For these stoves i have found that by filling the chimney loosley with balled up newspaper with layers of twigs in between makes for a great starter. As the newspaper burns it continues to drop ash down and burns down and by time the fire reaches the bottom it has a nice layer of coals and draft. And if desired can even pre load the feed tube to kick off right away.

You should cover the pot to heat it faster, and less wood needed.

Good video, i make rocket stoves myself and have learned that thicker metal is more efficient. I only use 5mm steel for the body of the stove, it dose add a lot more weight to it but makes it more effective. Also adjustable flap on the air box for a slower or faster burn with the feed chamber flap closed, controlling the burn with the air flap works great with a 5mm hot plate fitted for grilling.

I could be wrong as it's hard to see but it looks like the pot holder is too low. When the pot is placed on top it blocks the air from getting out. The stove can't breath properly. If I'm right you should consider raising it an inch or so. Thanks from Australia. Ps. I think your accent is cool.

I love seeing your videos, Jay. They are always informative and entertaining. Keep it up. You remind me so much of Uncle Tommy. Love to all. From Your cousins Terry and Jerry on our sailboat Stargazer, currently in Great Exuma Cay.

Everyone should have one. It’s good for not only camping but at home if the power goes out it’s an extra back up to cook on.

I have one for that very reason. I am also lucky I live in the Mojave desert and can burn creosote branches. The oil in these plants makes the wood burn very hot.

G'day jaybob . 1st time watcher. I usually only boil one cup at a time myself & have never used a rocket stove . But with coffee tin stoves & Dakota fire pits i've dug . I'm get 1x extra large cup boiled in that 5-6mins time frame. Wondering if better sized kindling ( smaller ) would get that fire going hotter & faster . Just my 2 cents mate.

Shouldn't you cover the hole where the sticks go in so the air can only come in the bottom, making it rush in harder, thus making your coals hotter...like a forge?
@oaklawnopry

Yeah DOC you're probably right, thanks for the suggestion.

@@oaklawnopry Thanks for the response! Wasn't trying to point out how you "did it incorrectly" or anything like that....just trying to gain all the information/pointers I can as I want to build one myself! 😎👍

Nice job and all, I like you vid and easy going attitude, and your stove is well made. Respectfully, insulating the burn chamber is where the rocket stoves get their efficiency from. That is a "nominal" rocket stove, not trying to tit for tat or anything. They're basically a draft furnace. Minus the warm up time, they are pushing 8 - 10 times efficient on wood. Boil time, i dunno, but they get scary hot, and errode the still like bbq grill reflectors get after a while. I did enjoy the video.

that's not the problem the bottom has to be half as tall as the top to vent

I believe you just need to control your air supply to cut back on the amount of wood that it burning.

Looks like you should lower/shorten the vertical “chimney” section so the flame can hit the pan bottom more confidently.

I always see people push the starter into the bottom instead of drop into top. Also one should choke the air intake.
