In this 'How Champions Trains' we delve into the world of Roberto Duran - The Hands of Stone! I look at his routine, lessons from his trainers, the mistakes he made, and his animal-winning mentality!
*Always get advice from a professional coach or nutritionist before taking on any training plan. This video is to educate about what Duran did. Not what you should do exactly.

Folks don’t realize how great Duran was. He jumps 2 weight classes after going 69-0 at lightweight and wiping out the division. Loses one fight at a catchweight then beats that guy twice beats leoanrd a younger bigger faster younger welterweight who as noted is number 1 p4p at the time. Then he loses to Hearns. Hearns gets stomped by Barkley twice and then Duran kicks Barkley’s ass. Loses to beneitez - another bigger younger faster guy with far fewer miles and as a massive underdog smashes top guys like Cuevas, Moore. Beat Barkley after Moore actually. Then as a long regining lightweight and after all those wars moves to 160 and pushes possibly the greatest middleweight of all time to the brink. Now what lightweight in the history of game goes 15 with Hagler and nearly beats him? How many lightweights in history beat Leonard? There is a very serious argument Duran is the GOAT.

People only look at 80s Duran when analyzing his legacy. Duran's prime was in the 70s, and we have very little footage of it. Prime Duran was a boxing machine.

This is exactly the same with Tyson. People just see a brawler. They really lack understanding of boxing. Both were great at slipping punches just to get on the inside to deal heavy blows. People just don’t realize the technical skill to do that kind of stuff. Technical brawlers are amazing to watch.

They don't make them like Duran anymore in my opinion. I would love to have met him. He had hunger in his eyes, I have not seen that stare in many people's eyes. I am old now and not well myself like him and every time I watch a video about him I can't help but have tears in my eyes because I loved watching him fight and just the way he carried himself. Bless you Mr.Roberto Duran and hope you get well and stay well.

The biggest issue, not just with Duran, but a lot of athletes over a whole spectrum of sports is simply not staying in shape year round Kobe himself said,“I’m always training, I’m always preparing, I’m always practicing for the game.” He could go out and play whenever he needed to because he was always physically prepared That being said, you can't take anything from Duran. His record speaks for itself

I recently found out he was half Mexican. He never knew his Mexican side being his dad so he identified solely as Panamanian since that was his world. I always thought he looked more Mexican than Panamanian and now I know why. I’m starting to think it’s something in their genes that makes them such good fighters. He appeared to be a hybrid, taking the best of every element of Latin American boxing style

His dad was a US army soldier of Mexican heritage at the canal. He knew who he was just was born and bred into the fighter he was in Panama. I think in Hands of Stones he said he met his dad and extended family at some fight in the States

@@ArmandoAlejandro2014 I think he meant he didn’t know (no conocía) the Mexican side of his family, but yeah he was definitely aware (lo sabía) he was Mexican. That’s funny, that’s one example where spanish is way more clear (conocer vs saber) than English (using “know” for both).

one question I have always wondered is why duran when training makes a yelp kind of sound, its hard to explain but when he punched he did a loud yelp instead of a normal exhale like other boxers, I heard from a commentator that its similar to a native indian yelp and that he does it to throw his opponent off, i dunno tbh I just thought I should ask.

I wrestled from age 5 through the end of my collegiate career (so 15 plus competitive years) and making weight was always looming somewhere in the back of my mind. I would literally wake up in cold sweats after having the nightmare where I failed to make weight… To be clear, I am talking about 5-7 pounds, maybe 10-12 if I really let myself go and shedding that amount was hellacious! I can’t even begin to imagine attempting a 50+ pound cut without medical supervision and ample time for physiological adaptation. It wasn’t until I was in my late 30’s that I began to realize just how much damage one inflicts upon themselves by consistently dropping 10 or more pounds in a matter of days, putting it back on, cutting it, ad nauseam. Duran and many of his contemporaries were the last of their breed, I’m thrilled that younger generations have the opportunity to witness some of the greats from the golden era of boxing.

Yamil Chade got Plomo to trian Wilfredo Gomez when he turned pro, explicitly to teach him how to walk the ring better, cut off the ring and stay off the ropes. Duran is the best Panamanian fighter of all times but before him was Laguna and Maravilla Pinder, bantamweight who fought and beat the great Mexican bantamweights of the time. These guys were not the punchers Duran was but were masterful boxers

@derekvandenburg6689 I don't think so. Duran would have cut off the ring, crowded him and pounded him to the body. Don't forget Duran was great defensively. How do ypu explain a man who started if at 118 pounds fight a guy like Barkley who later fought at heavyweight, and winning. Defense is great, but Floyd would have had a guy who was great bith offensively and defensively. Flood could hurt Duran. Duran would have walked through and just sounded and box him. Yeah Duran could box too.

Him and Ali were my favorites’ Duran had a aura about him ‘ he had that look that was just intimidating’ as far as training ‘ he probably needed the breaks to enjoy himself ‘ but that’s harder to do when you get older ‘ and he was training just to lose weight to make the cut ‘ so he was weight drained for a lot of fights ‘ such as the hearns fight

Pardon a potentially ignorant question, but if he was cutting from 200 to 154, and (understandably) struggling with it, would it have made sense for him to fight in a heavier weight class? Or was that extra ~50lbs all just blubber from the partying?

Tell you a little secret... I met s Panamian trainer in Montréal that had trained as a young kid alongside Roberta, who was also a young kid. The heavy training was outside the gym. In fsct it was initially an elimination process to rid 90% of the potential students of that trainer. At the beach there was an elevated tree stump that they had to jump off performing a flip... Most got hurt. You mention his squatting while skipping like a Russian. In fact the trainer would point to a mountain and they all had to do a jumping duck walk to the top. Look at his legs, Tyson also... Of course that type of brutal training is hard to maintain. Cheers 🍻

If Duran had Manny Pacqiao's mentality outside the ring he could have been even greater than he was. It was obvious that he was not inspired when he fought Leonard in the second fight and it was really noticeable against Wilfred Benitez. Despite this it is undeniable he was one of the greatest fighters to ever enter the ring. I compare him to Cesar Julio Chavez but with more athletic ability and ring generalship.
