I needed to get rocks out of my garden and in the process I also got some clay out.
Here are the specs on the motor. It has an RPM of 1725/1140
1/4 hp
60 Hz
115 V
5.2/3.0 Amps
I researched on RU-vid for soil sifters and here are the thee clips I modeled my unit after.
Here’s the first short clip

This clip gave me an understanding of pulley sizes I needed to reduce the rotation of the drum to an acceptable level.

Will probably end up selling as it worked very well and have no need for it anymore.

Best explanation of the Trommel build. Didn’t know about needing to use duct tape, and how you got around that problem with sheet metal. Also smart thinking of bolts on the castor to make adjustments to them.

A very good video, sir! I might have to see about building one of these. Our garden seems to be mostly rocks with a bit of soil in it. This looked much easier to build and maintain than what I had in mind. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the video! Definitely a thumbs up. Going to see how to do this in series so I can get soil, but also to save out gravel and reject larger rocks.

Liked it! Built one myself last May 2020. I put wheels at output end and handles at input end. the angle is 5 degrees for your slant. I liked the tin strips you use for each end and mid. to protect the rollers. the legs were adjustable for height at all 4 corners ( for uneven terrain). Had to buy three pulleys, two belts, lots of tie Wraps online. Lined center rim with Duck tape to level off between tie wraps for better traction. now I get to use it on the other side of house. By! Stay healthy!

I built mine out of 1.5" x 1.5" , and added triangular corner braces top and bottom on the long sides. The bars holding the wheels are connected with bolts, washers and wing nuts so I can disassemble for storage. It all sits on saw horses. The motor and pulleys are on a board moveable laterally because of potential belt stretch; I use clamps to hold it in place. I have 23" rims; if I was to do that over I would get the wider rims from mountain bike tires as the rims I have are rather narrow; I had to get my knife out and trim the wheels to get them into the channel of the rim. So far I have not had problems with the dirt (clay) interfering with either the belt or the wheels.

My pulley and motor are adjustable as well. Each wheel is adjustable also. I’m about to dismantle for storage as I don’t have room to keep in operational form.

@@AgCWby90CS Both of us will have a gem of a sifter for compost. I am digging up my front yard, and clay does not break up; but if you smack it with the shovel first, it sifts just fine. Thanks for your video!

Dam. I was just thinking about building one. I use a old barrel Ring with 1/4 Screen across the ring. And I shake it. To sift. A good work out. Very smart man you are. Thanks.

Yes, I had a wooden one and got tired of shaking. 😀

Thank You! These are useful machines, and I know Bicycle Rims, are frequently used, but, I wondered if Motorcycle Rims would be an Option, for a More Durable Design? Plus,I wondered if anyone builds these in Longer Lengths, with Different Mesh sizes, like 1/4" at entrance, then 1/2" on second portion, with a strip of A Solid Area, like your Flashing, to allow a Divider to keep the two output grades, separated?
@AgCWby90CS
@AgCWby90CS 3 года назад
Motorcycle rims would require different track wheels and belt and maybe motor? There are longer ones on RU-vid. Search Trommel. Probably need a baffle underneath to keep grades separate, but I like that idea.

I love the idea of variable mesh from one end to the other.

The longer trommels with 3 grades of screens are for vermicompost or fine sifting finished compost. The can be very expensive...like $1,000+

Motorcycle rims are super strong compared to bicycle rims. IMO better to use aluminum than chrome plated steel, which will eventually chip, rust and flake. 18" and 21" diameter are the most common sizes. 21" x 1.85" wide (inside of flanges) is easy to find as it's used on the front of most dirt bikes. Rear rims are typically much wider.

Pulley size
@AgCWby90CS
@AgCWby90CS 2 года назад
@@sansarsingh2716 The larger pulley is roughly 10 inches in diameter and the smaller pulley is roughly 3 inches in diameter. These measurements are from outside of flange to outside so where the belt sits in would be a little less and those would be roughly 9 1/4 inches and 2 1/4 inches.

Sansar - You want the speed "Fast Enough" have the Material ride up some, but not so fast, it stay "Stuck" all the way around (like as if, it was a Centrifuge)! That might change, as well, depending on Diameter, and if Material is Wet, or Dry. Test, to suit your needs!

Converting from Motor Speed to Drum Speed is simple pulley math using the pulley diameters. Observe the video you'll see four pulleys. Each has a different diameter: Motor (M), Large (L), Small (S), Drum (D). The formula is simply: Drum RPM = Motor RPM * (M/L) * (S/D). The Motor RPM is 1725, so to gear-down the drum to a more manageable speed, make M & S small, and L and D large. D is already large (the bike rim), and is usually fixed in a project like this. You can play w the other values M, L, and S to get what you want. I reckon here: M=2, L=12, S=2, D=21 So: Drum RPM = 1725*(2/12)*(2/21) = approximately 30 RPM, which, isn't far off, watching the video.
