When experts talk about greatest lightweight ever Duran is usually the first one mention and second by the others. Duran fought from 130 to 168 and won titles at 135, 147, 154, 168 . Duran skipped 140 to fight Palamino , Benetiz, or Leonard or he would have won the title at 140 as well. Duran is a legend in boxing.
Roberto Duran one of the all time greats. He was probably the best lightweight in history. My dad and I just loved the “Hands of Stone.” He knew how to wear a fighter down and close out a fight.
Duran, in his prime especially, was the complete package and consumate pro, unbeatable. Could fight coming forward and going backward. Could punch and could take a punch. Could box on the outside and on the inside. Was hard to hit, yet was very accurate when hitting. Could fight at a slow or a fast pace. Was patient and precise. Great endurance and resilience. Could fight with his back against the ropes. Great balance, distance, and timing. Just the perfect warrior. Simply unbeatable.
You called Duran a "consumate pro"? How? He was a good fighter, but is extremely overrated. He had terrible defense and got his head beat in most fights against top guys like Hagler, Benitez and especially Hearns. Almost got his head knocked off. Hell, he lost to Kirkland Laing during his prime years because he had no defense. Squeaked by Leonard the first time, I'll give him that, but that fight could have gone either way. Consummate? Hardly. Tough, yes.
@@romanmoroni2785 Lmao Duran didn't have Benitez, Whitaker or Mayweather defense but his defense was great especially for someone who fought on the inside with a pressure style. For you to say he had terrible defense shows how dumb you are. The reason he lost to Hearns was not because his defense rather cause Hearns had way more reach, power, and speed than him. He was never at his best fighting in the higher weights and was usually older than all his opponents aka not in his prime and still managed to go to from 135-160 and become champion. He also won that first fight with Leonard. It was close but he won more rounds and rocked Leonard like 3 times through out the fight. In the lightweight division he was consummate but he was still great in the higher divisions.
@@PAIN-sj9re The reason he lost to Hearns wasn't because of his defense? And you call me dumb. Wow. I just said he was overrated, not a bad fighter. If a win over Iran Barkley is one of your biggest wins, you weren't that great.
@@romanmoroni2785 Cmon man you think mayweather or whitaker would have survived Hearns. Benitez survived but that's because Benitez was way more athletic and stayed on defense the whole time. Roberto Duran was smaller than Benitez and not prepared for that fight. His defense was good man it wasn't terrible and anyways hes not overrated. His win over Barkley was good considering he was fighting at middleweight at 37 when he started his career at 16 at lightweight. Plus he went the distance with Marvin Hagler and fought well.
@@PAIN-sj9re I'm not a big fan of Mayweather, but he's arguably the best 135-154 fighter ever. Yes, he would have beaten Hearns. Way too fast at any weight for the hit man. Floyd has beaten every big name in boxing within his weight range. Names like Canelo, De La Hoya, Moseley, Cotto, Marquez, Hatton, Baldomir, Berto, Pacquiao, Judah, Maidana(twice), Castillo(twice). No comparison between Hearns and Floyd.
It must be so demoralising to fight an opponent who you can't hurt, can dodge so many of your punches, and to top it all of, hits like a semi. That's pretty much what all of Duran's opponents at lightweight felt.
7:52 You can see how Duran is about to throw a combination but stops because of Kobayashi almost slipping. Great sportmanship.
That first 30 seconds, Roberto reminded me of a really pissed off bobcat. Just a wonderful fighter. And when he was a kid, he was as fun to watch as when he was a champion. Even more so.
Duran was unbelievable. only 20 yrs old and KO'd a great fighter. And would be champion in a little more than 6 months when he overwhelmed Ken Buchanan, the lightweight champ
Undoubtedly Duran is the best lightweight that has existed, you really see the power of his blows and the damage he did to his opponents ... DURAN clean lightweight category.
man what i love about duran is that even with that pure boxing ability, feigns, textbook punching technique, speed, power, defensive proweless he had an animilistic quality i think here he realizes kobayashi could not hurt him and he eats his punches not because he has too but because he just wanted to but because he wants to destroy him
just look at that sequence at 8:00 minutes jabs about 3 times slips a right and counters hi boxing IQ was so high there is a reason ray arcel and freddie brown rank him so high
yes sheridan is over the top lol. i appreciate the angles duran use and his relentless pressure. i like the way he throws the right hand lead and follows with the sharp left uppercut.

Irritating Bob Sheridan and ESPN should be ashamed of themselves for this disrespectful play-by-play that was obviously recorded long after the actual fight occurred. First off, this bout did NOT take place at an outdoor venue, as described by the overrated Sheridan...it was held at the fairly new (at the time) Gimnasio Nuevo Panama which today bears Duran’s name. The original broadcaster was the late Panamanian legend, Tomas Alberto Cupas.
He will feint looking for openings great defense. He will adapt. Want to see his master piece performance when he was 18 at 126 lbs?watch his fight against Ernesto Marcel. Marcel will become the 126 world champion.
Let’s all be honest, the only reason any of us know who Duran is is because of the Leonard fight. But because of that, we’ve been able to see how good he truly was. I would argue he’s the greatest lightweight of all time
Yes, he did. But for that fight, Duran was very out of shape: it was a miracle that he reached the weight. Pity that there was no other fight, in which Durán arrived in good physical condition.
Born and raised in Panama. I Used to go to the Marañon gym to see Duran and other great Panamanian Pro boxers training. Remember Duran shadow boxing training for De Jesús II, Benítez, Etc I am still remember the noise from the sand bag after his right hands. At that time there was a lot of talks about he fighting Pipino Cuevas. He said: people think I am going to eat all his punches and that I have to arms. He will run every morning and found in criticism a huge motivator. His mental capacity was great. Fun memories for one or the top 5 boxers in history. Certainly the best Latam fighter ever. Born to fight
Pedro González Cerrud, I boxed at the old Maranon Gym in the late 70s and was trained by Chaflan. In 1977, as an amateur, I sparred against a young pro...Hilario Zapata. Great memories, paisa!
Who is this Commentator? Obviously been put on over the original. Can't stand this guy, predicting that Duran is going to be a big thing when it's clearly re mastered. The original commentary on these fights are great.
Kobayashi gave a good fight here but Duran one of my all time favorites was too much. The first fight i ever saw of Duran was against Ken Buchanan. It was great seeing championship fights of all weight classes on regular tv for free before the days of PPV.
I have nothing against Duran but I think (no, it was) Duran's achievements was a bit exaggerated by the boxing Historians, experts and fans. He was considered by many as the greatest lightweight boxers of all time but Benny Leonard, Joe Gans and even Carlos Ortiz has better lightweight resume than him. He did move up in weight but he's not as successful as boxing people wanted to portray. 43-15 since moving up and that's not impressive. Almost all ATG's who move up in weight are far successful than him like Robinson, Chávez, Whitaker, Sam Langford, Pacquiao and Mayweather. These guys equalled if not surpassed their achievements in their natural weight but Duran failed to do that. He even lost most of his signature fights like the Leonard rematch, Hearns, Benitez and Hagler. Still I believe that he is an all time greats. I even have him in my top 15 all time greats rankings. I just believe that fans and experts should stop over glorifying his achievements.
@@royboatnerjr9974 I can back up my words. Can you? Seriously, this is not to downplay Duran's achievements, no. It was to tell the truth. Every thing I said is facts. Gans and Leonard has far better resume than Duran. Hell, even Duran's trainer Ray Arcel acknowledged that Leonard is greater than Duran. And unlike most ATG's, Duran is not that successful moving up in weight as he was in his original weight class. Ye, he was won titles from welterweight to middleweight but he lost it too as fast if not faster than he won it. By no means I am not saying that Duran is not a great boxer. He was in my own personal all time greats pounds for pound list of 15. Not exactly 15 but inside 15.
@@stopurcrying1671 we can agree or disagree with everything when it comes to boxing. But as far as I know, all I said are facts. Roberto Duran was an all time greats and inside the top 15. But his achievements are a bit exaggerated by the fans and purists.
Bob Sheridan overdub...why this guy was such a hot boxing commodity as an announcer is beyond me. There was nobody else around? I guess Don Dunfey was at the end of the line as a broadcaster but Sheridan is like a guy off the street. Last I heard, he had about a dozen heart attacks and was managing a bank branch somewhere. Now that's a more believable story.
The reason LEONARD beat HEARNS was he was willing to reach down and fight like a girl with the power of a man. Most will not understand or agree but HEARNS was outclassing SUGAR. His girllike flurry was desperation and it won it for him
so Duran 20 years of age in this fight No Doubt when Julio César Chávez was 20 had more qualities, yet better boxer right on point and more precise than anyone else in boxing history more then Muhammad Ali Julio Cesar Chavez Roberto Duran everyone finito Lopez lightweight
Those fights with ray, Tommy, & Marvin were past his prime. Duran turned pro March 8, 1967. Marvin started professional career in 1973 @ middle wieght, Duran started at battam 118. Ray and Tommy had their first professional fight in 1977, so Duran was fighting a whole decade prior to them both. All that weight that Duran put on was age weight. Out of the 4 Kings Duran is the only one greatest lightweight of all times and the top 10 greatest fighters of all times. Ring magazine has been around since 1922, that's what they rank duran. And top 5 lb for lb greatest fighter of all times. Google it to verify.
Kobayashi, very strong boxer; "Hard to kill".. Durán.. Bestial Power, intelligence & always go ahead.. The referee, panamanian Isaac Herrera, the best in all tiemes called "The Panamanian Nureyev" 'cause his dancing work..
The announcer was not at the fight this was something made later and this guy put his own punch by punch description what a phony I could do it myself that's what I think and he threw the phony crowd canned cheers in one year later on his 21st birthday Roberto Duran came to Madison Square Garden in New York and the next day he beat Kenny Buchanan to become the lightweight champion of the world the ny daly had a picture of him standing in front of Madison Square Garden talkin about his birthday that day actually he fought at the Garden a year earlier September 13th 1971 I remember I was there I didn't really know who he was he was on the undercard as a Panamanian knockout artist he beat his opponent in the first round Ken Buchanan beat ismeal Laguna who he had taken the title from that night what's the rematch it was the day they retook Attica prison in Upstate New York and shot people in the back Governor Rockefeller took the Heat he screwed up just a little something I remember from that day
