I love how they have both versions of Robin Hood in the series, the peasant version and the nobleman -- both add something to the myth, and now they have a way to explain it.

They do it a little tiny bit in that Russell Crowe film (which, sure, more closely resembles Martin Guerre/Sommersby) - it's a small detail, but a nice one.

When they first wrote Michael Praed out so he could go and be a Prince on Dynasty I was very annoyed and didn't immediately warm to Jason Connery. But the noble Robin grew on me. This series has some excellent recurring villains, great character pieces for the Merry Men and continuing wonderful photography and fight scenes.

Yeah, Jason's acting is criticised but he's much better in the fight scenes.

Jason Connery faced a similar conundrum to Peter Davison. How do you follow Tom Baker? I enjoyed his performances as Robin as much as Michael Praed, and I'd happily follow either one of them in to the gates of hell itself.

Morning Alexa (8.30am here in the UK). The character of Gulnar in this is played by Richard O'Brien, writer/creator of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Oliver Cotton, who plays Owen, was indeed in Sharpe. He played the villainous General Loup in Sharpe’s Battle

I've sometimes wondered if they chose him for Sharpe based on his RoS appearance (not going to say why I think that, obviously). But when you think about it, Sharpe sometimes resembles Robin Hood, a marksman in green with a huge sidekick and a little band of men. The late episode 'Sharpe's Justice' in particular even seems to have a Sherriff/Gisbourne villainous duo in it...

My favourite recurring villain gets introduced! Gulnar was played by iconic NZ/British person Richard O'Brien, who wrote the original Rocky Horror Show, cowrote the Rocky Horror Picture Show (and starred in the movie as Riff Raff) and credits his NZ upbringing for overwriting his English deference to authority. (Admittedly, going back 7 decades.) Sean Connery jr is completely believable as the new Robin, and it was a good idea to combine the most popular legends.

I'm glad no one dropped spoilers for the season-opener. I love season three as much, if not more, than one and two. It was great to see Abbot Hugo back at his devious best and the treachery of the sheriff unabashed as ever, with Gisburne getting stick from the both of them. May Herne protect us!

What they did was told me original Robin would die and what actor was the replacement, then went on to talk about some S3 plot but I had deleted the comments before accidentally reading that. It happened maybe about 15 times.

@@alexachipman There's no excuse other than small-mindedness to ruin someone's enjoyment of a series, especially when you work so hard on your reaction videos. I'm glad you're enjoying the series so much. It's beautifully written and performed with excellent guest stars adding to the production. It still packs an emotional punch after all these decades. Your candle dance was terrific. I was lucky enough to do live role-playing adventures in wonderful locations including Peckforton Castle. A whole weekend of sheer escapism, adventure, elation, exhaustion and adrenaline. The only thing that would have improved the atmosphere in the tavern after a pitched battle would have been your presence. But this was the summer of 1984 and so we made do with copious amounts of ale and recounted stories of valour, lucky escapes, fear and excitement, roars of laughter and then a surprise attack by the monster team and all hell would break loose. Happy days indeed!

Gisburn is so fantastic! I love when he says "I never forget a horse" so meaningfully. Of course he's a horse nerd. i'm so glad you like him. It's a pity the Guy Groupies seem to have wound up, you could have joined. His super-fans still love him though, I believe they planted a memorial tree at his local church quite recently. Lovely dancing from you at the end. Nice one! Thanks for another great reaction.

Great review. I knew you'd love the candle dance and I've been looking forward to you seeing it. It's been re-enacted beautifully at many conventions. As mentioned, the Robin Hood legend has two origins. One as peasant, one as nobleman. With the departure of Michael Praed, Kip Carpenter had the opportunity to utilise and explore the nobleman origin and that makes for an interesting season 3/4. Looking forward to your journey through this season x

I love that you love this series. This season being twice as long as the previous two , was filmed partly in the winter which gives it very different look from the other two. The actress who played Marion, Judi Trott, had trained as a ballet dancer and is IMO the best Marion ever. I can't remember if I have already said this but the cast of this show are still friends and still meet up to this day. Their friendship comes through on screen IMO. Catch you next week for part 2.😁🏹

About ten years after he left the show Michael Praed was interviewed (its somewhere on RU-vid) and spoke about how he and Nicholas Grace were trying to get the show back together (apparently all the original cast were willing to return) but sadly it never happened. Would have been interesting to see how they got Praed to retake the role from Jason Connery!

Hello and Good Morning Alexa from England UK. Im very glad you enjoyed the opening story to Series 3. Series Creator Producer Writer Richard Carpenter decided to incorporate the Second Robin Hood Legend in to the series as a way of replacing the departed Michael Praed. Whereas Robin of ;Loxley was a surf from a poor family a Man of the people in contrast Robert Of Huntingdon is a complete opposite born in to a rich wealthy and powerful family and set to inherit vast wealth and lands but gives it all up to help the poor and oppressed. Jason Connery is the Son of the late Sean Connery the first and in my view the best ever James Bond which may have helped him get the lead role? However he was the first and only choice for the new Robin. You may have also noticed that "Clannad" have slightly tweaked the original opening and closing theme "The Hooded Man" which i prefer. You may also notice that they have also recorded some more new incidental music cues for the third season some of which you will notice in this opening two parter "Hernes Son". The first example being when Robert rides to meet the Sheriff, Abbot Hugo and Gisborne on the road to Huntingdon. These brand new incidental tracks are all superb and incorporated along the existing music done for Series 1 & 2 ENJOY!

Hi Alexa! The idea of rebooting a franchise and changing the origins of the main characters isn't a new idea. They were doing it with Robin Hood way back then. Michael Praed's version was Robin of Locksley, an outlawed peasant yeoman whereas Jason Connery's version is Robert of Huntingdon a disgraced nobleman. Also Richard O'brien as Gulnar!

Nice candle dancing at the end, there! Quite a sombre opening to the new series, but that is understandable given the tragic way the previous one ended, and the viewer gets a real sense of evil being in the ascendant and Robert of Huntingdon finally answering his calling in the nick of time. It was an ingenious move on the part of Richard Carpenter to make his new Robin a nobleman, as it both honours the versions of the legend which gave Robin that origin story, and also helps to ensure a different dynamic to what had gone before. Members of the production team did later admit that Jason Connery was cast as Robert primarily because he was blond, which made him contrast sharply with his predecessor, and also because of the Connery name, which ensured there would be plenty of publicity for series 3. He was quite inexperienced at the time, his only significant previous TV role having been the Doctor Who story Vengeance on Varos, but he does try hard and is a likeable presence, even if he lacks Michael Praed’s charisma. I like the fact that the new opening titles deliberately echo the original ones, though the rearrangement of the theme music feels overly fussy.

Recommending the film “The Fisher King” (1991) This one will be right up your alley!!

I think I probably watched more of this series than I had of the previous ones. There was a certain degree of novelty and jeopardy when it came to the casting of Jason Connery. It could have failed spectacularly. It certainly piqued my interest in the series when I hadn't found Michael Praed's pretty and slightly fey portrayal of Robin entirely compelling.

Robin has regenerated. I was too afraid to type that in the previous video for fear of ..spoilers! There's more I want to type but I dare not! I like those two girls almost in awe of Marian like she's a famous actress or Rock star. Love your ending!😊
