Couple of little lessons about this - Firstly, regarding the passing of Archie. Normally, in Aboriginal culture, after someone dies, it is respectful not to speak their name. But in the case of Archie, like Gurrumul before him, his family have given permission for his name & image to be used, so that his legacy of story-telling & music can live on, & continue to educate us. This song is a very important lesson about a big moment in Australian history, and an important man, Vincent Lingiari, (search Wave Hill walkoff for more info) that led to land rights being recognised for First Nation Australians, an important step on the road towards reconciliation for the horrendous treatment of the original inhabitants of Australia.
I gotta add here: Let's no forget that this was CO-written by Paul Kelly, he wrote this with Kev Carmody while they were out bush camping, sitting around a campfire, and they wrote the thing in one night.
Archie will forever live on in his music. Paul Kelly co-wrote this song with Kev Carmody, who is not only the greatest indigenous songwriter in Australia, but the greatest songwriter full stop. Any track is gold, but these are a great start, 'Thou Shalt Not Steal' , 'Droving Woman' and 'Eulogy for a Black Man'.
The Guy you thought was Ron Jeremy is Australian singer Richard Clapton. If I could pick one song of his for you to react to it would be Girls on the Avenue
Believe it or not Jimmy Barnes has done some back up singing with Richard Clapton….blows my mind. @thatsingerreactions have actually seen him before when you reacted to Knocking on Heavens Door with Jimmy Barnes and co… RIP to Archie Roach. He has also sung with Jimmy Barnes too, with a song called We could be Gone. Nice reaction Nick. Loved Rockwiz. Stayed up late to watch on SBS TV channel. The show came to Regional Western Australia so I have seen it live too. Wish it would make a return with new episodes soon.
Great reaction. RIP Archie Roach, what a voice, & what a communicative presence. We’ve been blessed with his music & his writing, his art. A children’s book was made using the lyrics of “From Little Thjngs Big Things Grow” accompanied with beautiful Indigenous art. When I was a Primary (Elementary) teacher, I’d use the book & the class would learn the song & we’d all be inspired by the art in the book. Australia will miss Archie Roach & cherish his unique legacy (& nurture our Paul Kelly canon of works, too).
I live in the Electorate of Lingiari, few months ago worked on Campaign to Elect 2 Indigenous Women for the 2 Seats here for Federal Govt, they both won, there were 2 other seats in the NT in Darwin an Indigenous woman won one of those, 33% of the NT Population is Indigenous so we now over represent, Labor Party had 3 other Indigenous Candidates who won seats. From little things big things really have grown, it does not seem like it to the young and those in the South East Urban Areas, but here in the Bush since that song was written and they filmed it here changes have been huge, If all goes well with Referendum, things will be changed in Constitution, so Conservatives will not be able to stop start progress, every time they are in office,
Thanks for doing my request Nic!! RIP to Archie Roach. The song is based on real events! You are right, the whole world can learn ‘from little things big things grow’. I do love Uncle Archie & Emma singing the last bit about Aboriginal People knowing where they stand when they stand in the LORE - Aboriginal right ways to do business. 🖤💛❤️ You have reacted to Electric Fields version of this song. Both are special in different ways.
RIP Archie Roach, Thank you Nick much respect and love. Some more of him please he was a wonderful artist who broke through genres, classes and races with his music.
Rockwiz is a show on a non commercial tv station. The Australian government funds two independent tv stations to ensure Australian and independent content will always remain on tv. It’s why you see these live one off collaborations between artists from different labels that are made to entertain the audience not to make money and the passion in these performances shines through- same thing for like a version which is done for a government funded radio station.
Love all of Paul Kelly's songs. They always have a special message. I come from Warrnambool. Most of Archie's family come from around here. He was so well respected by all Australians. Hope one day you can come meet some of our awesome singers/song writers/bands💜💜💜
Brother, that whole Rockwiz playlist has held some of the best “Sunday Sippers Sessions” by the pool, in this lil Aussie sisters backyard, for many years now. Honestly feels like I’m in me own little beer garden, out the back of a little pub with all kinds of artists performing. It also helped renovate my old house to sell. Thankyou Rockwiz 🤙🏽
I'm sure once the pandemi is over, you can come over to Australia to visit and do a music tour and review artists & I'm sure RockWhiz would love to have you on a special
As an Aussie I can say we live in a beautiful country with strong passionate people. Having you listen to storytelling of our Aboriginal history is wonderful. We have incredible performers and you have been showcasing them well.
Such a wonderful song. Gets me every time. There’s a number of versions out there with the great Paul Kelly being accompanied by some wonderful musicians. He truly is a master story teller.

I was driving with my grandson the other day in the car. I had this on disc . I was shocked when he asked what the song was about. i said i don't understand what do you mean by what this about. I asked didn't you learn any thing about Australians indigenous people at school. I was actually shocked and disgusted at the school system. When i was a child at school my family moved around a lot. So many schools i went to taught about Australia's first people and the culture. Its disgusting to think we don't any more. So much history gets lost. Port Augusta in south Australia have a centre called the the Wadlata outback centre its an amazing place to visit.
The then Prime Minister of Australia, Gough Whitlam in the 1970's poured the soil through his hand in a solemn ceremony that returned the land to his people, in a way that was respectful of deeply ancient custom. It was a historic moment in modern Australian history.
When u commented on Richard Clapton looking like Ron Jeremy I laughed & said said s'thing about how would u even know Ron Jeremy. Hubby looked @ me unimpressed & said " well how do YOU know Ron Jeremy?!?
I wish the Koori singers would focus on our peoples struggles today and right now, like Family violence Indigenous females and males were 35 and 22 times as likely to be hospitalised due to family violence-related assaults as other Australian females and males, rape is also higher , there is so much work that needs to be done, sadly our talent is wasted on what happened 200 years ago :/ we will get no where whilst our children and women suffer today.
I understand your point but there are many amongst us that we're stolen children. They still suffer today. We have to keep them in our minds and let them know that we love them and suffer alongside them. It wasn't 200 years ago it was 30, 50, 100 years ago.
@@Mrmikey0909 My grandfather was stolen and put into a Catholic orphanage in Picton NSW , over the years he escaped after third attempt and worked as a farm hand until he was old enough to sign up for WW2, He said when the orphanage children got walked to school they were told if they talked to a child not in the orphanage they were fed bread and water for a week. Hell knows what other abuse happened he would not talk about. Of course we should never forget our past and the injustices and we won't, I just feel people need help yesterday but the focus is way off on the Koori struggles.
Check out Briggs and bad apples label, A.B.Origional, Baarka, Doby, more and more. Most you will find in rap, hip hop and indigenous record labels. Also many of the emerging artists, There is a rabbit hole that looks at exactly what you spoke about. And the music is really good.
Always was, always will be Aboriginal Land. Australia and the British Colonial original sin was "Terra Nullius", the denial of the presence of First Australians in this land for 60,000+ years.
You covered you covered this song 6 months ago. Jessica Mauboy, John Butler, Missy Higgins and Electric Fields we're the collaborating artists on that version!
you should watch Paul Kelly interviews about his heroin use etc, he is so open and honest about himself, plus he often goes into importance or inspirations behind his works
