That's always been one that I think wasn't entirely his fault. The type of show Clive Anderson does is just like that. He probably went overboard with the insults, even though they were meant to be good-natured, but obviously it was too much. He seemed to feel more comfortable with them than they did with him. So the way he was joking would have been appropriate if they were longtime friends, but clearly that wasn't the case.

I was definitely on their side for that one. They even tried to laugh off the first few digs but he just kept insulting them.

Actually more to blame are the people writing the questions for the interviewer to ask. They never write down their own questions. In the case of Johnny Carson, every single question he asked came from someone holding the cards carrying the questions. Johnny Carson had charisma, but couldn't ask a question on his own if his life depended on it.

There was only two malicious questions: the short question and how many women have you slept with question.
