The DS-1 is a great pedal. I haven't used one in quite some time, but I played one on many gigs. Another tip about this pedal is that it really shines with the level on full. Sort of like the idea that an amp in the 70s needed to be turned up all the way for the best tone, this pedal works really well that way also. It actually makes for a really good overdrive with the level full and the gain between 9:00 and noon.
@PatPosse
@PatPosse Год назад
Oh yeah! Like pushing a tube amp into overdrive. I live doing that with the Ts9 but the DS1 also does that very well. Especially if your amp is tube driven. Great advice there !

I'm not a performance-level player, just a basement guy, so there will never be a lot of high-end stuff in my rig. That said, DS-1 sits on my pedal board right after the classic green Ibanez overdrive, and I rarely use a lot of settings on the amp itself. When I built the board, I played with the order of those 2 pedals a lot, and my tastes settled on feeding OD into DS vs. the other way around. Maybe I'll swap them again with this in mind, but again, it's just for my ears most of the time so ultimately it's what this audience of 1 likes to hear. Good info though - you've got a fun delivery combined with interesting content!

I think i still have it but it's in storage because I haven't seen it in about a decade. @@PatPosse yeah it works on everything from green day to scorpions to Ted nugent, etc. It's certainly a universal pedal when it come to sounds it can make. I've always thought of it as one of the better effects pedals. I also have a blue overdrive pedal by the same brand. My only problem now is that both my electric guitars don't work and I know next to nothing about soldering or replacing switches..even more diagnosing the issue. Both of them have no output to my Amp..one the selector switch is the issue and one I think the input jack is the issue. Dude I played every single day from when my parents got me my first electric guitar and Amp kit which was a peavey system to just after my dad died in 2009. I have been homeless since but now I got my ssdi and I still haven't got either of them repaired. I just dunno if I can trust local music shops in my area to do quality repairs. I agree in principle that it works best to push natural gain from the amp. But I don't agree that it sounds terrible over a clean channel. Not all music needs to chug. The tone you dialed up sounded great to me. Perfect for something like the Cars, Skynryd, etc.

I could agree with your research (for sure) because I could hear it. But I found that my DS-1 from around 1991, sounded great paired with a clean channel on a tube Fender Vibrolux Reverb 40w with 2x10’s. I mean it was a classic rock beast of a sound! (Stones, AC/DC, Aerosmith = pricing fully vested). But to get metal sounds, it needed a Marshall JCM800 head or combo paired with an attenuator, so you could crank the amp and cut the volume (but still get the natural overdrive) and beef that overdrive with the DS-1. But let’s be honest here: If you’re dropping that much cash on gear, I hope you are booking some major shows to stack some cash. Because the average bear is better off leaving the amps at the store and playing through a MacBook Air with GarageBand for free. Just my two-cents. Rock On 🎸🔥👍

VERY helpful info on how to use the Boss Distortion pedal. Like most players, I tried it on a clean amp and could not get a good tone. Even tried using the Boss EQ with it which didn't work either. Now I understand why. The pedal PUSHES the distortion already present in the amp. It doesn't provide it on it's own. Great video! Thumbs up!

The DS-1 is definitely good for pushing tube amps but I want to disagree and say that judicious tone control usage can make it quite useful into a clean amp. The other factor not addressed here is that within a mix a DS-1 can be a different beast. What sounds harsh and trebly alone often cuts better. JCM800s are horrible by themselves but they cut through a mix. Will the DS-1 metal with huge bass? Nope, but then the Metal Zone, which is bedroom metal for days, sucks in a mix. Horses for courses.
@FreeIndeed72
@FreeIndeed72 10 дней назад
The DS-1 is great for a fuzz pedal and tone stacking. It'll also do great for Black Sabbath and AC/DC sort of sounds. It's also great for punk rock and fuzzy garage/surf tones. Modern metal? Nah, get another pedal.

I run this pedal after my Boss Blues Driver, which I use on the clean channel of my Laney amp. I have the tone and the distortion set at 8 o'clock and the level just past 1 o'clock on the DS1, the Blues Driver has the level and gain set at 10 o'clock and the tone at 1 o'clock. My Schecter screams like crazy when I run both for leads. A slight subtle boost from the DS1 makes a huge difference. I hear people calling the DS1 a noisy pedal. It can be if you dial in too much distortion or gain. A little goes a long way with the DS1 😁🎸

The distortion sounds I hear on classic rock, and what I buy are different. Never found a amp, or pedal that works. Late 70s rock is the hardest to find.
@PatPosse
@PatPosse 6 дней назад
That is because in the 70s records there was a lot more on the post production side of things. Lots of room, mic’ing and tape saturation, plus tubes galore ! All of that influenced the sound of the decade. Once the 80s hit, everything became more digital and automated. Less experimenting and more cookie cutter. It all went downhill from there…

My way of doing it: Buy a cheap and shitty amp.(mine is MS-2) Max your volume on your guitar(yeah, guitar, not on amp) And then turn distortion on like 1-5 o' clock and tone like 9-11 o' clock You can also turn your overdrive on your amp and put it all inside a piano with pushed piano reverb pedal and you will get a minimal required tone to be considered heavy metal

I think they are, as a whole just stock pedals with very basic standard sounds. After playing through onboard distortion and od on a Carlsbro and Marshall amp in the early 90s, the boss ds1 was sub par, and didn't come close to cutting it. My first distortion pedal was the hardwire TL2 by Harman, and that makes a mockery of the ds1🤘

Thinking about this a bit more, you set this up using crunch channel on your amp. Assuming you've got an amp that does clean/crunch/lead you shouldn't need a distortion pedal, you could just switch to the lead channel... although it might be a subtly different tone, level of drive etc, like clean/crunch/lead/aarrgh!

Sometimes the lead channel needs a little compression and a bit more umph. That’s where the DS1 comes in 💪🏻
@BeachCat
@BeachCat 12 дней назад
As a matter of fact the DS-1 IS designed to get you distortion on its own. It is not simply a booster pedal that just gives you more of what you have. Neither is a tube screamer. The DS-1 is a hard clipping distortion circuit, and a tube screamer is a soft clipping distortion circuit that is famous for boosting mids. It does sound better in an already slightly distorted amp compared to a clean one, but it does, like any other distortion pedal, create its own distortion by clipping the signal.
@KRAZEEIZATION
@KRAZEEIZATION 2 года назад
I don’t think it’s misunderstood, it’s only a distortion but a very good one for the price. I bought one in 1990 but retired it in 1994 when I bought the DS-2. I still have my original DS-1, I had a MIJ which I sold, and I bought the 40th Black just to have it but I don’t use it. I’m not too fond of it though, it’s too buzzy, and very generic sounding. I have 2 DS-1s... one is stock and the other I installed the Keely ultra seeing-eye mod. They both sound great if used like you describe! Mine go into a dirty Marshall with fantastic results. I also use a EQD Plumes overdrive (TS type circuit) and a Big Muff in the same way. They all need an amp tone with some dirt before the magic comes out... Also, stacking the DS-1 with Overdrives can work well too! Pair it with a Behringer TO800 and you have a powerful combination that cost you less than $60!

Seems like it might be better used as for preamp or FX loop tone colouring, as opposed as a straight up distortion pedal. I'm using a comp/boost, a cheap MOSFET od pedal, and 2 cheap fuzz pedals for the same purpose, but with way more versatility. Still unconvinced the ds1 any chop at all, if one falls in my lap I'll give it another go though🤘😎

I don't agree with DS-1 being people's first pedal. DOD Carcosa owner here. ;) PS. Many people buy DS-1 probably not because of metal, but... Nirvana. But Nevermind me. PS.S. DS-1 sounds awesome on clean channel. On Boss Katana amp. Hahaha. They've made a lot of good work with it. I don't buy digital distortion sounds, as I pick on things most people can't hear or noticef (digital distortion gravel is irritating), but this one sounds good. I haven't found yet a single one distortion sim, beside's Katanas DS-1 to sound good at all.

On the early Grave albums (that's a band, and from Sweden), the very limited information indicates they used this pedal through a Fender Bassman for the guitar tone. For the record? That's a death metal band. Everyone assumed they used the typical HM2 (chainsaw) for the tone, and it's not the case. Yeah - it's got a lot of potential when it's strengths are focused on.

I don’t remember exactly why I bought this pedal but I think it was because it was cheap. I didn’t like it at 1st and yes i tried to use it on a clean channel. I still find it a bit buzzy and harsh the way I would run it normally even as a stacking overdrive so I use it for my practice rig with the Peavy Vyper Classic setting for overdrive when I need more compression. I set the tone to 10 oclock and the distortion at 0. It sounds pretty good that way when I need it For my main pedalboard I use a Boss OD1X to further boost an MXR Timmy

Many people do not realize that this pedal sounds excellent BUT with the TONE at 9 o'clock or maximum at 10 o'clock, it is as if it were another pedal, TRY IT AND YOU WILL NOT REGRET! I do NOT recommend using it at 12 o'clock and even worse, more than 12 o'clock, because it gives too bright or high frequencies, which makes it lose midrange, causes discomfort and the sound quality is lost.

One day I’ll have all the overdrive and distortion pedals! The DS-1 seems to be a pedal designed with a purpose, to cut through a loud band, so it’s designed to sound good in a mix and maybe not so much by yourself in the basement. I feel like a lot of today’s gear is designed to make a good solo tone and so guitarists struggle to blend in the ensemble after they’ve nailed the perfect tone. 70s and 80s pedals were built for a cranked amp on a stage
@PatPosse
@PatPosse 19 дней назад
There's a great point on that! Most new gear (and plugins) are designed to sound great by themselves and not in a band situation... Maybe due to the fact that most musicians are playing music by themselves and writing and recording it themselves as supposed to writing in a band context and practicing together, learning from each other on a loud environment... It's sad really but it's also WAY less complicated to work by one's self... I do it too most of the time but playing and jamming with other people is the best!!

So true. It can be the worst or best sounding distortion pedal, depending on many other things, primarily your amp., but lower output pickups can help too. Also keep in mind the pedal volume level effects tone. Too low and distortion high tends to not sound so great. Also, in my opinion anyway, the new Waza Craft version sounds good in the clean channel. Of course, it's not as beefy but it doesn't sound so thin and brittle like classic version. And of course, it sounds ULTRA beefy in the dirt channel.

I've never owned that pedal, but for only $20, I'd buy it just to have it. My pedal set is mostly BOSS, but they go like this: MT-2, CT-3, ST-2, AC-3, NS-2, CH-2, and BD-2. For those of you who don't speak Boss Pedal, the list looks like this: Metal Zone, Chromatic Tuner, Power Stack, Acoustic Simulator, Noise Supressor, Chorus, and Blues Driver. I also have a really cheap diode clipper distortion pedal that's cheap as shit and sounds just as buzzy and harsh as I'm describing it. I don't use ANY of these pedals. My go-to amp right now is my 2012 Fender Mustang V half-stack. Built-in effects, built-in tuner, 12 amp models, 13 cabinet/speaker models, tons of personality, tons of volume at 75-watts per side (Stereo), 150-watts total. People can say what they think about modelling amps, but I promise you none of them ever actually cranked this half-stack.

The DS-1 was my second pedal, after an HM-2. I've always preferred the sound of the HM-2, but I found that the DS-1 worked great for just about every kind of rock/metal provided I dialed in the right settings. You just don't get that amount of versatility out of most distortion pedals. Try using a Metal Zone to play AC DC and see how that goes.

You're just using it as an overdrive pedal. Why not just get an overdrive pedal then. Anyway, I had one of the 1st ones back in the early '80s. It sounded different than the later models. Noticeably better. You could plug it in the normal channel of a solid state and get the best it has to offer. I switched to an Arion SDI-1 Distortion in 1985. Still have one today. It's kinda like the Boss, but better. A wider range of distortion and tone. Not as brittle sounding. More rich sounding. Look up "Arion SDI-1 Distortion" on youtube. There are comparison videos of it and the Boss. You'll see how much better it is.
