I think an X100 pedal would be cooler. Seems like Tom had the tones dialed it spot on without needing the extra eq options, plus the chorus and clean settings are dope.

Facebook group not just another rockman forum just released V2 X100 pedal with discrete components. Limited quantities already sold. Echo chip costs $50 and there was limited quantities available. They even got the last ones from Dunlop who bought out SR&D. Soon, V3 surface mount version will be released with more features and adjustments.

I REALLY appreciate that you show us how your initial tone sounds (very basic) so we can see what the pedal actually does. Some RU-vidrs don’t demonstrate pedals bypassed, or start with a fantastic sound to where you can’t tell how effective the pedal actually is

I think the Rockman distortion generator is meant to be used as a DI. The phase button is, IIRC, intended to simulate the notches you get mic'ing a 4x12 cab. But the reason it sounds so nasally when run through an amp x speaker (sim) is because a speaker has its own frequency response which cuts highs and lows. This circuit already has filters in it which are intended to simulate a speaker, so you double up on cutting all the high-frequency and low-frequency information out of the signal. I had some SansAmp stuff back in the 90s that did much the same thing, and sounded honky through an amp. When they built this into a pedal, they should have added a switch to defeat the inbuilt speaker sim so it could be used in front of an amp without it sounding like a kazoo. Cool demo, though! They really nailed the timbre of the distortion circuit.

It may be more user friendly, & more quiet and more modern but to my ears the pedal was just to boosted in the high end spectrum and just to screechingly high compared to the old rack unit that though a bit noisy, sounded way better to me. More dialed in and there were more mids that took the upper end brashness away. Tom Sholtz.is a genius who couldve went on and built moon rockets. Instead he founded Boston instead, playing all the tracks and recruiting Brad Delp to do vocals. If there was a certain sound or effect he needed, he wouldn't shop for it, he'd freaking build it himself. He actually built the bands entire backline which was years ahead of everything made in the 70s, and I read that they still use that same backline today, looking like a damn star trek holodeck control panel.The 1st piece of gear he sold to the public looked deceptively like a Sony walkman, but it was so much more. It was a battery powered, preamp that once you plugged into any clean amp,,you could dial in the amount of distortion, and chorus,, and you could literally nail Sholt's Boston tone. I had that preamp, an early 70s silver face Fender Super reverb amp and a Jackson flying V as my 1st rig which lasted me through to the mid 80s when Boss started making pedals a thing you could make your pedal board with enough pedals to copy any songs you wanted. So began my unending passion for the right pedals which I'm still seeking out to this day, however, I'll always remember having that 1 little, radio sized box, ran through a super reverb amp and being totally satisfied with my tone for at least 5 years and a thousand pedals later, I still can't get right and in a constant tone chase for the right tones, or the next new big thing to make me a satisfied tone chaser.

This is funny, my first practice amp was a Rockman headphone amp! They were pretty big in the 80's for beginners, cheap, decent sounds, headphone jack, portable, great for tossing into a gig bag when your traveling. They really took off after it was discovered Mutt Lange used it as the guitar tone for Def Leppard's 'Hysteria' album, but later on down the line the band encountered problems in the digital realm and they found themselves back in the studio decades later remastering and re-recording the entire album. With a Rockman what you basically have is raw 'pocket amp tone', and to get more out of it in your FX chain, you're more than likely going to find yourself using a Compressor, EQ, & Flanger to get more out of it like Def Leppard found out on 'Hysteria'. But in my own opinion its a cool addition to any pedal board looking for that Def Leppardish tone, but then again with all the software plugins out there, it's not hard to mimic the abilities of the Rockman line of pedals, albeit there are some that make it obsolete. The asking price is a bit of a stretch, as there are more affordable options out there that can pretty much do the same thing as a Rockman.

The old Rockmodules like the Distortion Generator and Sustainor have a direct line circuit built into the output that's made to go direct into a PA or recording console, and you can't turn that off, so that's why so many people don't like the tone of the Rockmodules going into an amp...they weren't made to do that. There's already a cabinet sim going on that you can't turn off, so a cabinet sim into the front of a clean amp is gonna sound weird. (or downright bad) It sounds like the GOAT pedal has that circuit removed and is made to go into a clean amp. I see they just released a version of the Rockmodule Stereo Chorus too. :-)
@rbcarleton
@rbcarleton 2 года назад
The treble boost is used to match the Rockman Distortion Generator, and the GOAT Generator to the treble emphasis of whatever amplification is in use. If it's a guitar amp, you reduce the treble boost. If it's a direct input to the front-of-house, or for recording, you would probably increase the treble boost. The cabinet simulation is always active, but you can use the treble boost get a better match. After that you use the EQ section to fine tune the sound.

Great video my man! But I am commenting just because I was left wanting a bit more! For a bunch of us, because of our age, the Rockman sound is what we hear on Def Leppard's Hysteria, which you did a great video on already, and some Surfing with the Alien type tones. Do another video with this pedal and add the chorus and echo thing with other pedals and see how close you can get to the various Hysteria distortion tones. That would cinch it for me, and possibly many of us! Why hasn't a builder in the US done their version of this here?!?! Thanks, brother! Great content as always!

I love my GOAT. I like picking an extreme setting for a lead track & then-more or less-reversing all the controls for a rhythm sound. It would probably be easy to dial in a comparable sound with other gear, but as a Rockman fan, I had to have the GOAT. 🙂 Like someone else said, I’d really like to see someone make an X100 pedal. And it is criminal that Dunlop isn’t doing anything good with the brand.

I had a full rack of the Rockman stuff and ran direct to the PA. A long time ago. From what I remember, the phase notching was supposed to make it sound more like the phase cancellation of a 4x12 speaker cab. Running direct without any amp, it worked great. I also remember using the sustainor as a distortion into a Marshall combo with one 12 inch speaker, and the phase notch made that sound more like a closed back cab. Very cool!

All the original rockman gear was designed for full range amplification. Not designed to run into front end of clean amp. That's why it can seem bright through guitar amp. The auto clean was designed to allow distortion to clean up without losing volume/highs with volume on guitar.

I was tempted to purchase one of these leading into the Pandemic. I lost my interest when I discovered that it (supposedly) came close to emulating the tone of the Rockman. I’ve discovered after having owned an X100 that the Boston tone I would choose to emulate isn’t what Tom generated either on the debut or *Third Stage* and its successors. My wish is to emulate Tom’s (and Barry’s) tone from the *Don’t Look Back* sessions. To me subjectively, that is the single-most desirable Boston guitar tone to seek to emulate. Tom had arrived at the sound he desired, and it still sounded raw and in your face. The cool thing is, this pedal appears to hit that mark, something which I didn’t realize at first. I could also imagine it being snapped up by Billy Gibbons, Brian May, Neal Schon, Hal Bachman or Jeff Beck. The best part of it is if you’ve got killer chops like you have, RJ.

When I was a kid and got my first guitar, I didn't have an amp, but my dad's RCA stereo had a 1/4" input and I would plug my guitar into there. This pedal reminds of that. I mean the RCA didn't gain up like this from what I remember, but it definitely distorted from the guitar signal slamming it, and this pedal reminds me of that experience.

To me the Rockman sound has the chorus and echo as well as the clean switches. This thing sounds pretty good to my ears though, considering it's not actually going after the Rockman sound itself. FOrget that phase switch in most cases. Too thin. I think this thing sounds best with mids and 2K dimed, no phase switch treble at noon or slightly lower, bass noon or a little higher, Harmonics on heavy. That captures the Rockman distortion best to me. The lead switch works well in that mode too. I wish someone would make an actual clone of a Rockman with all the bells and whistles, but in a pedal format. It's a unique and cool tone. Good demo!

What's the Steel String Singer clone in the back? Is that one of those 25W SSS's? I'd LOVE to get/build one. I built a 100W Ceriatone SSS several years for someone who didn't want to wait for them to build it. It is my favorite clean amp, but really impractical. I built a 50W for myself, but even that was punishingly loud, way too loud, I can't even begin to think about how loud SRV's 150W was. The problem with Dumble circuits is that most of them are even more dependent on the master volume being at the sweet spot than most tube amps, or they get too saggy in the low end and don't respond the same way, and with D's that volume is usually high. I never use power scaling, I don't like the way it affects the tone and attack (with the exception of the ones Marshall uses in their Studio series, they're perfect). I used to slave the SSS into the power section of an Egnater Rebel 30 set to 6V6s, or a 15W Tweaker that I swiped the stock 6V6s for 6L6s*. It certainly made it more usable, but it lacked the thump that it's own output section produces. A 25W that's designed correctly and compensates for the lower power would be great, I wish Ceriatone would do it, or even a SSS tube driven preamp pedal like the Peace FX. I know these don't get the love they did a decade ago, but they're still IMO the best pedal platform amps out there, especially at that price: you can find a 15W head used for $250 and the fact that you can use any power tubes makes it perfect to use with preamp pedals, modeling units, etc. The same with the rebels: being able to switch between 6V6 and EL84s, and go from 20 or 30W down to 1 helps. For the life of me I don't understand why Bruce Egnater hasn't released a standalone power amp built off the Rebel's circuit. A 20 or 30W head that you can switch between different power tubes in the fly and cut down to 1W, sell them for $400-500 and you wouldn't be able to keep up with demand. Who out there that uses Preamps wouldn't want something like that? Fuck it, I'll just do it myself.

R.J. I have a Question. for you. I went to SPOTIFY to check You out. Would you say tat is an accurate representation of your recorded Work to Date. And the reason I say this is that even though I am a Big Fan of Surf Music, that's all I hear. But when I hear You in Demos it seems as if You can Play anything.

Add some 300ms echo and some chorus/detune and you got it.

Doesn't seem that noisy. Are you using a gate?

Great review. You covered a lot of ground. That said, to my ears both sound very brittle.

Bummer - I watched RJ's demo of the Rockman X100 right before this, then went to this vid hoping and praying that this pedal would sound just as good. The X100 sounds amazing. While the GOAT has much better functionality and a more usable layout for today's gigging guitarist, the sound is not even close to as good as the original Rockman, IMO.

I bought one of these. It sounds great but the noise it generates is crazy especially when you turn the sustain up on it. Be prepared to gate the hell out of the pedal or if your recording cutting and removing all the resting parts of your playing.
