In this video I go to one of my favorite spots for sunstone and moonstone, I've been coming back here since i was about 14 years old. I cant wait to go back there this summer to find some more and hopefully find some bigger and better pieces, Thank you all for 300 subs!! 400's right around the corner!!

I have since streak tested and tested the hardness of the metallic mineral, the red-brown streak and hardness being harder than steel indicates hematite. There is still lots for me to learn when it comes to metallic minerals and i am learning as I go. Thank you all for following me on this adventure!!

Gotta get out there while the getting is good. The feldspars always show their best features while they're wet making it the best time to look for them. I cant wait to get back out there this summer and look around some more😁

Nicely done. Yeah, to find the pearlescence you need sunshine. In the Chache La Poudre River in Colorado there is a lot of river tumbled feldspar that shines really nicely, and when it is polished it shimmers incredible. I am assuming that is what you are talking about?
@NWRockExplorer
@NWRockExplorer Год назад
Thanks!! Feldspar can have so many different effects!! The one in particular I'm talking about is adularescence. Basically when you polish it, the high grade pieces can look like they have a separate light source moving around inside the stone. The effect is caused by layers of albite mixing with the orthoclase feldspar. Just regular feldspar has a nice shimmer from cleavage planes and stuff but it doesn't quite compare to moonstone🙂

Finally somebody's talking about sun stones aren't they cool my cousin told me that they are really rare and they cost a lot of money 💰💰🤑
@NWRockExplorer
@NWRockExplorer 2 года назад
They are quite rare but I would say the value really depends on the quality. Sure there are some really expensive sunstones out there but color, clarity, and size is a big part of it too. I'd say only about 1-5% of this material is close to jewelry grade😁

Oh yeah, I *did* check this out already! I agree, what you have is similar to rainbow lattice! So cool!
@NWRockExplorer
@NWRockExplorer 3 года назад
the only difference is that these pieces only have the hematite inclusions rainbow lattice has hematite and magnetite inclusions, the magnetite is what makes the lattice. Maybe if I can find a more mineralized pegmatite there could be rainbow lattice
@thirstfast1025
@thirstfast1025 3 года назад
@@NWRockExplorer I thought the lattice had more to do with the inclusions following multiple planes in the feldspar. Regardless of inclusion constituents, I think you can get that kind of lattice if you have proper feldspars subjected to proper shear forces in the presence of proper remnant magmas. I'd definitly keep exploring the pegmatites. I think we both have leads on areas that could yield some kind of lattice feldspar. Best of luck finding yours!
@NWRockExplorer
@NWRockExplorer 3 года назад
@@thirstfast1025 Thanks!! You're right, it probably could happen. almost every pegmatite in this area contains some pinfire but I just need to find the one that formed under the right conditions.

7:18 that is a good one right there, that is a Moonstone, possibly with some pinfire hematite inclusions. Pretty sure it is a Plagioclase dominant Feldspar, too.
@NWRockExplorer
@NWRockExplorer 2 года назад
Interesting!! yea there's some amount of pinfire in almost any piece of feldspar you pick up in this spot, usually the pinfire in on one axis and the Adularescence is on the other. Rarely they can be on the same axis but I haven't seen any awesome specimens with that orientation🙂
@Nervii_Champion
@Nervii_Champion 2 года назад
@@NWRockExplorer I have found Moonstones that are either Oligoclase or Plagioclase dominant that have chevron shaped growth patterns on the flat perfect cleavage schiller sides that are slightly pink and have pinfire in them from multiple angles. I have found a white clear Moonstone that has schiller on the two imperfect cleavage sides and no schiller on any of the four perfect cleavage sides. Feldspar is so cool and has so much variety, I love it. I even found a flawless grey-purple/blue Moonstone with very strong schiller on two sides that could cut a 6 carat ring stone.

@@Nervii_Champion That's Awesome!! I'm really curious where you're digging, Is it a new find?! I've never seen purple or blue moonstone but it sounds super neat!! @@NWRockExplorer I found all my moonstones and facetable orthoclase in some rock-fill that came from a river somewhere judging by how rounded out and tumbled some of the stones are. They are from the garden in my neighborhood, and I tried asking a few of the landscapers but I can't figure out the source of the stones because no one knows where they got it from.
@Nervii_Champion
@Nervii_Champion 2 года назад
@@NWRockExplorer Also I don't know what makes them black, but I found everything from black to grey to white in there of varying quality. Most of them are brown and opaque though and they still have schiller on the surface but I don't collect the brown opaque ones.

3:15 a streak and hardness test are key there. Moly (molybdenum is the metal, molybdenite is the sulfide) is very soft. I've seen a similar material, but it was ridiculously hard. Turned out to be ilmenite.

This was VERY cool to see! I wish I had more definitive information for you about what's going on to generate that 'pinfire'. I've found it in Ontario as well, though yours is more translucent. Mine is a kind of brownish-pink, and is at best opaque to slightly translucent. Yours is like half way between mine and that transparent Australian rainbow lattice. While I'm not sure for *sure* that the fire is inclusions and not an optical property of antiperthitic feldspar (I'm still waiting on electron microscopy results from samples I submitted to the university here), if they *are* inclusions (which for sure *some* of them are, I've got magnetite in a couple pieces) they may be formed along a 'crystallization front' while the feldspar solidifies, which would explain the inclusions following the orientation of the lattice planes. In my experience, pinfire takes a wonderful polish in the tumbler. What you were finding looked more than competent enough to survive. Just remember, feldspar has cleavage, so it's better to overfill the barrel a little bit than have the pieces falling into each other. Also, I find I get better results using a ham&chis to break it along cleavage planes instead of trying to cut it on the saw. Here's a video of me breaking up a big, broken crystal to tumble ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-i6FurAPpmKo.html Here's a look at some of it polished. You can see the schiller in mine is pure white (any blue is not blue schiller, but actually blue light). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-feZfTogLQbw.html Here's a look at one of may favourite intact crystals of this stuff ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sqvya56UQ6U.html

@NWRockExplorer 3 года назад
Thanks!! These pieces definitely have inclusions because when you put them over a light you can see them inside of the stones, some of them can be almost crystal clear when there is less pinfire but only in small chunks. I think it also looks very close to tanzanian sunstone which also has Hematite inclusions just like the rainbow lattice. Thanks for the tips!! i'll still probably start with tumbling normal k-spar just to make sure I do it right then i'll move onto the sunstone.

Feldspar is far more complicated than most people I see on RU-vid talking about it say it is. Feldspar gemstones can be made up of multiple layers of sub-species of Feldspar. You can have Oligoclase and Plagioclase and Microcline all combined and you get a stronger or weaker schiller effect depending on the layers and the thickness of the different types of Feldspar layers stacked on top of each other. I can go on and on about Feldspars but yeah, I see a lot of misinformation on almost every video where people are talking about Feldspar gems.
@NWRockExplorer
@NWRockExplorer 2 года назад
I really have to step up my game in identifying feldspars, always struggled there!! I like to try and put out good information but I don't always know exactly what I'm looking at. Feel free to correct me on any misinformation or for anything I might not know, honestly it helps me out a lot!!😁

@@NWRockExplorer no problem man, I have been collecting gemstones for 20 years, since I was 5 years old, but I am still wrong sometimes. Gemstones (especially Quartz gems and Feldspar gems) are complicated sometimes so anyone is bound to get something wrong, it doesn't matter how educated you are or how much experience you have. Thanks for the video though, I don't see many videos on Feldspars and most of them don't go into that much depth on the stones or the sub-species/species, so it is good to see new videos on Feldspars
