Not at all....this design for safety was looked at a LONG time ago, but the extra surface area of the shroud created so much drag that the idea was dropped completely.... Seems like a great idea, like a ducted fan, but water behaves much differently than air.....
@myresponsesarelimited7895
@myresponsesarelimited7895 2 года назад
Depending on the hull, it can be for displacement hulls due to speed, but yeah as the guy above said - it does ad drag on an outboard driving a plaining hull because resistance is increased exponentially with increasing speed, you mainly see it on IRBs for safety reasons, otherwise you only see it on large displacement hulls

@@imtheonevanhalen1557 I agree with what you said except the bit about aerodynamics and hydrodynamics being so different, i believe they're no more different than hydrolic and pneumatic rams, same thing- thicker medium, the first large foiling boats required programming to keep the boat flying in wether, even the Americas cup cat's are likened to flying a plane, not so much in the basic principle, but in terms of staying on foil as efficiently as possible, and it was aerodynamics that gave them a head start

Yeah, that is pretty low. However, its not quite as bad as it sounds. Since an electric motor has peak torque almost instantly regardless of RPM, it will feel like about 3-4 times the HP rating in acceleration.

Yes, it doesn't make sense to not sell it as an outboard that can be mounted to any vessel. This would be perfect for sailboats with no other motor. It seems like it'd be much lighter than other electric outboard options.

@DIYDaveT
@DIYDaveT 2 года назад
@@donkanis6141 I have no doubt that they can make a 500 horsepower motor. But the battery technology does not exist to power this for more than a few minutes. Not even when we are talking about a large yacht such as I own, a 42' Chris Craft Commander which barely goes 16.5 kts burning 35 GPH on twin 454 Crusaders @ 600HP. Propulsion is a system. It is the weakest link that counts, not the strongest.
@donkanis6141
@donkanis6141 2 года назад
@@DIYDaveTYour a bit behind in your info. I have a 41 Hatteras with twin Detroit 671’s. I'm also a Tesla shareholder and keep very current with Tesla tech. Replacing these heavy engines and loaded fuel tanks with a 4680 battery and twin 500 hp Tesla ELECTRIC motors (which are MUCH more powerful than diesel) would be a big big improvement in every way.
@DIYDaveT
@DIYDaveT 2 года назад
@@donkanis6141 LOL. It seems you are a bit behind in your physics. It takes the consumption of 35GPH of gasoline to move my yacht at 16.5 kts. This is about normal for this older, solid glass semi displacement hull using gas. Diesel is a bit better. 1 gallon of gas is about equivalent to 33.7 kWh of electricity. My boat holds 300 gallons and only gives me 150 miles of range at cruise. Miles of range are what boaters care about. Having electric motors does not change the amount of energy needed to move it from point a to point b at a given rate. The efficiency of conversion of fuel to kinetic energy (motion) for gas is around 35% (there is a range but this is ballpark). The efficiency of conversion of fuel to kinetic energy (motion) for an electric motor is much higher, realistically 90% or even a bit more. So let's just call it 3x more efficient for round numbers which is being quite generous to electric. That means it needs 1/3 of the kWh stored in my gas tanks in order to do the same work (traveling 150 miles at cruise speed). My gas tanks store 10,110 kWh electrical equivalent worth of fuel and so in order to get the same result from electric you need about 3300kWh of electricity. With the new cells, the Tesla model 3 has 82kWh in its battery pack. So you would need a whopping 40 of those packs at untold cost in order to match what I can do with 1990 gas engines. Unless and until battery technology makes a major leap they remain a hobbyist technology for boaters.
