We find ourselves in England, during the late 12th century. The country is in disarray as King Richard the Lionheart is off fighting in the Crusades, leaving his throne exposed to the devious machinations of Prince John. The younger sibling covets his brother’s power and plans to steal the English crown for himself. He is aided by the dastardly Sheriff of Nottingham, who uses unaffordable taxes in order to oppress the peasantry and fill his master’s coffers.
Is there nobody who will stand up to such tyrants? Nobody who will pick up the bow and the sword and fight for the innocent people of England? Well, in fact, there is one such man. A brave outlaw who will lead a gang of rogues and outcasts against the reign of terror. A charitable bandit who will steal from the rich and give to the poor. A man known as Robin Hood!

I view the movie list as such: 1) Robin Hood Prince of Thieves; he was definitely the most heroic in a real world setting. 2) Robin Hood Men in Tights; because unlike other Robin Hood’s he spoke with an English accent but still not as heroic. 3) Robin Hood (2010); it was an interesting take on the story with some other historical elements thrown in but it did take its time to get going and left a few questions, like is this supposed to get a sequel? 4)Robin Hood (1973); the animated Disney movie did have an all star cast for the time and for most kids it was our introduction to the character. 5) The Story of Robin Hood and His Merry Men; (1952) English made movie that I came across on Disney+ and was far better than the Earl Flynn movie.

Congratulations on making it, Karl! I love the April Fool’s prank - reminds me of the King Arthur one from years ago, back when Simon was hosting. I didn’t watch that one when it first came out, so, without checking the release date, I wasn’t sure whether it was just speculative or based on some shred of historicity I hadn’t heard about before, but the date on today’s video gave it away for me pretty quickly. 😂

@@nickysturzu1290 The Santa Claus video isn't an April Fool's video, though, as it's actually about a real person - the Saint Nicholas from the fourth century AD that we have contemporary records of (he attended the Council of Nicaea, for instance). King Arthur and Robin Hood, on the other hands, are widely agreed to be fictional persons with no direct historical source.

If you haven't seen Robin of Sherwood, It's a really good show, It has a perfect soundtrack filled with Celtic music that blends in with the environment, Probably the best version of Robin

In fairness, Robin hood probably was either based on a real person or an amalgamation of real people. It was common for outlaws to take refuge from the law in the woods and most men at that time were trained in archery. Maid marion was likely a porky

Because this video involves Robin Hood and Men in Tights is one of my favorite movies. Scarlet/Skathelock was a name imposed by courts as a punishment for theft; "Scathe-Lock", as in he scathes or disdains locks. The records still exist of the name being handed out in court. Guy De Gisborne is definitely an historical figure, he's mentioned in Magna Carta among a particular few deserving specific punishment.

Robin Hood is one of my favorite fictional character's. And I'm happy to have you folks tell his story today, as I needed a little mood pick up. I know it's for April Fools, but I still enjoyed it. The first April Fool's video I recall from this channel, was when Simon talked about Sherlock Holmes. That also made my day when I found it. Thank you Karl and thank you Biographics team!

In my freshman year of high school around 1978 (USA), I had a teacher from Germany who taught one of my favorite classes of my schooling career, "Our European Heritage". He maintained that Robin Hood was a mostly mythological character, based on an amalgam of the more than one person and on the attitudes of the peasantry of the day.

You did get me, that was like a combination of Prince of Thieves and 1952 film that has a long as title. But still have to admit Robin Hood is popular because of his character appeals to so many. I was told by a teacher that the Queen regions (mother of Richard and John) hired thieves to rob rich carriages in order to secure funds to buy Richard’s ransom from either Spain or France, one of the two held him hostage after the failed crusade, most likely France. Either way good job keeping a straight face because I was buying the fool’s gold thinking it was the genuine article.

You should do a video on Fulke Fitzwarin, arguably the person Robin Hood was based on. Was gentry until King John denied his inheritance and then proceeded to be an outlaw robbing primarily King John until John finally caved in desperate need to have people fight on his side during the uprising that lead to Magna Carta.

An odd version but my favourite version of Robin Hood is Sean Connery's movie. It's made when Robin was an elderly gentleman and had become a monk.

At least this was a good summation of the story I was told as a child in the Fifties. A bit later it was "Davy, Davy Crockett, king of the wild frontier". He was a civil disobedient as well but ended up in Government.

As far as I am concerned, Errol Flynn IS Robin Hood, or Robin Of Loxley, Claude Rains is Prince John, Basil Rathbone is Guy Of Gisbourne, Melville Cooper is the Evil Sheriff Of Nottingham, Alan Hale Sr. is Little John and Olivia De Havilland is Maid Marian. But then, "The Adventures of Robin Hood" is, by far, the best movie about the myth. Happy April Fools Day y'all.

Robin and King Arthur. Two mythical British figures we wish were real but are more likely than not just made up characters people thought were real. Sometimes for their entire lives.
