I return to our favourite camping and rockhounding location to retrieve some beauties that i had left behind, and bring home the biggest rock to date. a beautiful Rhyolite with white chalcedony and carnelian exposed on the surface. Its a rainy camp trip but we bring the ones that got away home.

I was just discussing with a friend that is a geologist about obsessing over a rock I had left at the creek. I went back the next day to get it. I'm glad I'm not the only one. From a Canadian rockhounder thanks for your videos

I didn’t realise how lucky it was until I was editing and realised it was a close call haha! Oh that last bit, I was just looking at it and it’s just beautiful. It's so weird watching you. Where I live there's an area in the desert where the ground is covered in chalcedony. Mainly with agate but I dug out a 5 pound piece stained with iron oxides. Never found rhyolite, though. Keep hunting!
@symonsheppard5519
@symonsheppard5519 5 лет назад
icatz Chalcedony etc is an infill rock formed in cavities, if it is as I suspect , the original host rock was softer than chalcedony and was eroded away that would explain why there are pieces of chalcedony laying around . Most iron stains can be removed by soaking in oxalic acid or any similar domestic product used for descaling.

@@Rookie_Rockounding There is also a significant amount of agate, and, if you're very lucky, fire agate. Of course it's better after a rain. I don't have the equipment to carve or even cut. I enjoy watching you cut. Also, it's brutal desert here, you can only hound for about 4 months of the year unless you like heat stroke. Thanks for the vids.

There was definitely a bit of difference in the gravel bars though and I did find my biggest agate yet 😳😁 We really need the rains out here soon. As obsessed as I am with rockhounding,( and believe me...I am!🤣), my 2 boxers are more to me than I can put into words. My nine year old boy is the love of my life and my husband and my 3 sons are fully aware!! I'm guessing that Bennie belongs to Max? 😁. I can't wait to see the inside of that big guy. When I knew you were going back after it I could hardly wait for this video. I'm equally excited for the next. The next two weeks can't come fast enough. @@symonsheppard5519 Well the, what are the stakes, and how do we determine a winner? 😀😀
@symonsheppard5519
@symonsheppard5519 5 лет назад
Thirst Fast Let Jesse set the stakes and the people decide the winner. Just the fact that stromatolites are only found on the other side of the country (I believe) puts your statement into question.
@thirstfast1025
@thirstfast1025 5 лет назад
@@symonsheppard5519 The *oldest* stromatolites occur in the Pilbara, but there are some in the older sedimentary layers in Qld. I have in fact researched the locations of them, hence my confidence. I also don't accept youtube commenters as an officiator. Something like an examination by a qualified geologist seems like what we'd get a more accurate analysis from.
@g-ology1677
@g-ology1677 5 лет назад
@@symonsheppard5519 I think the layers are too continuously fine to be rhyolite. Rhyolitic eruptions are associated with not only a typically larger scale of clastic material than we see here, but also less consistent, and usually more poorly graded. You wouldn't see so many layers uninterrupted by larger clasts. Much more likely sedimentary in origin. Whether or not it's stromatolitic, closer analysis is needed. 😀 I may be a little biased though...

I like Max, he is cool and friendly, I also like his pet Benny. The piece you said was good as a specimen is very interesting, what caught my eye was the agate at the bottom displaying several types of chalcedony in one rock. I think it was the opal hunters, the rock does look promising for common Opal , parasites should stay in their swamp. The big one ! so you have got a big one eh ! no comment other than you did a commando raid under the cover of darkness without night vision goggles, snake sticks, roo gloves in case of a chance meeting with a boxing kangaroo. That one you dug up needs further inspection and then cutting down into manageable pieces, I normally trim any I get so I can see the pattern and select the best way to cut for exposing the maximum beauty. The one that got away ! for me? I'm honoured. Thank you.
