Like the leap from propeller to jet, the next great sep is upon us in military aviation, and this one, is a little more terrifying
After all, its replacing the pilot with silicon.
Introducing the loyal wingman, the next generation of military aircraft that is going to literally take the man out of the pilot seat.
New drones like the Turkish Bayraktar have literally changed the tide of war and their role in the future cannot be ignored anymore.
The technology is quickly reaching the point where its more effective to operate a fleet of droned aircraft than meat-based fighter pilots. But does this herald a golden age, or are we simply setting up ourselves for a real life terminator?
Let’s jump into it.
Drones go back farther in time than you might realize. The first military drone-like object were the balloon bombs that Field Marshall von Radetsky of Austria used to attack Venice - rather unsuccessfully, I might add - in 1849.
Their capabilities have become increasingly sophisticated. Importantly, drones are being developed to be used in lock-step with manned aircraft, such as fighter jets.
The emerging class of super-smart drones known as the ‘Loyal Wingman’ are already being tested and their role with sixth-generation fighter jets is of particular interest
Over time, UAVs or drones have evolved to include missions such as manned-unmanned teaming, aerial refueling, electronic warfare, and other modes of military-related functionality.
In fact just recently the US performed the first mid-air refueling with a drone aircraft, breaking ground in the class’s utility.
A recent report stated that over 5,000 drone aircraft will be built per year by 2027, in over 101 countries as a part of their military operations. So far there are 50 or so development programs, but only a handful of nations have seen, air quotes, killer results.
Top players include the worlds powers as US, China, Russia, EU and UK, but surprisingly entries are also Australia, Japan and South Korea, which we will get to in a moment.
The Blackhorse in the race to build military drones is Turkey, whose new TB2 Bayraktar performing very well in recent conflicts in the region.
The Boeing ATS, also referred to as Loyal Wingman, is the epitome of a modern UAV, which means it’s all about stealth and being multi-functional.
Importantly, it serves the role of what is known as a force multiplier aircraft that can fly alongside manned aircraft. It can also be used for autonomous missions. Importantly, artificial intelligence or AI is integral to the central design philosophy and various capabilities of Boeing’s Loyal Wingman.
A key technical feature of this military drone is its modular mission package system, whereby its AI is located in its nose.
The craft’s nose can be quickly and easily removed and replaced with another nose having a completely different set of equipment or armament guidance systems, while the spy tech or weapons are loaded in the internal bay. This means the Loyal Wingman can be quickly deployed for a variety of different and very specific missions, which can include combat, reconnaissance and, most specifically to this class of UAV, electronic warfare.
The nose, by the way, is 2.5 metres or 8.2 feet long and offers a storage volume of more than 1.5 metres or 5 feet cubed.
But what weapons will it carry? Sorry to disappoint, but so far Boeing has been tight-lipped leaving us only speculation. We know that air to air missions might be equipped with Aim-9s for bomber escorts and inceptions, and we would rule out tactical ground strikes.
Furthermore, another plus is that its fuselage is made of composite materials that use an advanced resin-infusion process, which results in a lighter and more durable craft.
The drone has an integrated on-board sensor package that should more than ably support its three core functions, namely intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, as well as tactical early warning missions. Besides allowing the drone to fly independently or support a manned aircraft it accompanies, its in-built AI also ensures that it maintains a safe distance between itself and other aircraft at all times.
The specifications of the Loyal Wingman include the following:
Crew: None - well, that should be obvious!
Length from tail-end to nose tip: 11.7 m or 38 feet 5 inches
Wingspan: 7.31 metres or 24 feet across
Range: 3,700 km or 2,300 miles, which equates to 2,000 nautical miles.
Boeing claims that its Loyal Wingman will ultimately have performance comparable to that of a conventional fighter jet. In the words of Boeing:
“It will provide fighter-like performance.”

Ehmmm yes totally agree. We all remember what happened at Creech AFB. Someone with a USB stick gets into the system? Then connects to the US AFs entire drone combat fleet. They had to ground 80% of the fleet and ended up removing and replacing the hardware to get rid of the virus. They really should test every program first before they run it. Use it in a secure sandbox and make it open up docking bay doors 24/7.

A set win would not be 40-0 or 40-love. It would be the 4th point scored against "0" for your opponent or the next 2 points scored to break a 40-40 tie. There is no corresponding number for the 4th point like 15 (1st point), 30 (2nd point) & 40 (3rd point).

We could double our cabability without tripling our budget. I picture 1 plane with 2 of these hanging back being ewar spammers with the rest of a flight each having 1 or 2 also in tow acting as "targets" and also carrying more weapons - slave them to each "motherships" weapons systems to have 1 plane with 2-3 times the warload essentially

I so happy for you that Australia got the opportunity to build these! Which I believe UCAVs will let humans fly faster more capable and expensive machines perhaps hypersonics and sub-orbital space fighters and bombers. While they die in the thousands... which is also why Loyal wingman rubs me the wrong way... A much better name would be little friends like what the B-17 crew called their escorts.

This is an end game that would ultimately be decided by industrial capacity. Robot fighter aircraft may temporally hold back an invasion but cannot stop long-range missiles. As an offensive vehicle, it needs to be at a relatively close range to perform its mission. Capital ships and carriers will be missile bait, so carrier-based planes would be useless.

we need to find a way to make these things able to have foldable wings so they can fit in lets say a storage container and make a launch system that fits in said container then let's make some big flying wing aircraft like maybe the XB-35, make it unmanned and put a bunch of X-47s on the massive wings for the most storage and boom the ultimate weapon of war maybe put some other stuff on it too, maybe one of those high powered lasers on ships but upsize it and make it an anti ground weapon, some sort of electromagnetic shield of sorts, and who knows maybe nuclear weapons I mean this is an amazing and original idea what could go wrong?

Australia... The first line of defense for the next war... the "Loyal Wingmen" is the way to reduce the numerical disadvantage on such possible conflict, cheaper, without a long time of training... But I am afraid of the drones that can combat by themselves... Are stupids and soot when the conditions are met... so the destruction of a car or passenger plane is expected.

They don't fire unless commanded to. They are not controlled by AI, just controlled remotely. It's basically the same as a normal fighter jet, only with no risk to the pilot.
@haha-eg8fj
@haha-eg8fj 2 года назад
@@Lucasxd331 I doubt it. The future path definitely aims to fly by itself, otherwise why not just use an existing model? Remote control drones can hardly adjust to the forever changing situations during air combats.
@Lucasxd331
@Lucasxd331 2 года назад
@@haha-eg8fj It's semi-autonomous. It can fly and adjust to wind conditions, speed, altitude, etc, just like your average plane can do with autopilot, but things like target acquisition and shooting are manual commands (These robots can execute these commands on their own, but the pilot of the main aircraft is the one with the power to order them). For now, at least. I see no near future where AI can replicate a veteran pilot perfectly though, and until that happens, the "wingman" will only fulfill the role of extension of the pilot's arsenal by carrying an extra load of missiles or bombs.

My point is, ultimately given enough incumbent threat modifiers in any AI vs strategic engagement, a computer has to make a basic risk associated analysis of survivability in the same way a person does but ofcourse the computer is not alive and so, if pressed enough, its least risk is to cease to exist.

Yeah, I feel like capability is overstated. It's like the difference between a computer chess player and an ai controlled robotic arm playing chess against a human player. The AI tests you cited. There is a galaxy of action between a cyber stated control system and the reality that it would ostensibly operate in, IRL.

I don't inherently have a problem with UAV projects, but I do take some issue with people trying to remove humans from combat completely. I have no issue with man and machine working together, we've been doing that for years in some way or another, which is why the loyal wingman project interests me, but I do have problems with the idea of trying to replace the human in an aircraft, or any combat vehicle completely. People who have, and plan to join the forces, such as myself, do so knowing that they're putting their safety at risk for others. And nobody joins the forces hoping they can operate a remote control vehicle miles from a combat zone. I'm sure there're special situations which take exception, but in general, we need to work WITH these machines, not replace ourselves with them.
@HalNordmann

And there is also the "push-button-warfare" problem. Simply put, you are far more likely to have unnecessary civilian casualties if you don't actually fight the enemy yourself - your brain simply can't form as much of an empathic connection with a symbol on a screen as with an actual human being.
