Hello Plum Island Friends Tracey, Julie and Jaxyn who I met on the beach while filming! It was their very 1st trip to Plum Island and they drove up from Groton CT in this stormy weather to hit the beach! Thanks for flagging me down! I loved meeting you all and chatting with you about shells and your exciting beach adventure! Next time I hope the weather is a lit-o-bit warmer for you! Thanks for braving the cold and visiting the island!
❤✌ Today we do some stormy beaching because a winter storm is brewing! The sky was dark and even though we hit double digits - 33 degrees on the beach, with the rain and wind it was SUPER cold out there! Snow was in the forecast and the rain was starting to freeze, but it was an hour from dead low tide and we had shells to find. The wind was brutal whipping the sand across the beach - apologies for all windy audio the nose "sniffys" - C-H-I-L-L-Y. Thank you all for watching and subscribing - it keeps me coming back even in this wet, raw bitter weather.
Rock Shells! Today we started by heading out by the Emerson Rocks, but decided to explore Bar Head. There was a lot of beach to cover and so many shells, but so little time with the storm heading our way! Our finds include some really large dark moons, dog whelks, bones, some sand dollars and a large piece of red banded Jasper - which was my most favorite find of the day!

❤✌ Visiting Plum Island Massachusetts ❤✌
Most IMPORTANT thing 1st: All of the really great shells I find in my videos are inside the Parker River Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge is closing 99.9% of the beaches from April 1st 2022 to August 2022 in an effort to protect protect the Piping Plover nests. Piping Plovers are endangered and the beaches are closed in an effort to help raise the plover population. When the beaches close, there is no beach access. The 1st gate will remain open, but it's not good for shelling. At the very end of the refuge (after gate 7) there are the Bar Head Rocks (featured in this video). Those rocks are located on Sandy Point reservation (which is Ipswich Ma and not part of the parker River Wildlife Refuge.) That section will remain open! It's VERY good for shelling.
If you want the full Plum Island experience (all 11 miles of beach) - late August, September, October, November and December are great months. The off season is best because during the summer the island is very congested.
The spring is ok, but the weather can be very unpredictable as you can see from watching my videos.
Green Heads: We also have Green head flies that start swarming early July through August. They love the beach and they bite. They are like mosquitos on steroids.
Where to Shell: The Parker River Wildlife Refuge Gates 5 to Bars Head is amazing for shelling.
It's always best to contact the refuge before booking any trips if you are coming specifically for shelling and the beaches. This way you are sure the gate to the lower lots will be open along with the beaches.
The website: www.fws.gov/re...
Where to stay: There are Air BNB's all over the island, but The Blue Inn is SPECTACULAR. Right on the ocean - I am a huge fan. Newburyport is right over the bridge and it's perfect for New England Charm. Tons of restaurants, Inns and Air BNB's.
Where to Eat: There are several restaurants on the island, to name a few of my favorites: The Beachcomber, The Plum Island Grill, Bob Lobster, Georgie Porgies.
Newburyport: Sea Level is my absolute favorite! As well as The Park Lunch.
Other Activities: Plum Island Kayak, Newburyport Whale Watches, Fishing Charters, Surfing, Sailboat Tours - so much fun!
...And if you see me on the beach, be sure to flag me down and say hello!

That sounds like fun. Suggestion? Try seeing if someone in your area has one. For the size of the rocks you're finding you might need a floor model. I've been to a few local gem and geode shows. The ones they use are heavy duty! If you're talking something less then a quarter sized, you may be able to go smaller. But it sure is cool to have them cut right in front of you!!😀❤

Those are the Bar Head rocks (where I shelled in my last video). Good shelling - be careful on the rocks - slippery. They close the beaches to protect nesting plovers. @@PlumIslandSeaCabin We only hear it when watching YOUR videos on our smart TV--no one else's RU-vid videos. We decided to watch your videos on the computer and didn't hear the sound at all, making it seem like a problem with our TV speaker. But then why don't we ever hear the sound when watching SWF Beach Life, Northern Mudlarks, Dirty Secrets of Scotland, etc., etc? (It makes NO sense at all to us, but I guess from now on we'll just watch your videos on one of our computers?!?)
