Roberto Duran documentary ESPN mano de piedra analysis by many boxing journalist sugar ray leonard ken buchanan esteban dejesus davey moore benny leonard panama
I followed Duran since the mid 70s and even to this day there hasnt been a better fighter ,he had defense, he was a fierce puncher ,and body puncher ,he could win fights with his stare, his head movement was unbelievable ,winning 5 different titles ,fought championships for decades ,Destroyed Dejesus,.Cuevas Palomino.Davey Moore, his 2nd fight w Leonard was as he said Im not fighting this clown ,he fought for another 20 yrs there has never been a fighter ,an all time great ,..like Duran
too much machismo, Duran will fight you where ever and when ever. Don king stole a lot of money from Duran and made him signed a lot of fights that Duran should not had taken because Don king wants money from other boxers and saw Duran weak since he likes to party, however Duran never talked trash about Don king o even worst accused him. This shows how humble was him.
Duran was just fearless! Yes, he was Hands of Stone! He was more than a tiger when Fighting Sugar Ray Leonard in the first fight . Leonard was surprised cause no one was ever so argressive like Duran ,!
Is so sad people call Duran a coward , this is the men who came from nowhere start his first fight at 126 just to put food for his family and moved up to 168 and became the people champion.
the hands of stone in his prime was the greatest lightweight ever and is in the top 5 p4p fighters ever yes manos de piedra was a unique fighter there may never be another duran ever.
I love Duran and he is no doubt Top 10 Pound for Pound all Time imo however, Joe Gans and Benny Leonard were also 135 pounders and they too are Pound for Pound Top 10 all time, so I can’t say with confidence Duran is Defacto #1 but I’d love to see those guys go at it
What most don’t realize. Is that my hypothesis of that fight reflected what was opposite of each other. Duran underdog poor struggle no glamor no glory. Fighting sugar ray the American Dream and all its glory. That was Durans Achilles heal. It’s why Duran lost the second fight. No motivation. He killed his enemy the first fight. Second fight didn’t have a reason.
Roberto Duran beat Ray Leonard mentally, emotionally, and physically in their first fight. That was a close, great fight but "Manos de Piedra" was not to be denied that night. 🔥💪
Duran was in No way the same fighter that fought the first time. He put forth the blueprint to beat a great boxer. When in that type of shape as in the first fight he cannot be beat. In your face and forcing you to fight every second!
Duran was a savage.. plane and simple boys!!! And a skilled killer too boy.. hes like a savage surgeon if there us such a thing.. ge was a surgeon about being a savage. Sugar ray talks about how hard he was to hit..he says he didnt know he was such a good boxer. It's cool to hear sugar talk about it
@colesy3693 How about this to clarify the difference between Duran and Mamby? Saoul Mamby was the 1st boxer to fight in 5 different decades. Roberto Duran was the 1st boxer to fight and win in 5 different decades. Not trying to split hairs here, but I believe we all agree Mamby is not a top 10 boxer, or an all time great p4p fighter, like the great Roberto Duran!
I've seen so many people analyze this rematch, Let me explained what happened Duran was received by 200 thousand people when got off the plane in Panama after the first fight he was received like royalty and he partied up until the rematch, Leonard insisted on a rematch 3 mo after the fight which Duran's handlers should have insisted on 6 months later at the minimum, giving Duran a chance to get the partying out of his system but the Leonard Camp was always a thinking camp and knew a quick rematch would favor a trained disciplined Leonard. And that's exactly why Duran quit he knew if he could not catch him in the early rounds he would not catch him in the later rounds and would be made to look like a fool and he ended up looking bad anyways with the No Mas !
It's true Duran weighed 220 lb. 2 months before the fight, they gave him diuretics, Duran's handler was a merchant, they deposited him 8million in a bank he did not care that Duran was not going to be prepared
VAMOS A PATRULLAR.... ¡SHALOM!
Hagler failed to beat Ray,Hearns failed to beat Ray,Benitez failed to beat Ray.Duran thge former lightweight the only one out of them that can claim"I beat Sugar Ray Leonard in his prime and natural weight class. He is a Legend and the greatest Latin fighter that ever lived.
this is the true..duran was the best light welter weight champion on the whole world..no one could stop him so many knock outs .. ..duran move to be welter weight to face sugar..thats why duran coulnt knock sugar out..if this fight wouldn't be on duran weight I am sure sugar ray will end up out in 4 rounds maximum.. there is no one like duran...5 world diferent weights champion more than 100 fights.. duran the champion of the latino countries..
@adrenacrumb I agree. From that era my favorites were Hagler and Duran real warriors....I wouldn't put Hagler on top of Duran just cause He defeated Duran at Middleweight (Haglers weight) and Duran still gave him hell. so I put them as equal. Sugar Gay Leonard also had the pacquiao syndrome back then, getting favored by the judges cuz he was the sport of boxing needed media star.
@jason60152 (contd) IMO, PBF is not exciting fighter & he lost 1st bout to Castillo - no doubt! Injuries are part of boxing. Duran's only loss at135lb when he boxed with flu. PBF's "tactics" (tricks) to keep foes f/ landing solid shots wouldn't stop a canny, strong Duran. Duran boxed to destroy his foes. PBF boxes so as not to lose. RD savage & graceful in ring, esp 1975-78. I am convinced that RD's exp, power & savvy get thru PBF's tactics & break him down - TKO or UD - RDuran wins!
Wow I knew Mike Tyson said Duran was his hero. But dang now that I really study how Duran fought I see the similarities in Duran and Tyson especially in the bop and weaving defense. Very similar style in fighting even in attitude as well.
My fondest childhood memories are watching boxing with my dad, and no matter who was fighting he'd always give praise when it was due but say "he'd never last against Duran!" Wasn't until I was older and RU-vid became a valuable source of old fights I understood what he meant! Duran is easily top 5 pound for pound!
@jason60152 In your most recent post you explicitly accuse me of a type of "racism". What type of "racism" are you accusing me of? You have contradicted yourself. I do not like the behavior of V. Pazienza or H. Camacho and I do not respect either Paz or Macho Man. Does that mean I am am biased against whites & hispanics? My favorite boxers are Duran, Ali, Hagler, Hearns, Chavez, Leonard & Whitaker. What does this mean? I like boxers on style & demeanor, not skin color, as you claim!
Sugar Ray never beat Duran sec fight Suger Ray just ran and ran and ran .. Duran was in there for a fight not a disco dance . Sugar ray couldn’t stand toe to toe with Duran that’s why he decided to run around the ring like a coward
@jason60152 There is no way to know but, IMO, at lightweight after becoming a complete off. & def. fighter under Arcel & Brown , I think RDuran would beat PBFloyd by cutting of ring, landing rock hard body shots, slowing down PBFloyd by diminishing his foot & hand speed. Then, RD gets PBF against ropes (more so in mid to later rds) & wins by TKO or UD. Duran was called "Hands of Stone" w/good reason. Also, iron chin & could take shots to deliver his bombs!. Ergo, RDuran beats PBFloyd at lgtwgt.
@jason60152 You can"t know that SRLeonard is on my top 10 p4p of all time list because he's not. I would rate SRL a/17 & I rate him that high because h/ career was cut short due to serious eye injury. He came back for a few big fights didn't deserve 2 titles for beating Lalonde at catchwgt. I do not have enuff time to reply to all your queries tonite. Also, LMerchant & others on TV dislike PBF's persona & I think most of public doesn't like PBF's boxing (unexciting) or arrogance. (2bcont.)
@darlinchav Yes! He goes to all the trouble of pronouncing Duran's name with his NY accent in Spanish; then says Duran, in their first fight, gave Leonard a whuppin'. What a ham! - lol -
@jason60152 Do you have an opinion as to why PBF is so rarely penalized for illegal use of his elbows? Ortiz complained to referee about PBF's elbowing but to no avail. Moreover, PBF uses his elbows to keep push opponents away; and, as a striking surface. I have heard him warned numerous times but penalized only once, in 1st bout with Castillo. By the way, do you think Castillo won; or, at least fought a draw with PBF? I look forward to your replies & answers to specific questions. Cheers.
@jason60152 I watched a number of PBF fights, as you suggested. If you think Duran couldn't box, watch his bout w/Vilomar Fernandez, his 3rd bout w/DeJesus, & h/bout w/c Palomino at welterweight. Be realistic - Cotto l/PBF now. signed w "Golden Boy" promotions. This is why Oscar has bn singing praise of PBFs abilities. If PBF loses now, it's "all in house" & Goldn By Promos wins; no matter who wins! Duran was more creative in ring than JC & a bigger, strnger boxer. Please answer all my ?s..
@jason60152 I wii tell you this: I am almost 64 yrs. old & I served as an infantryman - "grunt"- MOS 11B20 - in Vietnam f/mid 68 to mid 69. My closest friend - my partner - w/whom I shared "fighting holes" (foxholes) was black. In war, for t/fighting man, race & color mean nothing! There is no bias in the bush or in an infantry squad or platoon. My favorite boxer after Duran is Ali, Hagler, Frazier and THearns because I saw them fight on TV & closed circuit big screens. You are (contnd.)
@jason60152 I went to RU-vid & watched some PBF matches. He doesn't move as much or as quickly as SRL. He uses a shoulder roll, elbow(s) on foes upper chest/neck, holds, sticks out one arm, etc. These tactics, IMO, could not keep a 135 lb. Duran from closing distance & landing heavy shots. Duran expert at getting by these "tactics" & uses h/elbows, shoulders, superior strength & ability to hit wpower from all angles. PBF is a cautious boxer, who is cautious & takes no chances.. (contd.)
One of boxing's biggest misconception is that Duran quit against Leonard outta fear or because of what was being inflicted on him in the ring. Truth be told, he quit because in his mind, Leonard was clowning him, running and according to him [Duran] he wanted to fight. Taking nothing from Leonard cause he was definitely schooling him, but Duran quit outta of frustration and embarrassment (Leonard refusing to fight) not because he couldn't take the ass whooping! That narrative couldn't be farther from the truth. Regardless quiting is quiting, I just didn't like the spin of the American press running their narrative, that he simply quit unprovoked. This narrative gave birth and was a direct result of boxing historians taking it upon themselves to re-write boxing history as they saw it instead of how it really happened! Hence giving birth to the "no mas" comment. They took advantage of him and the language barrier, being that the fight took place in the United States. This break down in communication caused him to be labeled as a coward. Fast forward 50 yrs. and still the same narrative "no mas!" Him having never uddered those words! They once asked the great Julio Ceasar Chavez "who was the greatest latino fighter ever?" His answer "Roberto Duran!" They asked Duran the same question, his answer? "Julio C. Chavez!"
I think anyone who says that 'Leonard was a boxer and Duran was a fighter' doesn't know anything about boxing. Boxing is a lot more than the jabbing, flurries, and dancing that Leonard excelled at. Duran was far more skilled at feints, rolling off punches, ducking, head movement, bobbing and weaving, pursuit, and punching power than Leonard was. I'm not taking anything away from Leonard, he was great; but Duran was a much better boxer at the time of their first fight, despite being much smaller than Leonard and being a little past his prime athletic years. Duran knew boxing as well as anyone, and was one of the most skilled ever. His only fault was his lack of discipline between bouts, but his still managed to have one of the longest and most successful careers of all time.
the fucking build on Duran was impressive at Lightweight! simply the Greatest bar none at that specific weight; and 1 of the Greatest ever produced overall in the sport of Boxing!
I love these critics they have on some of the boxing docs. Most of these critics do not know a thing about boxing. Brawling implies crude - Duran was NOT a crude fighter.
No exageres...
Sugar is the only boxing historian I'm not annoyed when he waxes poetic. Unlike these new ytbc play by play channels with all these mediocre analysis of old fights trying to explain in slow motion with subtitles boxers technique. Just put the footage on and let the viewers enjoy.
No diss to Buchanan but he prob saved him. Duran was already whooping his ass and still had a lot of steam to go in the last rounds if he had. I think Duran was annoyed and just wanted to get it over it cause he was gonna win anyway lol
@jason60152 First of all, I commented on PBF hitting a woman because u asked me why I thought "PBF doesn't have a warrior's heart". Compare Chavez's record, SRRob., Pep, Marciano & others with long strings of many more consecutive fights as undefeated to PBF's. Sure, PBF made a lot of money but he will not be remembered among the top 10 or even 20 greatest boxers of all time. He is not "loved & idolized" by boxing fans as a "warrior"; as were the boxers I listed, plus many more ....
In 83 when he beat moore was the best man..he really did just beat him freaking hard core.. I wonder what dave thought after that beat down.. you know he never dreamed hed actually lose to duran.. noway he did..
@jason60152 PBF is a self - centered, man/child who loves money & celebrity. IMO, boxing is a way to acheive fame & fortune for him. A male warrior will fight only other men. No man who has a "warrior's heart" would ever hit a woman, especially a womwn he claims to love. There are only two subjects PBF like to talk about: himself and how deserving - he - is; of more money & more acclaim. PBF is afraid of losing because that is his ONLY "claim to greatness"! Warriors do not think of losing.
@jason60152 I saw the 2nd fight. To his disgrace RD did not live as a top tier boxer should have & SRL in shape for rematch.. RD not as good at welterweight & didn't have as much power as he did as lgtwgt. Forget Duran's bouts above 135 lbs. His performance, power & proficiency at 135 lbs only; at issue here. IMO, Duran hit too hard, from many angles & was unbeatable as a lgtwgt Champ. He beats PBFloyd at his best weight. PBF does not have warrior's heart & love to fight like "Cholo"!
