This film has two sequels Robocop 2 (1990) Robocop 3 (1993) and one remake Robocop (2014) but in my.opinion my favorite is the first film
@carn9507

I first watched it when I was a kid and have seen so many times it's probably my most viewed movie in my whole life. I love it. Regarding sequels. I really like RoboCop 2. It's got a bit of a nastier edge but still funny too (mainly when Robo gets stuck with far too many directives he becomes overly politically correct). RoboCop 3 is... pretty bad. It's very watered down for a more child-friendly audience (which the TV series went even moreso) but I still like a couple of things about it. But unlike the first two, it doesn't have Peter Weller, and while Robert Burke does an admirable job, Weller IS Robo/Murphy and no other actor has managed to make that role work anywhere near as well. The 2014 reboot.... 'RebootCop' is... bland. Most of the stuff even close to being memorable in it are just call backs to this one. It's fine, if it was it's own thing it would be more tolerable but it lacks the bite and the heart of the original. And yeah, the Dick Jones plummeting puppet is really the only bad thing I have to say about the whole film. Those damn overly long monkey arms... And yeah, Alan Rickman's Hans Gruber has the best window falling scene in any movie. Obviously it's really him, rather than a puppet but also, I dunno if anyone's mentioned it before, but Alan's expression of shock and fear is genuine as the stunt co-ordinators deliberately had him fall earlier than he thought they would (they told him count of 3 but they dropped him on 1). Anyways RoboCop. Absolute classic of sci fi action with more depth and emotion than many people would assume before watching it. :) Your reaction was fun. :D

Robocop 2 unfortunately suffered from studio interference but is still worth seeing. It was directed by Irvin Kirshner (Empire Strikes Back) written by Frank Miller (300, Sin City, Daredevil) and features master animator Phil Tippet's last use of stop-motion VFX before switching to CGI for JPark. After that, they're pretty useless.

I saw Robocop around 1990. Saw the first one on VHS and the second one in the cinema. This one sits firmly on my "movies to watch at least once a year" list, I love it to death. Most people dislike Robocop 2 but I like it fine. It falters a bit on the deep themes of the first one, but it is a ton of fun to watch anyway. Don't bother with Robocop 3 though, Peter Weller didn't bother coming back for that one and there's really good reason for it.

If you liked RoboCop you'll probably also enjoy Paul Verhoeven's other Sci-Fi masterpieces Total Recall and Starship Troopers, which also sneak in some interesting satire and social commentary through media interludes. But I like Robocop best because of the character arc of Murphy, who recovers his humanity in the last line of the film. Earlier in the film he refers to himself in the third person, like "Murphy had a wife and kids, what happened to them?" But right at the end, when he's asked "what's your name, son?" he replies "Murphy" and smiles. In a sense he is not RoboCop any longer, he's just Alex Murphy again. Such a satisfying conclusion. I also liked Nancy Allen as his partner. A lot of Hollywood movies would have made her a romantic interest for the male lead, but here she's just a cop, and a good one at that.
@AngelGroves

I literally gasped when I read your comment and said "whaat?!". I LOVE both Starship Troopers and Total Tecall ( I haven't seen the remake). I'm definitely a little ashamed I didn't know the director, considering how much I like them. I used to be so much better about that, and aim to be again! I appreciate you letting me know, though. That is so awesome. Also, WOW; I'm glad you pointed out that particular Murphy line at the end compared to when he was talking about Murphy/ his wife and son earlier. I already loved both lines/ moments so much, and hadn't thought about them fully in that way yet. Very cool. His arc really is terrific. Such a great movie. Thanks for the comment!

@LordBaktor

Starship Troopers is amazing and the fact that it is a "happy accident" blows my mind to this day. Verhoeven tried to do a satire of fascism and presented a libertarian utopia by mistake. - Level one: You think the movie is just dumb, fun but dumb. - Level two: You catch on to the fact that it is supposed to be satire and appreciate it more. - Level three: You realize the contradictions in the portrayal of fascism (press so free they are allowed to livestream from the front lines of an ongoing battle, military leaders that step down when they fuck up, etc.) and make "Service guarantees citizenship", "would you like to know more" and "until I die or you find someone better" your catchphrases.

This is prime Verhoeven, he excels in graphic scenes of all types in his movies. And don't worry about laughing, he also excels in adding a cheesiness to his films which is totally intended. As graphic as he may get, he doesn't want you to take it too seriously, a lot of the time. He personifies the excess of 80's & 90's cinema in many ways. Just found your channel, and I wish you the best. Those subs will go up quickly, I think!

A true master at the graphic and as you said, the cheesiness, but in the best of ways. LOVE. Thanks again, and I'll see you for the next reaction! :)

@@AngelGroves Thanks for the nice reply! If you want to see Verhoeven before he "went to 11", I'd recommend the films he made in his homeland, the Netherlands, before he went to Hollywood. He made a series of films with excellent Dutch actor Rutger Hauer (RIP) that are worth watching. Soldier of Orange (1977) is probably his best and most restrained, it deals with the Dutch resistance fighting the Nazis in WWII. Maybe more for personal viewing than a reaction video, I don't know what kind of views you'd get on RU-vid for a 70's Dutch film.

Some of my favorite actor reaction scenes is when they don't know what's coming. Robocop, exorcist, alien, just getting one of those scenes, the energy in the scene. Makes it feel more real, but as an audience makes it just that much more ridiculous in some ways. Because where I love to understand little thriller or horror reactions. Most people would say "oh I would've reacted differently!" And I'm like? "You ever see an alien before? Or an actual possessed person? Or a melting friend in your face? Cause everyone has a plan until it happens to them." But every reaction is a k of gold to me 😂

One reason this movie is incredible is its high level satire of corporatocracies. Its criticism of the military industrial complex, other forms of corporate welfare, gentrification, heartless and psychopathic business values, police suppression of the poor instead of addressing the causes of poverty, promoting technology that industry profits from at taxpayers' expense, infotainment, privatization, commercialism, consumerism, business propaganda, etc. It's not just an action movie with an amazing musical score, acting, special effects, set design, etc. With appreciation of its accurate satire, the movie deserves a 10 out of 10. Robocop is one of my top five favorite movies for several reasons.

As others have said, you have chosen wisely :) RoboCop is a low key masterpiece! No wasted scenes, most of the practical effects still holds up today, and is considered one of the best sci-fi action movies of all time. If you're looking for another movie that is similar and a total throwback to the RoboCop style of sci-fi action, then I highly recommend watching Dredd (2012) next. Funny enough, RoboCop was loosely based off of the Dredd comics from the 70's and 80's.

Two little fun facts: the shot of Dick Jones falling down with the terribly long arms is unintentional. They made the model to scale and filmed it, and everything seemed proportional, but when it translated to the big screen, the scene became stretched, thus explaining the weird arms. And this is the movie where Kurtwood Smith met his wife. She played Dick Jones' secretary, the one who Clarence "flirted" with, so I'm guessing his pick up line worked.

Imagine if the movie ended at the steel mill fight, because that's where they ran out of money originally. They took the movie to the studio and showed them what they had, and they got enough extra to shoot the real ending at OCP. The arms on the Dick Jones falling model look stretched because of an accidental lens effect, and there was just no time to fix or redo it. Also, Murphy signed a contract with the police, who are owned by OCP, and it's in his contract that they get to use his body for science if he falls in the line of duty. It's part of the nightmare corporate angle of the film, but nobody had to steal anybody, it was all done legally. Ed 209 was indeed stop motion, and by the master of the craft, Phil Tippet. It's rarely done this well, and they did have a life size model for many shots to blend with, and that's the key to making it look real.

Regarding RoboCop 2...it's ok. Due to its unexpected box office success, the studio wanted to rush the sequel asap, but Paul Verhoeven (director) already signed on to direct Total Recall and therefore couldn't commit. While still bloody and brutal, the tone of the movie is noticeably different without Verhoeven's involvement. It's worth a watch but doesn't hold a candle to the original.

Nice job! Michigander here…years back, Detroit was going to commission a sculpture to capture “the spirit of Detroit”. The mayor opened it up to a public comment and vote on what they thought a good statue for this would be. Overwhelmingly, Detroiters kept saying, “Robocop!”. The mayor eventually asked people to please stop asking for Robocop-which of course pushed it to the top of the list. On the final, public, televised speech about the statue, the mayor said there was a change and the city council would make the decision and then he angrily yelled-in response to the crowd shouting the obvious suggestion as he spoke, “We’re not building a damn Robocop statue in Detroit!”. Good reaction. The score from Basil Poledouris is also very good. With the duality of the Robocop theme ( very electronic rhythm) and the other part where he finds his humanity ( lot of string instruments). You should try to watch Conan The Barbarian from 1982. It’s the same composer and it’s one of the best score ever put to film. Also the movie, like Robocop, is more than meet the eyes. It work best if you are familiar with Nietzsche’s work.

RoboCop was not only a frantic and ultraviolent action/sci fi flick. Paul Verhoeven is a very intelligent director; his satire of an american society enjoying the technology while is drowned by crime and corruption is great, and the dark and sad story of that cop turning into a Frankenstein's monster-kinda robot while exploring his human soul, deep buried on a robotic skeleton... I like you have enjoyed this big 80s classic

It's on documentaries but for the gas station scene, they really did blow up a gas station. It was due for demolition and when the filming team found out they pushed hard to film the demolition. They filled the gas tanks, got the crew in, and did it all in one take because you can only blow up a gas station once. I forget if Weller was in suit for that take or a stuntman but it was all done in one go.

No one in Hollywood wanted to make this just based on the title. Theu sent the script to Dutch director Paul Verhoven who promptly threw it in the garbage. His wife fished it out of the trash, read it, and told him "you'll like this, the hero gets his head shot off in the first 15 minutes".. turns out, viscera was his thing. He also was very anti authority and anti fascist and the satire of American business appealed to him. He wanted to make Murphy "The American Jesus".. who looked like he came out of the Detriot auto assembly line (back when Detroit did that kinda thing).. and he wanted Boddicker to be his "Satan"

The area of Robo's face where you see his mouth.. according to the creators and FX guys.. that's not his real face. It's a metal skull with a rubber death mask made of Murphys face after death.. this was so he wouldn't go berserk if he ever remembered who he was and had no face.. part 2 also said it was made "to honor him"... but the only parts of Robo that are organic are what is left of his brain and some of his digestive system

I have to say, having watched a lot of reactions to Robocop, I felt more of an emotional connection with Murphy from your reaction than any other reaction I've ever seen. Thereby you've won yourself a subscriber. You seem to enjoy the overt violence of this film. Might I recommend Total Recall (1990) and Starship Troopers (1997) from the same director, which continues this (short-lived) trend in his films. The violence, in this film, was intended as a commentary, exaggerating the gore almost mockingly, since he felt that American films were generally too violent. I imagine he was quite surprised when American audiences said, 'Right on. More of that please.' He was happy to oblige. That's irony for you. I dearly wish he had made more films like Robocop and the two I earlier mentioned. Unfortunately Showgirls (1994) already tarnished his reputation before Starship Troopers (which had an enormous $105 million budget for its time) didn't exactly light up the box office. I have watched Showgirls but I barely remember it, and that's despite all the scantily dressed women in it. It had an extremely unlikable protagonist whom it was impossible to empathise with as she was basically a total bitch.

Aw, I appreciate your comment so much; you're so kind and I'm happy to have you a subscriber/ glad you're here at the beginning. Movies have meant a lot to me, since a really young age, because of the emotional connections I felt with them/characters in them, when done well, and those stayed with me through adulthood. I really love Murphy; such a great character and portrayed so well. It's the main reason I love to watch stuff, still; for that emotional connection. I know others, like you, can relate and I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yes; I really did like the violent parts...they were just done SO well with the practical effects. I should have known that this director did Starship Troopers (I actually mention Starship Troopers in my Child's Play 3 reaction haha), and Total Recall. I'm ashamed I didn't; I'm going to get better about knowing that info like I used to. I love both of those movies and can absolutely see the similarities, now. I haven't seen either in over 10 years, though, so I'll have to re-watch them soon. Showgirls is one I never saw (definitely didn't know he did it), and the only thing I knew about it was it had Elizabeth Berkley and it wasn't well received. I can understand why after reading your description of the character. That does suck; I wish he had more work out there. Thanks for the comment, and I appreciate any more suggestions!

"The Star Wars orbitting peace platform..." "What am I watching?" In 1984 Reagan had an idea to deploy satellites in orbit that could target incoming ICBM nuclear missiles from Russia with laser guns. It was called the "Strategic defense initiative" or SDI but the media called "The Star Wars Defense System" because he was serious about WWIII involving laser satellites. The idea of course was completely ridiculous, it would cost zillions and it wouldn't work, but for a hot minute, it was the biggest thing on everyone's mind - Reagan figured he could use it as a bargaining chip during peace talks, The Soviets thought it was an excuse to escalate and build and point more missiles at us. It was never really initiated, there was some R&D that wasn't very promising, then a scant five years later, the Cold War ENDED, and our entire zillion dolloar stockpiles of weapons, deployment systems, and countermeasures were suddenly collecting dust and useless. (To us anyway. All of a sudden there's thounsands of WMD's lying around that various *terrorist* organizations would love to get their hands on...)

I don't remember where I read it, but there was a respected movie reviewer who once called it "The perfect movie." Not sure if I can agree entirely with that, but I can't argue against it either. It's one of those rare movies that respects your time/money investment vs the amount of entertainment it squeezes in there and the only other movies I can think of off the top of my head that really do that "perfectly" are Back to the Future and Aliens (among a few others, those are just the ones that immediately come to me). EDIT: Robocop 2 isn't quite as good, but good lord, the namesake monster they created for it was a thing of nightmares; the warehouse scene to me is burned into my consciousness as how to do "palpable robotic terror" right.

They actually marketed this movie to children with Robocop action figures, since it developed a pretty sizable following among younger people who would find ways to watch it on VHS, despite the graphic violence. I watched it in the early 90's when it was still pretty popular due to the sequels, and fell in love with it immediately. To this day it holds up, with its timeless satire of corporate greed and consumerism, and its super convincing practical effects and gore. The ending ties a nice neat little bow on Murphy's character arc of rediscovering his humanity, and they've never really been able to recapture the magic since.
