Correction: At 43:02 when discussing a drop in Morale, I should have said "if morale is already at the lowest point on the track (which is -3) it does not sink further, and characters do not suffer wounds because of this."
When I first bought this I thought I was screwed, trying to learn it. Once I used the Dized app in tandem with Rodney, everything snapped into place. Now it's all second nature!
Phew! Got this game last week. Played it once and then watched your video to make sure we did everything right. I think we may have done everything right though because we starved to death.
Years later I still have to regularly return to this watch it played. It’s not your fault Rodney, your a great teacher, it’s that I only have space for a few games in my head and RC takes up a lot of space to remember. Relearning this has cause me now to completely forget how to play chess. 🤷🏻♂️
This video was incredibly helpful! This video and the Scythe tutorial convinced me to buy both games, and helped me learn the rules. You guys really set the gold standard for board game tutorial videos. Thanks Rodney!
I dont mean to be so off topic but does any of you know of a method to log back into an instagram account?? I stupidly lost the login password. I would love any assistance you can offer me
I don't have 2nd Edition, but this is the best board game ever printed. With just scenario one it's an amazing game, but then there's so many scenarios and expansions. If I were stranded on a deserted remote island and had one game to choose...
I've very recently discovered this channel and, I must say, I love it. I play board games with my wife fairly often but reading rules isn't something I enjoy doing. You explain everything very clearly and seem like a genuinely nice person. Great stuff Rodney, keep it up! I look foward to buying this game soon ( and not having to go through pages of rules! ).
There are SO many tacky and ill-made board game tutorials out there on this platform, but I honestly have to say that considering this game has SO much going on, this is explained in the most amazing way! Got this for Christmas with NO idea what to do, took 6 hours to complete a round, but hey, we had a great time, and your tutorial was the reason we made it this far in the first place! Merry Christmas everyone!
Thank you, this was super kind of you to say. This game has a lot going on, so I'm glad the video was helpful and I'm sure your future games will go faster (especially if you lose early ;) ).
This is one of my favorite games that I've played about 20-30 times. I still learned a lot from your video, thank you! Thank goodness for the new rulebook (which I don't have yet) and you of course!
4 years later this video is still so helpful. i just got this game and as soon as i have seen that there is video tutorial marketed on the box i came here. Nice video and very clear and easy to understand
Just got this game and while I do plan to read the manual (I get a masochistic pleasure with super-long and detailed manuals), this video was extremely helpful and so well made! Thank you so much! Although I've played my fair of complex games, I think this one takes the cake! But after seeing this video I'm amazed by the deepness & elegance of the rules and by how well-designed the board & cards are to guide you through the experience! I get the sense this is a very immersive game that can invoke a great narrative if played with a group of imaginative individuals! Can't wait to play it!
I just wanted to say thank you for making this awesome video. It is pretty detailed, but so well-structured that you can always follow easily. I admittedly had to watch various parts several times, because there's just so much information, but it's all wrapped up so nicely, I know feel like I can totally start playing the game. Thanks again, awesome job.
Just received my Collector's Edition from Game Found. The components are very nice. Im currently playing through the introductory scenarios (4 of them). I've watched and or listened to your great how to play several times over the last 3 years 😆 between the Introductory scenarios and Rodney's how to play, this was not too too tough to get into to. Winning/surviving is a whole other thing 😂
That was pretty brutal watching. So many little details I’m worried I’ll forget when playing. Can’t imagine how much work went into creating the video. Hopefully once I play a little most of the rules will become intuitive and I won’t have to hold so much info in my working memory. Thanks for all your work!
Had to come back and watch this tutorial. After a gap of 2 1/2 years of it hitting the table, I pulled it out and played through a game with my 6 and 9 year old. We got a few rules wrong (like playing until everyone was dead instead of just me), but this was good for young ages because of all the open information. Thanks for a great video to help me knock the rust of the ol’ Robinson hinges!
We always get excited when we see that you have a tutorial for a game we want to learn! Out of all the RU-vid tutorial channels, you are by far the best one! You always explain things so clearly, thank you for what you do!
Last week I played the Castaways scenario with 3 other friends. We were badly banged up, but not out. Our wood production was high, our roof was strong, and all we had to do was gather 3 more wood during the production phase, finish our final wood pile, and build our palisade up to 1 to guarantee survival through the final night before victory. There was one problem though. I was on my last hit point. We couldn't afford to take any damage during the event phase. We draw the event card... +1 to our palisade and draw another event card! We couldn't believe our luck. This card was actually helpful! But we weren't in the clear yet. We still had to draw our next card. We draw our second event card... -1 to our palisade and draw another event card! We were freaking out! Had we drawn this card first, I would have died. It just so happened the previous card protected us! What amazing luck! What a truly unbelievable way to beat the game! This would be one of the best gaming moments for our group! All we had to do was survive our next card. We draw the third event card... -1 health to everyone. I died. We played out the rest of the turn as if I didn't take any damage to make sure we would have won. We built our palisade up by 1, gathered our necessary food, and we found we were able to surviving anything the weather dice threw at us. We would have won. Would have, could have, didn't.
Congratulations to me for finishing the video, now I can't wait for the game to come in the mail. Thanks Rodney for always making such great content and being a true gentleman!
Congratulations to me for making it to the end of the video!! Great job as always Rodney! Thanks to you, I think I have a better understanding of how to play this beast of a game...
Can't wait to try it!! Set it up and watched entire video... I'm sure I'll be double checking a lot and need to look up solo mode. When I first got into games I saw this and totally ran away... now I crave complexity!!!! Amazing job as usual Rodney!!
This is still the best video in regards to explaining this game. I'm planning to drag a friend down with me and play -Death Simulator: The Game- Robinson Crusoe this weekend. You are far better and more efficient at explaining this than either me or the rulebook! :)
I made it to the end! Thanks as always for the clear rules and setup. I have received this game as a late Christmas gift and can't wait to play solo tonight to try it out!
Thankyou for the very thorough explanation of the game rules. On all of your rules videos, that I have watched so far, you have done an excellent presentation.
Congrats to me...twice. The best way to get a solid start for me was to watch this video in bursts because it's pretty dense. Scan the rulebook and make an attempt at playing a few rounds and looking up rules as needed. Then once you feel like you are close to not cheating, watch this video again to glean the little bits of minutia that you were still missing. Great video! Thanks.
Thank you Rodney... Seriously, you're like an board-games explanator machine! Side note: I was sad 'cause I wanted a first edition copy (I prefer its box art) but seeing the updated components I've changed my mind :-D
We are getting ready to start streaming this on our Sunday night Incorrigible Twitch. This was a great refresher before we jump in and make fools of ourselves yet again! Thanks Rodney!
I watched the video and I read all reactions (595!),which gave me a great understanding of the game. I am considering of buying the collectors edition. There still are a few questions remaining : 1) Did I understand it correctly that the more players, the better the game will play and more change to succeed? 2) I better send this video to my co-players before we are going to play, because it saves lots of explaining time 3) If you have 2 players on some card and you roll failure, did you succeed anyway, because you said 2 is guaranteed succes? 4) Does it end if a player dies or can you still try to get successful? Lots of storybuilding in this game. I am no fan of cooperative games, but I love this one. Now only finding players... Oh and great clear video and thanks for the time stamps.
Hey Jouke, let's see if I can help a little: 1) This is going to be based on individual opinions, so hard to say what will be true for you. 2) Glad it was helpful! 3) If you have two pawns, you skip rolling the dice, as the action automatically succeeds. 4) You lose immediately if a character dies. Hope that helps!
thanks for the clear and straightforward demonstration of the rules! i'll need to watch it a couple of more time to get om the top of it, but i guess that's just due to the complexity of the game
Hello Rodney, Like your other tutorials this is an excellent source for learning. I think you are the best tutor for teaching board games. Now, I have to find a way to buy this game from abroad since we have very limited options in Turkey. Thank you for your valuable and informative videos.
congratulations, me. lol. my friends and I had a guys night earlier and we were going to play this, but unfortunately it was quite overwhelming since none of us knew anything about the game, and the rule book was quite in depth. We decided to play a different game and try to learn what we can for next time so we won't have a several hour transition where we all try to figure out what to do. This video should help tremendously, thank you.
Once again, very useful as you've made me realize where I was going wrong. I was paying both wood and fur costs for my camp structures. No wonder I wasn't getting anywhere! Hopefully, I can beat this scenario at last!
avoiding bad luck more like! But a winning strategy for the Castaway scenarios that i have found, regardless of # of players is: 1) get your morale tracks as high as possible early on, sacrificing actions for food foraging of you have to (i.e. starve) -- determination tokens and keeping your morale up is essential for later rounds. 2) build the hatchet as soon as you can (we play that it can move with the camp, which make sense, hope that's correct). Wood is essential for building, surviving snow flakes, and building the camp fire. 3) build the characters specific items as soon as you can... for the extra benefits (shortcut, fireplace, snare, spear) and for the determination tokens. 4) early on, explore as fast as possible to get to a central island location, then build your shelter and camp down. If you're lucky you can find a natural shelter (or sacrifice a more off center location for a shelter), then you can focus on the roof, then lastly palisade. You would almost always want to up your palisade with building inventions (fire, brick, moat, etc) before using wood/fur to build. Personally, I feel you are set once the roof level is at 3. It's very unlikely you'll get 4 rain/snow clouds and when you do hopefully you can mitigate it or handle the extra food and wood.
5) and if you happen to have built the rope (which is needed for the snare, a great item to build), go for the 2nd scenario item (mast rigging?) to get that 3 woods for the signal fire.
I've had to watch this video twice! It's a great resource. I still am referencing the rulebook throughout each game though bc there's so much to remember O_o
fantastic tutorial, well done. been playing the game for some time now, but struggle to explain it to others without being the alphaplayer. you showed me a way to set things up easier to follow for outsiders :D
yeah this game is savage. most of my success has come from finding one of the shelter tiles early and going all-in on the wood pile... essentially racing my wound track.
Last night we played Castaways - made it all the way to the end, collected enough wood (5) for the final stack with one round to go before the ship appeared. Got excited because we were so close and transferred it all across to the stack - next round we gained a snow token AND rolled 2 snow and 2 rain and 1 palisade damage. With nothing to discard we took damage and died - sooooooooooo close. This game is really amazing in that even though you lose, you'll talk about what happened and went wrong for days to follow.
I totally agree. To me personally: Dying miserably in a board game has never before been as memorable and exciting as in Robinson Crusoe. Also: Thanks for this video! When I explain the game to new players it always takes me about 60 to 70 minutes to setup the board, card decks and tokens AND explain all the rules. Maybe, if I happen to find a new interested player for a session of Robinson Crusoe, I'll try recommending this video to them. If it works we might be able to start playing an hour earlier. :D
So I managed to make it to the end of the video. (hooray!) Although there is a LOT of rules, you managed to explain the vast majority of them in a clear way. Now, I will hopefully win at least ONE game in my lifetime. Thank you very much for the video.
eesh - there's a lot to digest here. This is definitely one of those games I'd need to actually sit down and play to get the hang of. But, I definitely think it looks interesting and will see if I can try it at some point.
WE are now playing it through on the channel, and I think you might find that helps bring everything together. You can check it out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qIDzj-V9h9s.html
Every single board game i have i learn it from you! You are the Rulebook Master! Thanks for your help! Gonna have it in a couple of days so i will watch the video for 2nd time..
@@TheMartinChronicles we are having fun. 10 games played 2 wins. After maybe 5th game we understood game really well. We stopped reading every turn to make sure we were doing right steps (yet each scenario has a new learning step, make sure you do it correctly, like fog in scenario 2 we did wrong, made game harder). Ok with those two things. Great game!
Whew! A marathon session. Great video (as usual), but a lot of info to take in. I am looking forward to sitting down with the game and working through these rules myself.
U have watched the play through videos as well. You and Pat work well together. The videos helped shed light on some of the questions. Now I just have to sit there and work through it myself.
I finally got a chance to watch this video. I can see why people were comparing First Martian’s to this game. I am going to have to show this to my wife, to see what she thinks to see if it makes the list. We did not care for First Martians, but that was because it was way more administratively heavy than this looks. We also don’t usually go for games that have “scenarios” that mean that we may have to buy expansions to increase playability to keep it interesting. Thanks for a GREAT video. I miss the box flip and hit plaid shirt. Your “kerd” was in rare form on this one!! Best wishes to you Rodney!
What an excellent video!!! Exactly what i was looking for, thank you :) Edit: and i just saw the elaborate time stamps in the description.. hat of to you sir!!
at 43:05 ish you say if the morale track is already at 0 you dont have to take a penalty but i think it should be 'if the morale track is already at -3'
Finished watching! Congratulation for me 😁. I just got the base game and Treasure Chest expansion, since I mastered the rule because of both the rulebook and this video, the game run very smooth. Love from Indonesia 🇮🇩
this video does introduce me and makes me bought the game thanks rodney for your tutorial, this video cetainly helps me a lot to learn this game without read the whole rule book (for me i feel reading this rulebook will more exhausted than reading rules of mage knight, lol)
Excellent tutorial for a tough game to digest. Every time you smile at the camera after some explanation, I just think to myself that all you're missing is a little wink. Great series
Yes I made it to the end of the video. I really want to try this game and I have been waiting for the release of this second edition to get it. I can't wait till play it.
