart was whole because its my ultimate favourite song of hers.

i am so blessed to have all your kind words. we also lost a 5 year old girl to cancer in our family. being the older one meant these two followed me like shadows and repeated everything I said. those were some of the happiest times in my life and that love has never been replaced. bless you all. you made me smile knowing people understand.

Listened to Janis Ian, the composer and lyricist of "Jesse", last night. Both ladies put passion and pathos into their rendition. Roberta had a more melodic voice, but Janis evoked the pain and longing more eloquently, at least in my opinion. I think each person hears and feels song renditions in different ways, depending on life experiences. No matter who sings this song, it is beautiful, haunting and full of longing for a lost, long gone lover.

I remember loving this song! Roberta's voice is so soothing and amazing! It was Jesse Jackson, that she was having an affair with and sung about! This meant more to her. If you go back and google, Jesse Jackson and Roberta Flack had affair for many years. She got his daughter into the singing arena for a while.
