This week's reaction comes courtesy of fantastic young singer Diana Ankudinova. She has a tonality that you don't often hear in the setting of contemporary music, so I really enjoyed listening to this take on one of Elvis' biggest songs.
Let me know what you guys think as I'd love to discuss her singing with you, and as always please let me know in the comments what other songs of hers you'd like me to check out. I'd love to hear about them.
Feel free to check out my other reactions:

Here are three reasons why Diana (the Queen of Goosebumps) doesn't sound human. First, she is a contralto, which is the absolute rarest type of female voice. It allows her to sing very dramatic/powerful, very (I mean VERY) deep, very dark, very rich. Second, she has a spectacular larynx. She's been called the vocal Eighth Wonder of the World. Third, she is polyphonic, which means she can produce multiple harmonics within her voice at the same time. This is what allows her to sound like two people at once. (more below) When you add all that up you basically get a person who creates her own auto-tune. She doesn't need electronic auto-tune. She IS her own auto-tune. And the effect when you hear her is totally mind-blowing. It's like she's singing right through you, like a sword straight into your soul. Literally NOBODY else on the planet has a voice like hers. She's not one in a million, she's one in seven billion. Everyone sings, but one of the judges is special. The one who most vividly appreciated Diana's voice. The one who was standing listening to the song. He is an opera singer who is considered one of the best voices in the world. His name is Yusuf Eyvazov. He is a dramatic tenor, the husband of the great opera star of our time, Anna Netrebko. Yusuf is welcome at all the best opera venues in the world, where the best of the best voices of the world sing, on such stages as the Mariinsky Theater, the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, the Vienna State Opera, the Bolshoi Theater, the Paris National Opera and others. Who, if not he, can appreciate the voice? And he, at the end of Diana's performance, was crying. It's worth a lot. This is worth more than the opinions of millions of reactors and judges. This episode's guest star Yusif Eyvazov said: "You know I'm struggling to articulate what I've felt. I've heard many music in my life, I sing along all over the world. I have seen a lot of concert halls and people, orchestra and musicians.... ....This girl got just an incredible talent hidden inside, and may God give that this talent gets into good hands, people who can do with it what she deserves in the future which Diana herself deserves."

Hi everyone, I am from Brazil, a week has passed since I first heard for the first time Diana’s voice, and as of right now, I’ve probably watched all her performances, 15 times or more each… not ashamed to admit, but reading thru comments, seems to me I am not the only one, YES, I’ve been bitten, bewitched, drugged…enchanted! I am not a singer or artist, just a regular dude, but I can honestly say I never experienced thru music what I am experiencing with Diana’s performances, it’s all pretty new to me and I love it. At this point I am just wishing she will be able to cope with all the talent she’s been given, and all the attention she’s going to receive from people all over the world, that she grows as a decent woman ( not what we have been seeing lately by other singers) which by the way, I think is not going to happen, by the decent way she dresses up and behaves… (thank you Diana’s mom for that), anyways, I really wish to be seeing more of Diana’s performances in the years to come, and be blessed with her voice and artistry.

😆😆😆😆 If you listen to her sing at her concerts, she is singing with polyphonics; she sounds exactly the same. Diana is a mystery to most, which is why people are attracted to her voice. There is post-production that is disappointing but there is nothing fake or added with Diana. She is her own auto-tune! The space she has anatomically let's her resonators create a distinct sound, it is not something that can be imitated (voice coaches have tried). You will understand and get it as you listen to her more 🙂 I have not read any comments yet...just ignore the really defensive people because people really like Diana and sometimes they tend to not understand, it is difficult to know what Diana is doing because they have not heard this kind of voice before. As for the defensive ones I'm finding it interesting how some of my Russian viewers seem to be picking up a condescending vibe from my video, and I'm wondering if that might be a language barrier or some sort of cultural difference because I'm not aware that I've said anything negative or along those kind of lines at all. Makes me wonder how my mannerisms might be coming across to non English speakers, but I don't take it personally. And yeah I'm really enjoying hearing Diana's voice, it makes me want to explore some darker sounds in my own singing. Even in rawer performing environments she still has that kind of sound and it's is pretty cool to see that it's not been embellished too much for TV. She has a unique voice for sure. Peace and love mate. Take care.

Greetings from Scotland! I'm not going to dispute your observations but I will give you a little background on this phenomenal singer's life - so far! Diana is 19yo currently but I've been following her since she was around 13yo. Diana is a natural Dramatic Contralto so the lower registers are her comfort zone but she now has around a 4 octave range and it's increasing. She also naturally sings with polyphonic overtones so it sounds like many voices at the same time! HOW you ask? Please continue reading............ Diana's birthmother had multiple miscarriages but when Diana came along, she seemed to hate her. She verbally and physically abused her, trying to drown her, strangle and belittle her. It all culminated when (at 3yo) she dragged her to a bus stop with a broken collarbone and abandoned her, saying "Survive if you can" A passing relative took her in but because she cried constantly (naturally with a broken collarbone) she took her to the authorities who removed Diana from her birthmothers care and placed her in an orphanage. For almost 2 years Diana never gave up hope and she knew that she was meant for something better. (This story is in her Wikipedia entry) Finally her new mother (Irina Ponik, who worked as a masseuse there occasionally) Signed her adoption papers and took her home. She vowed to pay Irina back for her kindness. Irina had a real struggle because Diana had obviously been badly affected by the experiences and at 5yo, she had a very bad stammer. It was recommended that she be taken for singing lessons to help this and immediately it was recognised that Diana had perfect pitch and an excellent ear for music and songs. 1 year later, at 6yo, Diana was performing solo on stage! She is a rapid learner! This young unique phenomenon sang everywhere and anywhere she could, working constantly to earn money for the family who rescued her. At 13yo she held her 1st solo concert and one of the songs she sang was in a very rare Sephardic Jewish/Spanish dialect, a song called "Me Voy" (I'm leaving) with a power and emotional commitment that staggers belief! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pnlgB90iTf0.html (She has already sung in *7 languages, Russian, English, French, Spanish, German, Ukrainian and Arabic!!!*) She was already winning every contest in Russia and other countries that she could get to. Then at 14yo Diana took part in an amazing Russian project "You are Super" for abandoned/disadvantaged children (because Diana spent time in an orphanage) The 1st song she performed shocked the judges and audience so much, it went viral. February 10, 2018 "Dernière Danse" in French ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TvNIXBjaDxI.html The rest, as they say, is now history!.............

Thank you for sharing, though it's obviously a very sad story to read about. That kind of trauma from what I've seen tends to age children and make them come across as really mature for their age because of having to process that kind of horrific experience. I'm sure we can see elements of that in Diana's stage presence, as she seems incredibly intense while performing for such a young girl in a couple of her earlier clips that I've been checking out. It's horrible that she's been through such an ordeal and that she has that kind of pain to draw on, but it does give an amazing depth to her performances I must say. I hope she's in a good place now mentally and physically. She's a very gifted singer and I look forward to seeing how she grows as she I'm sure she'll only improve with time.

Obviously live is her performance of "Horses", just her with microphone and speaker singing to a backing tracknon a tiny stage. Best way to hear her pure voice, just with a little bit of reverb. Also phenomenal: Rechenka, where she is showing many more vocal tricks that became a trademark of hers.

Cheers mate, I love it. That's exactly the kind of thing I look for when analysing a singer's voice. From what I've heard so far I'm not really hearing obvious polyphonics (though I'm admittedly far from an expert on them,) and I'm inclined to think that people are simply calling it that because of her unique tone and their desire to find a word to describe it. She tends to sing with a lower larynx than the average in contemporary music and more openness in various places in her throat from what I can tell, and the way she has to narrow other areas in order to maintain clarity emphasises different formants than what I think a lot of us are used to hearing. I haven't seen too much of her yet though so I could be completely wrong and maybe she does display polyphonics more obviously in certain performances. I'll have to keep listening and see what comes up. Thanks again for the link.

No effects in post production- that is really her. Keep in mind she is a contralto, so at the lowest end of the female voice, but with phenomenal range: D flat 3 to B flat 5. You should watch a few other clips- for her polyphonics and multiphonics, yodeling skills, ability to belt, and so on. An amazing singer. Songs to check her out: Rechenka, Wicked Game, Human, Jodel Time (when she was 13!).

Yes, it was a show, but not an ordinary show. In it, professional popular singers, each of whom has a wide fan audience, compete on the same stage. They give scores to each participant separately (except themselves) from 1 to 9 without the right to repeat. All participants are professionals and everyone is interested in winning. Winning such a show on the central channel allows you to raise the singer's rating even higher than he was before the show. This is a live performance and all kinds of overdubs, except for backing vocals, and sound effects won't work on it. Other participants will be against it, since this is a show of performers, not sound engineers.

There's so much to learn and experiment with, and to be able to share that journey and engage in discussion about the topic with others on the internet from all around the world so that I can improve my own abilities (and possibly help others do the same,) is an absolute joy, one that I wish I had access to when I first started singing. I'd have a hell of a lot more figured out and would of wasted a lot less time if this kind of forum for discussion had been around when I started.

She often makes covers her own way, this is her artistic choice. The song really sounds unusual in a minor key - a bit sombre, dramatic and more solemn. Sounds great in my opinion. I also enjoy her covers of Human, Wicked Game and Dernier Dance (the last one is in French). Thanks again!

It's great fun to get the chance to engage with people and see so many different perspectives towards music than my own and I'm enjoying the engagement I'm getting. I'm sure there's a language barrier here to be fair, and I'm sure that accounts for at least a couple of the negative comments I've gotten so far as I don't think my more cerebral appreciation of some of the artists I'm reacting to is translating well with that barrier being an issue. It's bound to happen. But yeah, Diana seems to be experiencing massive success and I don't think she needs any defending. Her skills speak for themselves, and I love the sound of her voice here. Hi and thx for your reaction ! People love to say Diana has no backing vocals behind and it's only polyphony. Which is (most of the time) true. But not during this contest. She has 2 pple, a man and a woman, to help her (contrary to the "You Are Super !" contest). I don't make up a story : she openly said it in an interview. On the other hand, her new vocal coach at this time trained her in her upper range, which she was not used to. In my mind, that’s maybe why she has the woman voice backing with her when she slides up, like a springboard you know, and she’s on her own after that, when she's already hit her upper range. 🤗
@Grays_Plays
@Grays_Plays Год назад
Hi there, thanks for your comment. Yeah I definitely hear a couple of backing voices or something like that going on, not including some of the choir type sounds in the background. I'd love to see some performances of hers where she does utilise polyphony, as I'm sure it's a very different sound and I'd like to see it in action to know how singers use it in the context of a song. I don't get why they'd have a unison here personally, as Diana's voice was perfectly capable of cutting through and sounding perfectly good on its own to my ears and to me it just seemed to distract from her own performance. Mid ranges are always the trickiest areas to navigate even for most professional singers though, so you could be right and maybe they had it there as insurance if she was new to it. I honestly couldn't guess though with how little I've listened to her voice so far. Thanks very much again for commenting.

It is not doubled Diana uses polyphonic singing, what you hear is not a low and a high tone at the same time
@olegandrianow2775
@olegandrianow2775 Год назад
The polyphony in Diana's voice is clearly audible in slow motion. This is clearly not a manipulation of language. If you listen carefully, you can hear the sound vibrating at a high frequency, when a low note alternates with a high one at a very high speed, which creates the effect of sounding two voices at the same time. By the way, the transition from a low octave to a high one also does not occur due to lowering or raising the larynx. Although it is, but not to the extent that all people have. Something about Diana is not arranged like that of ordinary mortals. She has unique ligaments and a huge laryngeal chamber, which together allows her to extract unearthly sounds. That's what I think. I am not an expert in this field and this is my private opinion. Perhaps it is erroneous. But surely, Diana's voice is a subject for scientific research.

There are hundreds of covers of this song and few touch me and come close to Elvis. Diana makes her own song out of it. Diana, also called goosebumps queen, sang the cover of the cover of the song by Elvis Presley in the first episode of the competition 'Шоумаскгоон' (ShowMaskGoOn). This was Diana's first adult competition in November 2021. She was the youngest competitor (aged 18) and wowed contestants and spectators with her first song. Rules: 9 winners of the previous shows 'The Mask', 'Superstar' and 'You are Super' took part in this new format and had to sing in 9 categories: folk hit, song at the end of the 20th century, Soviet song, pop hit, song your choice, new music, song from cartoon or film, rock hit, Grammy The man who jumps up is the world famous opera singer Yusif Eyvazov. He is also the husband of the world famous opera singer Anna Netrebko. He is the guest of honor and awards 9 points. Each episode has a new guest of honor. The competitors have to assess each other and have praised Diana to the skies. They said of their performance: 'Diana has no competition on the show - she amazes with her talent - it's impossible to tear yourself away from her - you want to listen endlessly, they're in tears and they're even afraid to blink' . 8 participants (Diana cannot score herself) gave Diana the highest score (9). From what I've seen so far (which admittedly isn't much,) I'm not hearing obvious polyphonics in her singing, and I'm wondering if people are saying that simply because she has a very unique tone and makes use of a much more open throat for the most part than the average singer and it emphasises certain harmonics more than we're used to hearing. I'll be diving a bit deeper into it as I think she's a fascinating singer that makes very effective use of a lot of unconventional techniques, and it's beautiful to listen to and inspiring for me in regards to wanting to develop my own singing and I definitely want to learn more.

Некоторое время назад у Дианы было четыре октавы. Сейчас, возможно, больше. она над этим работает.

One of the best examples of her vocal capabilities is Rechenka, from a few years ago. (I think there's also a more recent performance, but I'm not familiar with it) She's very young, but it's a creative and engaging performance.

Polyphonics from a childhood injury near her larynx, pharynx, i suspect.

I think it is better to say she has multiple resonances when she is not singing falsetto. Those resonances are based on her unique anatomy and sound almost as if she has a second voice. However, when she speaks she does not have that effect. I think when she drops her huge larynx she is able to create such unusual set of sounds mixed.

Many vocal and voice analysts have said that Diana is a polyphonic singer. I have quoted her performances in your reaction to Rechenka, but this song itself is a good example of her polyphonic voice. By the way, if you don't think she is polyphonic singer, please name some!

she had a backing track of her voice and some guys voice on this song.. there's a spectral analysis of this performance if your interested ill find the link. For a more raw acoustic "unproduced" you want to check out her singing "Me Voy" . Shes singing at a small club... great example to she her up close... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pnlgB90iTf0.html

Reminds me of Elsianne, she is singing in almost exactly same way (her first album appeared in 2007). So Elsianne must have been inspiration for her.

I think perhaps the issue is with your definition of "polyphonic". If you listen to her sing in her lowest register for example, C3/F3, she can simultaneously mix in strongly frequencies between 1 and 2KHz. This gives her a very unique sound. I think that this effect is more pronounced in Wicked Game than this song.
@Grays_Plays
@Grays_Plays Год назад
Yeah could be for sure. I'm thinking of the comparatively extreme demonstrations I've seen where there are 2 very distinct pitches that are able to be controlled independently of each other, which I'm not really seeing here to the same degree (or in other performances I've seen.) I'm also thinking of singers that are capable of producing 2 notes at the vocal fold level at the same time, kind of like David Lee Roth with his signature whistle voice type scream. With Diana it's probably something comparatively more subtle that I'm overlooking by getting caught up in terminology, as I do recognize some deliberate frequency manipulation going on with her singing, I just don't know enough about it technically to be on board with the term polyphonic based on what I've seen so far. She definitely has a very unique sound though and she clearly can dial it in at will, which I find really cool to listen to. I'll definitely have to give Wicked Game a look.

Quite refreshing to hear compared to all the lighter, brighter voice types that seem to be much more common.
