I like to imagine somewhere out there are silicon-based life treating water like an acid and telling alien stories of carbon-based life drinking the "dangerous liquid" as if it were ammonia or methane or whatever their water equivalent is
@blarg2429
@blarg2429 4 года назад
I've seen some creative writing stuff online that depicts humanity as being strange and fearsome in any number of ways, including this (often associated with the phrases "humans are weird" and "humans are space orcs"). What I wonder is: are there silicon-based beings out there writing short stories like that where their species' various traits that they consider normal for lack of any outside point of reference turn out to be weird or impressive? If we ever meet any aliens, will our societies be able to swap pre-contact "we're special and cool compared to aliens" fiction? I don't even mean stories of humanity triumphing over aliens, I mean stuff like our species being able to simply scream at volumes dangerous to aliens, being the only ones in the galactic community with hard teeth, and aggressively pack-bonding with everything we lay eyes on.
@Reddotzebra

@GamerFromJump
@GamerFromJump 4 года назад
blarg2429 - In the Ender’s Game series (I think), the notion of _individuals_ was strange to the aliens. They figured wiping out a colony was no big deal, and didn’t understand the furious response. Being have-minded insectoids, they didn’t consider individuals valuable.

@@GamerFromJump Yeah, we also have animals like that on earth. They're called ants.
@boa_firebrand
@boa_firebrand 4 года назад
@@blarg2429 yeah but most of those stories are based on the assumption that the aliens evolved from carbon-based life forms that were not pursuit predators, or were plants, either or really. Pursuit predation meant our evolution prioritized rapid healing and extreme amounts of endurance, so we ended up healing quicker but messier and are capable of going for days on end without sleep. the only creatures that heal faster than us are either only capable of healing quicker in one facet IE;lizards where regrowing limbs is possible, or don't have a brain IE;starfish.

I have always run on the theory that rock types are just bugs/crustaceans, since there are a few rock/bug type combos anyway. In my own personal thoughts, I feel that Rock Type, and by similarity, Steel types, are still Carbon based Lifeforms, BUT, that has Silicone Based skin. The hole eats the stone thing? I believe that it’s to absorb the Silicone by eating them, then use it to harden its skin. Like a few specific animals and slugs eating specific dangerous and toxic species to absorb its poison to become poisonous itself. It also could explain why the eat the Pokémon food. They still need it like Normal Pokémon. Anyhow, awsm Video! Keep ai it!

The issue with that is that hydrogen readily reacts with everything sans gold and the noble gases, and that is has only one valence electron. Most atoms want to reach a stable point of eight valence electrons, with hydrogen and helium being exceptions, where they only really want two. This means that under most circumstances, hydrogen can only ever really bond with one other atom. That's why hydrogen only ever really appears at the end of a chain. In fact, that's why many chemical diagrams omit writing hydrogen on chains when it's alone, like when a carbon atom is bound to two or three. The property of trying to get a stable valence shell is why carbon works so well and why it's thought that silicon could work. Since carbon (and silicon) have four valence electrons, they can give or take electrons to get to a stable valence configuration, either by actively receiving 4 electrons or by sharing them with another atom.

3:53 It's actually closer to CO2, but the one main difference between them being that SiO2 uses its Oxygen atoms to bond with other SiO2. Similar to how Carbon bonds with itself in diamonds. H2O doesn't do this (or at least not exactly that), it shares its Hydrogens with other water molecules to form OH- and H3O+ (or H+) ions but it's bonding force is much weaker between molecules than SiO2 and non organic Carbon structures.

Makes me think about how rock types would all have a common ancestor since they would have evolved seperatly from carbon based pokemon. I think it's important to consider the possibility of these creatures not being MADE of rock, but instead evolving a thick, stony integument (body covering) for defense. We see in golem that the creature is actually inside of the rock instead of actually being made from it. From the exposed parts of golem's body we can deduct that golem is likely to be reptilian in some form. This is strengthened by the existence of aggron, who consumes metal ore in order to form a mineralised 'shell' around the body. Aggron can definitely be placed as some form of reptile who likely forms a clade or group with tyranitar. Tyranitar doesn't have the most pronounced rock like skin, yet is still rock type. This, along with other pokemon such as bonsly and sudowoodo having green skin, solidifies this theory in my eyes. The reason for this adaption is of course, for defense. Pokemon like geodude, sudowoodo and nosepass would all likely be some form of first or second order consumer being preyed upon, and would have a reason for this adaption. With other pokemon who seem to be at the top of the food chain this is slightly harder to pin down. We can probably assume aggron keeps it for defense as it not only needs the integument but also more than that to protect itself. Tyranitar, on the other hand, is likely to be some form of derived aggron species which is now the highest order of consumer in its ecosystem. The stony skin in this case then would be most likely vestigial trait, that is, a trait which has become less and less pronounced over time. Tyranitar could have also benefited from the defense not from predators, but instead the weather. Other pokemon which have metallic shells like bronzong and metagross also would be likely to be related to geodude yet arrived on a similar adaption as aggron to help with defense. Other pokemon with the rock typing are just that type because they either collected these rocks from the environment or are fossilised species.

There have been other rock creatures that have been imagined. "Rock Biter" from "The NeverEnding Story" movies. Tonka even had a toy called Rock Lords, true it was in the late 1980s as a spin-off collection to the Go - Bots & they didn't sell very well, but still it was an interesting idea to me.

Fun fact: Trilobites were also thought to have stone lenses in their eyes (Calcium Carbonite again, too). Generally, Calcium Carbonite in its various of its forms is REALLY common in organic life. Seashells, Corals, Foraminifera, even Chalk is basically the "shells" of nanoplankton that fall to the bottom of the sea after their death and pressure turns them to rock

Hi, Lockstin! Random poetry nerd popping in to inform you that technically, hustle and castle rhyme. They have a masculine rhyme, meaning only the last syllable rhymes. All single-syllable words count as masculine rhymes by default. In this case the "stle" rhymes, but not the first syllable. If they were to rhyme in both syllables, like castle and hassle, that would be a feminine rhyme. (A feminine rhyme being any rhyming pair where the last 2 of more syllables rhyme.) Okay, now I can enjoy the rock types lol

I'm going to be honest here, I think you over through this. There are clearly 2 types of Rock types: -other Pokemon who use rocks as plating and support: Rydon, Rockruff, Dwebble, Tyranitar, and basically all of the fossil pokemon -Golems: Golem, Rosepass, Gigalith, Lunatone, they were clearly made and constructed Pokemon, possibly by some ancient humans long ago who also made the Regis

How do water types work? Do they breathe like our fish? With gills in their nose? Are they holding their breath underwater? Do they always have to be moist? If they use too many water moves, do they die of dehydration?

I'm glad someone else looks at fantasy creatures like pokémon and wonders what they taste like. For example, slime creatures need to be acidic to dissolve their food, and acid always has a sour taste, so slime creatures would be very sour indeed, with any other flavor derived from what it's eaten, so there may be jellied slimes that are fed a bunch of fruit and sugar to sweeten and flavor them, then a little bit is pulled off and used like jam.
