Minnie Driver should have won an Oscar for her scene where he tells her he doesn't love her. That was the most accurate portrayal I've ever seen of someone's heart being shattered into a million pieces.

I guess I saw it differently. I think Minnie Driver is the weakest link in this flic. To me her performance is high school level, either overplayed or underplayed when not totally stilted. Sorry guys and gals, she damn near ruined the movie for me.
@joeldykman7591
@joeldykman7591 2 года назад
So, the reason why Robin repeats "its not your fault" is because he wants Will to acknowledge its not his fault from an emotional perspective, Will is smart enough to know the abuse wasn't his fault rationally, but emotionally he internalized the abuse as something that was at least somehow his fault.

This movie was written by Afflek & Damon! They won an academy award for the writing and brought their moms to the Oscars with them. The film & cast won awards at just about every ceremony that year.

"That might be the best acting I've seen." Yeah, that's how I've always felt about this movie. Its funny how you reacted to the fact that Matt and Ben wrote the movie. I once watched some video about how they went to the award ceremony for this movie and they were young guns of hollywood and felt completely out of place and unsure of themselves surrounded by "elite" company.

10:54 My favorite scene of the entire film. Robin Williams and Matt Damon were both absolutely brilliant. Sean gave Will some hard truths and Will knew it. The way Matt Damon finally stopped all his cocky, smart mouth talk and just listened was really profound. You can tell what Sean was saying really resonated with him by the way he was looking down in silence with the occasional subtle eye movements. Outstanding scene.
@boomer4629
@boomer4629 2 года назад
I love that you commented on the spat between Sean and Lambeau that Will overheard, saying it might be a good thing. I think it was exactly what he needed: proof that two people cared enough about him to argue passionately about what was best _for him_ . And he knows it can't be a manipulation tactic because they don't know he is listening. Beautiful writing to have that be the precursor to him breaking down and crying in the "it's not your fault" scene, because he finally trusts Sean enough to be open with him.

18:11 That whole fight with Skylar is a clear sign that Will has been let down repeatedly by people he thought he could trust... every time, he hesitates but then he figures "THIS time, it will go well" and he gets taken advantage of and let down yet again which stings 20 times worse than when he was alone, so he went through life not letting anyone in. With a charming witty facade, dismissing it all. Skylar got him riled up cause her care felt real, which brought up the traumatic anxiety he felt back when he trusted and got betrayed, so he panicked and lashed out and figured _"I won't be able to handle if she betrayed my trust so it's best if I just not let her in like everybody else. It's been proven to work"_

Robin Williams entirely improvised the wife-fart bit in the idiosyncrasy speech . You can even hear a third person laughing (someone on the filming crew). You should watch his 90-minute stand-up comedy show from 2002, Robin Williams: Live On Broadway. I continuously return to it every now and again and always laugh my damn a** off.

The camera is wobbling the whole time because the crew couldn't keep it together. Allegedly that's why the angles are different when they're in that room, they had to move in closer in editing and blur areas because everything else was moving so much. It just adds to the genuine feel of the moment for me and makes it more special in hindsight.

Well cast, well directed, well conceived. It was authentic. Hurts because it's true. Even those who weren't abused, I think you can see the truth of it. Those of us who were, well, it's nice to know we are not alone. Ain't that why we watch these things. Extended family is just as important. Blood isn't important when your life is on the line.

The dialog they gave Robin Williams won him the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, the only Oscar he ever won (thought he was nominated three other times.) Damon and Driver were both nominated for Oscars as well.

And if you want to see the brilliant Robin Williams in more things, you should watch Dead Poets Society and to see his comedic chops on full display, watch Mrs Doubtfire and Aladdin where he plays the genie - he riffed the entire thing and they animated around what he did.

Trivia - Matt and Ben wrote a treatment and it got the green light. They kept writing a great script BUT they wanted to see how far they could push the studio. As they continued to write, they would put in more sexual innuendos and got crazier and crazier. The studio kept saying yes to everything. Matt & Ben were beginning to think that no one was really reading it. So, they put in the script that one of them gives the other oral sex. The studio said yes to everything but said they might be going a little too far with that scene. So, yes! They were reading it. And they won Oscars for Best Original Screenplay.

Two small lines that say the most about what will values, are passed over by most people. In the scene where Robin asks will about people that are in wills life that challenge nad inspire him. Will says he has Chucky, Afflecks character. Robin says chuck is family, he would lay down in traffic if will asked him to. The second is when Robin and the professor are arguing about wills future. The professor says will should have more than hanging around with mindless gorilla's, Robin tells him that if will asked anyone of them would take a bat to the professors head. Loyalty is most important to will. He wants to keep a small circle with no new friends.

That first therapist was George Plimpton, who was a writer known for his patrician accent and bloodlines. He was known for participating in events and then writing about them. Probably most famously, he tried out for the Detroit Lions football team and wrote about the experience in the book "Paper Lion", which was made into a movie. He also pitched half an inning of baseball against Major League players and wrote about that in "Out of My League". In 1985 he wrote an article for Sports Illustrated magazine about a young up and coming pitcher named Sidd Finch, who was known for his ideosyncracies. It was only later that it was revealed that it was all an April Fool's stunt,
