All the things the Electric Outdrive don't have - oil changes, oil filters, spark plugs, fuel pumps, water pumps, special coolant, engine sensors (10), EFI issues, fuel filters, ignition units failing, spark plug wires and the Engine Control Unit. Wow - a lot of stuff to keep up with.

$250,000 for a boat , $25,000 for motors, who knows how much spent paying mechanics to maintain and fix them. It will fail eventually for something not covered by warranty. The more technical the more it’s unaffordable to just go out on the water. Microwave ovens were expensive then got cheap. Motors just go up and up. It can’t keep going for long. It’s already hundreds of dollars just for one day on the water. My 1991 Johnson is still going. How much longer can the market throw money at a boat. It’s like a dad can’t take his kid fishing anymore without mortgaging the house. Mechanics have to train to fix them and Marinas will be charging even more per hour to fix them.

I was kinda surprised by the price too since for this amount you can get more powerful electric outboard AND high end lithium packs designed for marine use. Albeit only in US for now. Electric propulsion in Japan is a far away dream for now. At least for me, i need to pass commercial use inspection. DIY most likely impossible.
@jimdrechsel3611

@@olegvinokurov1738 unless I am missing something the majority of the people I know could never justify or afford this high tech stuff. Henry Ford made an expensive technology cheap and mass produced it. Everyone must be a millionaire now and normalized to this kind of expense for let’s face it- a recreation vehicle for part time enjoyment but hey if you can afford this you pay people to maintain it, wash it, store it and fuel it. And that’s just in between trips to Europe. Industry can improve technology but they should bring cost down as a design criteria. That’s been lost. The more parts and electrical components the more costly and likely hood of something going wrong. Especially for a boat that sits idle for extended periods of time. The sun destroys everything and fuel breaks down inside. A big problem in Florida where fuel injection systems constantly need repair. If you can afford it have at it but it amazes me how many people can spend money for weekend recreation when the cost of living keeps going up.
@olegvinokurov1738

@@jimdrechsel3611 Occasional recreational use on power boats sure, doesn't make economical sense at all. Sail boats more tricky, depends on how much people actually sail and where. Quiet, no smell, "cool factor" can be worth a lot for some rich folk. In my case however it would break even rather quickly, not Harmo obviously. As great as it is, price stings. It's quite interesting that Japan seems to be technology advanced country, but quite few areas are heavily lagging behind. I'm going to check importing option, but not holding any real hope. And honestly, when parts and service is only available overseas it would be a dumb move for a commercial boat anyway.

@Ibian666
@Ibian666 2 года назад
This is easy to calculate. If it's a 6 kw engine then it uses 6 kwh per hour at full speed. Battery charging is never 100% efficient so figure another 50%. So about 10 kwh cost per hour of use. The required battery bank for that hour of sailing assuming normal lead batteries is 12 kwh capacity as you want to avoid discharging below 50% except in emergencies. That's about 220 kg of weight. Lithium is lighter and smaller for the energy capacity and can be discharged deeper, but is also five times as expensive.
@garyelderman1229
@garyelderman1229 2 года назад
@@Ibian666 More curious about how long the battery will last and overall long term effectiveness. I can really see a great market for anglers desiring a a quiet trolling motor and replacing a fuel powered "kicker" as insurance on big water. Your answer addresses ideal conditions.
@Ibian666
@Ibian666 2 года назад
@@garyelderman1229 Battery life depends on how much you discharge it and if you keep it properly charged. Lead batteries can last up to 10 years, but it depends how you treat them. If you fully discharge a battery it only lasts for 50 cycles. Hence, don't go below 50%, you will get hundreds that way.

Never? You really beleive even 20 years from now they can't compete. EV's today beat gas cars in price per mile even if you factor in battery replacement in the future. These outboards are dumb at the price being offered. Some manufacturer is going to be able to integrate EV motors into the hull that are comparative to to the ones in cars. The Tesla model S plaid has 3 motors that produce 1080hp combined. One of those motors would compete agaist the gas V8's found in 20ish foot Ski Boats today. Even with batteries it would take up substantially less room than a gas v8. You could reclaim 5 feet of your boat or have a 17' boat with as much room inside as a 22' boat.

@@tedunguent156 Who offers complete systems that can pass marine safety inspection? Big lithium packs are no joke in marine environment. It's quite similar to electric cars, not that easy to match batteries safely and efficiently. So it makes perfect sense to sell their own battery packs with secure connections, software, health monitoring system, properly sized cables etc. Using lead acid batteries is what doesn't make sense. But at mentioned price yep, i don't really see how it can be sold as stand alone solution. I was somewhat interested(twin 3.7kw small, but still in usable range for me) because there is basically no local solutions in Japan. But for 30k can buy a 25kw purpose designed outboard with two 9kw battery packs all in one system, the problem is importing it to Japan, which is quite a hurdle to overcome actually. As much as i want to go with electric propulsion and willing to accept limitations, won't be happening anytime soon.
@tedunguent156
@tedunguent156 2 года назад
@@olegvinokurov1738 You can use AGM (lead-acid) no problem and LiFePo batteries are fine as long as the temperatures are 35 degrees F or above. They even have LiFePo batteries that self-heat for lower temps. LiFePo will discharge just fine below freezing but can't be charged. Those LiFePo batteries have "secure connections, software, health monitoring" and bluetooth. It isn't as complicated as you are making it sound. That is why Yamaha doesn't need to get into the battery business. The near future (2023) will bring solid-state batteries to the market and that will be the catalyst that accelerates the move from ICE to electric. Don't kid yourself.
@olegvinokurov1738
@olegvinokurov1738 2 года назад
@@tedunguent156 Lead acid has way too low power density and low durability. In no wake zone or perhaps for sail boats to get in and out from marina sure, enough. Conventional marine lifepo4 also don't pack enough juice, i don't see anything better than 75-90wh/kg. Yamaha could have access to cells that common folk can't really touch and make battery packs with water/corrosion resistant connections. Few electric propulsion options available in US do so and their packs are at 150+ wh/kg. Anyway, price of Yamaha Harmo drive unit alone already makes in unviable option. Importing from US available systems will increase price at least two fold, which is also way more than ICE outboards with heavy use, hardly justified. Not going to break even.

Speed is poison if you don't foil! If boats are built for multiple engines (big and heavy) one problem is the distribution of the weight. It works better on a cat than on a monohull but not that well anyways. It's the wrong "angle of attac" to say: We have this boat, how to replace with electric? It must go the other way around. It's a little step forward to ditch the gasoline and go for diesel (OXE...) because there doesn't have to be fossil fuel in the tank. Attraction for size/speed is NOT the same as need. Not many civilians need a 40+ cc with 700+ hp. BTW, ePropulsion Navy 6.0 Evo WITH two batteries is 8400€ here in Finland. That is equal to a 10hp. Electric golf carts haven't evolved much at all in decades. They use flooded lead acid batteries which is also 50+ year old tech. I'd hardly declare decades old tech as "proof" of the current battery tech. You could replace the golf cart batteries with a lifepo4 bank and have it last decades. Silicate Salt batteries are a great option where conditions are harsh. An automotive manufacturer could design a lithium-ion pack with much better results than lead. It's simply not accurate to look at a design that hasn't changed in 50 years and make any claims it represents today's technology.

@@Ry-lx2kl while I will agree lithium ion Batteries are better. They still do not have the capacity or life span. Batteries are limited period. I don't care how old or new the technology is. Total electric cars, boats, or airplanes. Are not a wise decision. Let me also give you a few scenarios. 1. The life span: I have a 20 year old truck that still runs great. There is no way batteries will be affordable or the up keep on electric motors/ switches and relays to keep a vehicle in service that long. 2. The power grid: the power grid is not designed to put that many electric cars on it. Not to mention charging stations, and what are you going to do in the event of a major storm where power could be out for weeks. 3. The down time of charging. What is a family of 5 going to do for a hour while their car charges? Vs a 5 minute stop by the gas pump. Honestly there is a very small market for electric vehicles, but it is not a perfect or permanent fix. On one last note that many batteries sitting in a junk yard full of acid isn't any better for the environment.

It would account for 11% of the current household energy use. + 11% is not nothing but relative to how long it will take to 100% migrate to EV is completely doable. Charging ports available are quickly catching up to the number of gas pumps even though EV's only account for 0.29% of vehicles today. The efficiency of a model 3 Tesla is 275 watts per mile. Over 150k miles at super high California energy rates this comes in around $10k in "fuel" costs. A 30mpg car will consume 5000 gallons of gas in that same timeframe which is $30k at today's gas rate for $6/gal. These numbers get worse for gas cars if you use national averages. A Tesla model 3 is infinitely more fun to drive than a 30mpg car. Performace of electric slaughters the performance of ICE vehicles. A Tesla Model S plaid has 1080hp and can do the 1/4 mile in the 10's. You'd have to spend at least double to reach that performance with a gas car. That car likely wouldn't have 4 seats or be whisper quiet through town. The Tesla still gets that $10k per 150k miles while a gas car that could compete on performance would be more like $60k+ in fuel. The Tesla also won't require the 25 oil changes a gas car would in 150k miles and would require likely half the maintenance on brakes due to regenerative braking. EV's are definitely competitive against gas cars today and beat them in many ways. Even if you factor in a new battery somewhere down the line it still costs less than gas. Nearly every auto manufacturer is betting on EV's with dozens of models coming out in the next few years. There's a lot of smart people running the numbers and deciding EV is the way of the future - and making the bet with billions of dollars. Battery tech is improving quite fast. The price of the battery pack will continue to drop for quite some time.

Really cool concept but not gonna work when you have a fishing tournament and have to drive 300 miles or more when you can refill your engine with gas there wont be electric stations in the middle of nowhere. If you want to stay close and fish yea but for me this would never work for the amount of time on the water it would be holding me back. Thats the issues with electic cars as well. WHo wants to stop to charge every 300 miles for a hour? imagine everyone one the road needing a charge ! we would need thousands of pumps (electical stations ) at every gas station. NOt to mention if you have a electric truck pulling a boat you would make it 100 miles and need to charge in a ford lightning and they take 4 hours to charge !!! These batterys would have to drive 1200 miles for me to ever want to switch from gas. The only people i know that want a electric vehicle is the city folk.

EV's are a joke. Battery tech is not anywhere close to being ready for mass production. Run time on a wake boat will be short vs gas and go all day for a gas engine. And the cost of a intricate piston engine vs a electric motor should drop ev engine cost immensely but nope got to keep those high prices for a technology that's been around for a century plus....lol
