What is the perfect golf ball for your game? We spent a week using the R&D robot at the Sports Technology Institute at Loughborough University to find out! 🤖 🏌️‍♂️
Testing 28 different golf balls at three driver speeds (85 MPH, 100 MPH, 115 MPH), with a 7-iron, and a wedge, we identify which golf balls are the best fit for you.
Based on the data created we choose our top-performing Tour, Club Golfer and budget balls and explain what you need to know to select the best ball for your own game.

Found a Wilson Triad a few weeks back and played it. Got my 5th hole in one with it (and won a lot of money). It is straight because they use more weight on the peremiter of the core instead of the center.

What a great test and breakdown Simon, thank you! I loved your 2019 test (still have it bookmarked in my browser) and am super thankful for the update! I do have one question, which might be a dumb one, but I am curious how "club golfer" is defined. I haven't heard that term much here in the U.S. Would that include mid-handicappers and/or mid-swing speeds? For instance, I'm a 10 hcp with driver speed of 100mph. I currently play the ProV1...but am seriously eyeballing the more modestly priced Triad and ERC Soft after your video and article. Thanks again for your time and talents in putting this all together!

Thanks so much for the feedback, really appreciate you taking the time. Pretty much we see club golfer as anyone who's not playing to an elite level. In the UK we'd see that as County Level, handicap wise that means probably 5 and up. It takes in mid handicappesr, high handicappers and slow to quick (but not too fast) speeds. Hope that helps.

Great review guys and I am a regular reader of your mag. Keep up the good work. With advancing years my swing speed has dropped below 90, more realistically mid 80's and while I have always used the Pro V1 I have been looking for what might give me best distance with overall performance. I have been trying the Tour Speed over the past few months but I don't see any reference to it in your tests and wonder why? I have to say I like the softer feel but on the downside note it marks quite easily, yet it seems to perform quite well.

Thanks for your feedback Bill, it's much appreciated. There simply wasn't enough space to include every golf ball. Most frequently we hear the Pro V1 and Pro V1x names when golfers are talking Titleist golf balls, and the pair are seen very much as the benchmark that many are compared against. A fact much less true for the rest of the Titleist family. #HopefullyNextTime Hope that helps.

Love the review, but maybe I am missing something - If the average swing speed with a driver is 92/93mph, then why not test at that speed? I fit into that bracket (averaging 220-230yds), however when I average out the figures from the 85/100mph test, I am getting 216/217 yds, but strangely the Pro V1 is longer that the Srixon XV, yet I know in the real world I am getting a 4-5 yards more from the Srixon, Means while there is a great deal of data, I still find it difficult to decide which balls to go for!

Fantastic work Simon and team, thank you for your efforts! Question - Any thoughts on why the Callaway Chrome soft X LS shot area seems to jump from 20.4 to 114.9 Sq yds when upping the driver speed from 100 MPG to 115MPH. I was expecting the lower spin to correlate more with accuracy. It sort of gets a bit 'wild'. Thanks all.
@todaysgolfer
@todaysgolfer 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for the feedback Andrew, appreciate you taking the time. We'd only be speculating, but a single ball with a slightly off centre core could have this effect. Hence why we like to look at averages for accuracy and not focus too heavily into any particular single situation. Hope that helps.

The test methodology was excellent but I do think you need to add a senior statistician and as indicated below it would be helpful to measure the manufacturing quality control (ie is it round, is there any bias, are weights consistent) and at the end of the test cut up every golf ball to see if you can see differences in quality control. As you said the data set for each type of ball is 12 shots with each club/speed combination. That is a relatively small data set and raises the issue of whether the differences between any 2 balls is statistically significant or merely by chance - and whilst I am not a fan of p- value tests, I am not a professional statistician, and you need someone with that skill set to determine the best statistical test applicable to each part of the data to determine whether differences in the data are statistically significant. IMO when you look at the data some clear things emerge. There is no statistically significant differences in ball speed or launch angles no matter what club is being used and what swing speed with a couple of exceptions at the highest swing speed there are differences if, but only if, you compare the lowest compression ball against the highest compression. Basically unless you have an extreme swing speed and are comparing extremes of compression, all golf balls irrespective of compression perform in terms of ball speed and launch angle the same - "soft is slow" is simply unsupportable by the data. There are only 3 variables which show any clear differences: spin rates, peak height and accuracy. Accuracy may be linked to manufacturing quality control so as mentioned above that needs to be tested. Titleist has traditionally had the best manufacturing QC but it is starting to look like Wilson are even better.

It’s just wild to me that we go through all these tests and see how well the Kirkland performs in the areas that are really needed from 110yds and in, then it doesn’t even make the list? Yes it did get out performed (marginally) by one or two three piece balls but it is seriously a third of the cost of all the other three-piece balls you tested and that is a huge factor when purchasing. I’ll put it this way if you’re purchasing three piece balls as a club golfer and you don’t have Kirklands in your bag then get some!

great video, data and methodology. Not sure if I missed something on the shot area analysis. Is that based on extrapolation from two swings? If so, it seems to me the sample size is too small. I think 2 swing sample size for distance and most other metrics are reasonable given the two brand new balls consideration, If possible, I think for shot area analysis, brand new ball consideration is not important but more swings are needed. Then against, that does run into your robot time constraint.
@todaysgolfer

Thanks for the feedback, the total shot area was averaged over 60 shots. That's 12 shots from each of the five situations.

This was very informative and well done. As you were limited in choice of what balls to test, Titleist has a ball the AVX that gives the best of ProV 1 and ProV1x , yes I’m a Titleist player, but have the R&A and the USGA contacted you about your results. Since the talk now is about rolling back the ball. As you stated the club golfer should be considered. As when they lose their Wilson or whatever ball and find a ProV they are going to play it until they lose that one also.

Why weren't DTC balls tested, as the new Snell and Vice balls have been very highly reviewed especially at their price points. Great video, I had just picked up some Maxfli Tour Xs to try, glad I did.
@todaysgolfer
@todaysgolfer 9 месяцев назад
Thanks for the feedback, good to her you're liking the Maxfli. On the DTC balls. Our thinking was there’s only a couple of factories globally that can make urethane covered golf balls, that aren’t owned by Titleist, Callaway, Srixon, Bridgestone and TaylorMade. So, all the DTC companies that have started up over the last decade use the same couple of factories. Those factories and brands spend very little on R&D so there’s tiny amounts of difference between the golf balls they produce, and virtually all are sold as Pro V1 alternatives. On this occasion we took the decision to leave them all out, but perhaps a similar DTC only test in the future could be worthwhile, even if their performance is so very closely matched.

@@Ryglado It matters if you want to create data that relates to real world golfers for sure. We were lucky thanks to Ping's work with Loughborough Uni and through using this particularly robot, that it was possible to set the robot up using a real golfers swing. The attack angle for 7-iron was down between 5 and 6.5deg, where for the wedge it was 7.5 - 10 deg. Hope that helps.

Most informative, I need to look at the website with a beer in hand, though fortunately for my bank balance I have a lot of new balls already (I tend to buy the ones I use when they are on offer)! One thing that wasn't mentioned is that for the higher handicapper who slices the ball a low spinning ball may be the best option even though they would sacrifice spin into the greens as that (side) spin created with a slice will hurt them both from an accuracy and distance perspective?
@todaysgolfer
@todaysgolfer 9 месяцев назад
Thanks Adrian, appreciate the feedback. Yes you're right, hence why most lower budget balls target lower spin, so they're longer and more accurate, so long as you have the speed to launch them. We mentioned about the Kirkland being a reasonable alternative to a 2-piece ball if you have very low speed, as you give very little up against the longest balls, but gain iron and short game spin, which could be useful, so long as you're not really inaccurate. Hope that helps.

@@todaysgolfer Thanks this is just what us golf geeks need as there's very little comparison data out there to allow us to make an informed choice. I've been using the RX version of Bridgestones for years during the golfing season after beong fitted for them when the B330's first appeared on the market and AD 333s during the winter but once my stock drops your data will give me some good steers on where to go. What I think will be useful is when golfers try a new ball, if it's not for them they'll then be able to revisit your data to fine tune their next purchase. Keep up the good work 👍

Great video very many thanks for conducting the test. Noting the use of GC Quad… how is ball dimple aerodynamics taken into account? I’m assuming GCQuad uses the same model for each ball, and therefore you are not getting a complete assessment of the differences in ball dimple designs?
@todaysgolfer

Thanks Alan. If you really want to study aerodynamics a Trackman gives the best information at it picks up data points later in the balls flight. But it will also pick up any wind or conditions interference too. For this test we've just used Foresight's standard algorithm. Hope that helps.

It would be great if you can take the data from each box of 12 balls and work out the average variance between balls in a box. The idea being which balls, in a dozen, perform the most equally from ball to ball. This is good to know as we may change our purchase if we know a certain brand/make will perform relatively the same from ball to ball.
