Rocket Candy - How to make your own rocket fuel

A quick tutorial on how to make Rocket Candy (aka R-Candy). There are dozens of different ways to make R-Candy. Having experimented many of them, we have come up with a method that has produced the best results for us. Please feel free to play around with our method to find a recipe that works best for you!
PLEASE NOTE: Cooking utensils used to make rocket fuel are not really suitable for use with food. It's best to just buy a cheap pan and grinder and dedicate them to fuel.
WHERE TO BUY THE INGREDIENTS
In general, almost everything here can be found on eBay, however it is also possible to purchase some of the ingredients locally.
SUCROSE - Table Sugar: This can be purchased just about anywhere.
POTASSIUM NITRATE - Saltpeter or Stump Remover: Potassium Nitrate can be purchased in some hardware stores in the gardening sections. However, it is typically much more cost effective to purchase online. You want to get granulated potassium nitrate (not blocks).
Here: www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=...
Or here: www.clayartcenter.net/~clayar5...
IRON OXIDE: Iron Rust: This one I have not been able to find in local stores. It is possible to make it yourself, but it costs so little online that it's hardly worth the trouble.
Here: www.ebay.com/itm/1-lb-Red-Iron...
HOW TO SET OFF YOUR ROCKET CANDY
You must not use a match or a lighter to light the fuel directly!!!! The fuel burns violently, and will almost certainly burn your hand. Always use fuses or electric igniters.
We purchased our fuse from: www.cannonfuse.com/store/pc/Am...

You shouldn't ever grind up the chemicals together in the coffee grinder as it has a volatile reaction if it combusts. Just do the chemicals separately and then mix them.

The dissolve than heat method is better in my opinion, as it fully mixes the KNO3 and sugar before heating, and the sugar also does not caramelize. First, you mix everything together dry (you don't even have to grind it) and then dissolve it in just enough water. You bring this mixture to a boil until the water is gone it the remaining mixture is creamy.

i was wondering about a few things 1 how much space do you need to launch these rockets do they come to ground in a solid . 2.does this recipe work in much larger quantity's. 3. can i make a large batch and then store it will it last and is it like putty you can mold back into a chamber a week or 2 later?

@MrTelecasterIV
@MrTelecasterIV 8 лет назад
Tip: use water in the pan to disolve the KNO3 and boil it out, also try using a nozzle on the motor it will have a much greater effect, and put the fuse to the top of the motor it will have a much longer burn rate. Nice vid!
@RaptorTech
@RaptorTech 7 лет назад
I've had varied success with the dissolution method, but i like doing it dry because my friends and I can cranks out a 300g batch in 15 min, which means we can make rockets in the afternoon and launch them that day
@MrTelecasterIV
@MrTelecasterIV 7 лет назад
For time purpose dry is the way to go, I only use around 30g batch per motor and leave it to dry for 3 days, so it gets rock solid (and it works very effective). And I also make everything from scratch, cardboard for the tubings, electronic igniters etc... So while the "newmade" batc" is drying I work on the other stuff. Cheers!

Drilling / making a hole in center of rocket motor most of its length gives a faster burn rate = more thrust
@timh.2137
@timh.2137 4 месяца назад
For more power/thrust, plus eliminating the chance of air pockets & normal use (so you can add a second stage and parachute deployment) = after cooking let it cool down into one big rock and grind it back down into powder. I found that this gives my Rockets between 5% to 8% more thrust!

Was there much point of the blender if you're going to melt everything anyway? Or does the sugar just melt and the KNO3 is still solid?
@ArnoldSig
@ArnoldSig 6 лет назад
Will J Yeah exactly, the potassium nitrate does not melt with sugar, it melts in a lot higher temperatures. Therefore with this technique, the grinding is necessary. HOWEVER, if you would dissolve these chemicaldms first into water, the blending or mixing would not be necessary as the dissolving complitely mixes the both ingridients and makes their grain size very minimal... Therefore the dissolving method is very recommended & widely in use.

@@marcferrettiKNO3 is only an oxidizer. It is the same oxidizer used in black powder. If you're so sure about yourself, take a lighter to a keg of black powder. KNSU (Potassium Nitrate/Sugar) will most certainly light with a lighter, especially in the powder stage. Believe it or not, sugar is readily flammable as a powder. You're forgetting heat vs surface area. Sure, a cast grain is tough to light, but the mixed powder is relatively easy. Are you also going to guarantee the coffee grinder is sealed enough to keep the fine powder out of the motor? Are you also going to guarantee that motor won't throw a spark or otherwise get hot enough to heat the powder to ignition heat? The ignition temperature doesn't care what the heat source is. You only need to raise the fuel to ignition temp in the presence of oxygen, in this case an oxidizer. Have you ever heard of a grain silo explosion? Your coffee grinder is just a scale model of one. You can only be lucky for so long, generally only for the rest of your life, however short you make it.

@RaptorTech
@RaptorTech 3 года назад
A 3D printed tamp for packing the fuel sounds like a great idea! Unless you can access a metal printer, a 3D printed nozzle will melt off before you notice a difference in the thrust (I've tried). But more importantly, I'd advise against a 3D printed chamber, as it needs to be able to hold the pressure of combustion. A 3D printed chamber is likely to explode.

I know I am late, however, as an amateur rocketeer, I must leave IMPORTANT DISCLAIMERS: 1. DO NOT BLEND SUGAR AND KNO3 TOGETHER.There is a high likelihood of a reaction occurring, same as if you basically light the engine. Blend them separately and shake and mix them together before cooking. Better should you buy powdered ingredients. 2. IT IS RISKY TO OUTRIGHT COOK THE FUEL ON THE PAN. Again, there is a high likelihood of it reactinh as the oxidezer and fuel are mixed. It is way easier to control the heat imput by having the pan in boiling water. 3. Although not safety related, a nozzle would help. I strongly suggest you add a disclaimer for the first two suggestions as people have had accidents.

Cooking combines the ingredients effectively, the closer the fuel and oxidizer are to each other, the faster the reaction. But the mix should never be heated enough to caramelize it. The process of caramelizing burns part of the carbon in the sugar (hence why it turns brown) and reduces its effectiveness. A temperature controlled element that limits to less than 170(ish) degrees C is best, or use a thermometer. Personally I use a mix of powdered sugar (ground castor sugar, not icing sugar which contains an anti-caking agent) and glucose syrup. Heat the glucose syrup up first, add dry ingredients and stir while keeping temp as close to 170 degrees C as you can
