This detour lands me in the northern part of Illinois in the city of Rockford. It sits on the Rock River and has a long history of manufacturing. Today, Rockford is a really depressed place and known in Illinois as being even rougher than the city of Chicago in many ways.
Old warehouses and industry buildings are scattered throughout the city. The best way of describing this place is “Kinda Rough”, but the downtown main street district seems to redeem its otherwise rough nature.
About Rockford:
During the second half of the 19th century, Rockford was known for its production of heavy machinery, hardware and tools. By the 20th century, it was the second leading center of furniture manufacturing in the United States. Today, Rockford is the largest city in Illinois outside of the Chicago metropolitan area.
