Agave albopilosa is the prize observation in this episode. This fabulous bastard is remarkable for being the only species of Agave with tufts of white hairs on the ends of the leaf blades. It is known only from 5 or 6 populations in the world where it grows directly out of limestone rock walls, hundreds of feet above the floor of the canyon.
We also get into a brief description of the geologic setting here, and how this incredible mountain range came into being. Without this very specific geologic setting and the habitat it creates, plants like Agave albopilosa would not exist. Once again we see how geology directly affects plant evolution. Como se dice "fold thrust belt"?
Your contributions support this content. It sounds clichéd, but it's true. Whether it's travel expenses, vehicle repair, or medical costs for urushiol poisoning (or rockfalls, beestings, hand slices, toxic sap, etc), your financial support allows this content to continue so the beauty of Earth's flora can be made accessible to the rest of us in the degenerate public. At a time when so much is disappearing beneath the human footprint, CPBBD is willing to do whatever it takes to document these plant species and the ecological communities they are a part of before they're gone for good.
Plants make people feel good. Plants quell homicidal (and suicidal!) thoughts. To support Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't, consider donating a few bucks to the venmo account "societyishell" or the PayPal account email crimepaysbutbotanydoesnt@gmail.com...
Or consider becoming a patreon supporter @ :

I lived there, and my family still lives in the Huasteca, Santa Catarina Nuevo Leon ,Mexico. Many years ago, we used to hike and spend time over there. Mind you is our "backyard", we enjoyed an arroyo with waters so cool and clean, monarchs used to rooster in the Cañon, beautiful times, yes climate change is real. I visited twice a year, and of course, we always visited our old friends, Cerro del Frijolillo,la Raya, el Agujero, Casa del Dr. Pequeño,el interior de la Husteca, where is the Presa el Cuchillo Courtian , I always go and touch the walls to say hi, I'm still here, glad that you are too.

Agave bracteosa, v-r, and alboprolifera are all super tough plants that remind of animals on the coral reef … which once shared the substrate with them. One weird and relatively closely related plant that evokes alboprolifera (in my mind) is Leuchtenbergia principia … Not every feature is adaptive. Sometimes what you see is just what’s being left behind.

Not sure how long you been doing it but it does take time, a lot of time for some of us… Being interested in the plants helps a lot, trying to learn about that plant, what makes it unique and why it was given that name. For me, learning the meaning of the Latin helps me a lot! Not always but often they name them descriptively. Albo-white Pilos- hair So agave albopilosum (sp?) is the white haired agave. I’m in the east, I can’t name very many plants in Latin here, we just have so many… but thanks to learning some Latin I can tell you, from memory that Mayapples Latin name is Podophyllum peltatum Podo-foot Phylum-plant Pelta- is a small shield So they are foot plants with sheilds, sheild bearing foot plants? I’m not sure but the leaf does look like a shield i guess, and the root definitely looks like a foot… Good luck
