I love the way Rocky runs after Mickey. How many of us wish we had run after the one who walked away? Too much pride, perhaps, but I know so many of us regret not having run out to say we're sorry.
They both manned up. I bet it took a whole lot for Mick to get up and go to rocky's house just like it took a lot out of rocky to go outside for Mick after his outburst.
yep he just told him a week ago he was a never was bum .. and now he's gotta burry his pride and ask him for for the pay day ... because lets be real that's what it was really about .. rocky was getting a pay day and mick wanted in ..
This scene always brings tears to my eyes because you can feel Rockys pain and emotion. He felt slightly abandoned by Mickey and now that he has leverage, he wants Mickey to know he feels hurt and at the same time, still loves him like a father. This reminds me a lot of my own family.
Tearing up right now. Most emotional powerful moment of the entire series IMO. A man at the depths of his depression and anger and fear and hatred and sadness
When I was in my late teens I used to recite this film wird for word with a friend at my dads works I used to drive my dad up the wall ...I'm 55 in a few weeks and the film is as good today as it ever was ...its poetry.funny..emotional it's got all the I ingredients .the music as simplistic as it is is so magical goes hand in hand ..the best rocky movie of the lot by far ...aye yo x
I wonder if the darts on the door have a deeper meaning. If you'll notice there isn't a target on the door. Maybe they symbolize how Rocky has the tools to be successful, but he doesn't know where the target is and needs some guidance, because right now he's throwing darts aimlessly.
Actually, that wasn't in the script originally. Burgess Meredith was so emotionally invested and deep in the zone as Mick at that point that he nearly forgot Mick's hat, messing up the scene a bit. Reacts in character, shuts the door, and retrieves it. Stallone comes out thinking its his cue, sees Mick still there, reacts in character, and goes back into the bathroom. Stallone felt it was so natural that he kept that take in instead of use another take.
I don't think that a man with Rocky's virtues exists. Here is a man who cannot return bad deed with bad deed, remains in love and hot for his wife and lives in pain years after her death, is loyal and kind to Paulie in spite of terrible attitude. Great movie.
leftstriker We see some of his faults in the next movie. There are men kind like this. And he is kind to a fault- recall the scene where he can't properly enforce for that loan shark he works for.
What bad deeds? Was it a bad deed that Mickey didn't act like Rocky's mother? Rocky tried to attack Clubber at a public appearance, and he wanted a rematch with Creed because of Creed's mocking. That's not turning the other cheek.
What a scene. You feel the hatred and animosity between Rock and Mick. But you also know deep down they love each other. Emotions boiled over. But Rock knows Mick is there for him. This brings a tear to my eyes. The emotion is so real here. And Walt Conti's simple music. I think people recognize it in other areas of their lives. It resonates. The person you've never acknowledged.
***** I think they love each other. Because when Mick leaves Rock says.. "About time!!" that shows he still cares. The scene in the gym when Mick gives him a piece of his mind is great too. "I WANNA KNOW!!".. "You don't wanna know". Wonderful film. I cry at the end almost every time. In fact I don't even really call this a boxing movie. Its really more a love story that happens to have boxing in it.
***** Actually I always liked Gazzo. Even though he's a Goodfella and mobster. He's nice to Rock. Gives him some money to have fun. When he's in the crowd at the fight and yells "Go Rock" you know he's with him all the way. Its a wonderful film and beautifully played by all. Its not just about boxing it can apply to anything in life you're trying for. Agree with all you said.
It's funny when, in the beginning, Gazzo criticizes Rocky for being too soft and not breaking a man's thumb when they didn't have the money to pay off their debt. Then Gazzo gives Rocky money to have fun with Adrian, cheers for him at ringside and generally treats him well.
@@roquefortfiles I remember talking about the Rocky films to people who would respond with " I can't stand boxing films". I would laugh at them and tell them exactly the same as what you've said. The Rocky films are about life, not boxing.
This is such a brilliant screenplay. I love how Mickey opens and closes the door when he forgets his hat: Rocky comes out thinking Mickey left and they have an almost comically awkward moment. Rocky's outburst while Mickey goes downstairs is so powerful. The decision to linger on something so bitter for almost a minute seems to make it harder and harder to watch. The very end is interesting because the scene doesn't really work without the music. If you were to remove the music when Rocky runs out, the scene would make me assume that Rocky was going to assault a poor old man. Instead, the piano score comes in at just the right moment to give the scene the proper context. If you look at Mickey's body language as Rocky runs towards him, he even looks a bit scared. This scene will always move me, and it works really well even if you don't know the history between them. The scene is like a perfect short film with a clear beginning, middle, and end.
I think about my late father every time I see this clip. We had it out when I was about 23...I told him every honest thing about himself and how absent he was. But when it was done...I still loved him. Only time I ever saw my father cry was when I berated him, but we reconciled and had 6 1/2 wonderful years before he died. Time has a way of healing if you have forgiveness in your heart. Rocky is a movie that has SO many lessons...that's why it endures so well.
Trivia: The monologue which Rocky delivers after turning down Mickey's (Burgess Meredith) offer to manage him was completely improvised on-set by Sylvester Stallone. He has since explained that he was heavily influenced by the fact that the bathroom of the tiny apartment in which they were shooting really did stink.
One of, if not THE, finest acted scenes in movie history. Simple as that really. In every way, flawless. Meredith never, ever lets himself down in any of the Rocky movies and its the zenith of Stallone's career...if only he was like this in every movie he was in...we'd be talking about him in the same breath as De Niro, he's that good in this film, and especially this scene.
Wow I never herd it put that way but I gotta say I think your rght on the money...You never think of Stallone in the same category as Dinero, Pachino or Pesci but maybe we would be if he made different decisions in his career
Stallone chose the sequel and action hero route the first rocky and rambo are absolute classics and are up there with taxi driver and the godfather in my opinion this scene and rambos breakdown scene in first blood are examples of what a fine actor stallone is but all the sequels whilst also great were unnecessary, pacino and deniro did individual stories for every movie whils stallone took the sequel and action hero route and that’s the reason why he’s not mentioned in there category
This is my favourite Stallone scene, here, he projected the frustration of a poor man living in the ghetto knowing that he can do so much more, but he's against the ropes of life! I love Stallone for making this scene, the way he captures and expresses all of the emotion that Rockys character was feeling was like, deep down Rocky Is actually Stallone saying I'm better than what everybody thinks I am but they just haven't given me a chance to prove my self and all they see in me is the shitty place that I come from! God bless Stallone for this scene man!!
Nick Hepler I don’t know anything about that area so I’m guessing you mean it isn’t safe? If so, some areas that aren’t safe use to have a little code of honor and one of them was don’t violate elders. Not sure it that’s true there or anymore.
Rocky just had to vent. It was pent up anger from years of frustration over how he felt Mick was treating him. But deep down, he knew Mick always wanted what is best for him and that Rocky was responsible for own his lot in life.
Maverick4023 I agree 1000 percent. I understand you perfectly WESKER and it's more poignant that you make the effort to convey your feeling in a foreign language. Well said
The part where Rocky is yelling always cracked me up as a kid. But as an adult it breaks my heart. Because i feel i can relate to that scene in some way.
Gut wrenching and beautiful. Rocky finally gets the approval and help he wants from Mickey but before that he wants Mickey to feel his pain and humiliation.
Its been so many years since this movie was made, and so many times I have watched it. But every time I watch this scene its the same. The tears flow from my eyes. It gets me every time. Yo, Rocky!
This scene was so emotional because it reminds me about my family and others in the northeastern part of the U.S. Guys suck at communicating feelings and when you unload them like Rocky did, it gets very intense and emotional.
I love how Mickey gets to the door and touches his head as if remembering that he came in with a hat on, and how dejected he looked. The brilliance of Burgess Meredith.
One of the best scenes in a completely fantastic film. The bit where the piano version of the theme kicks in as Rocky chases Mick down the street gets me every time.
And so the legendary friendship between Mick and Rocky begins just near the end of this scene. I love the simplicity of this scene (and the whole movie for that matter). I particularly like how Sly chose to film the conversation outside from a distance, leaves out the narrative, and just lets body language explain the dialogue for the observer. Very few movies do this.
Everything that Rocky has been dealing with the whole movie is right here in this scene. He unloads and lays it all bare, and then he still has the will to go back to mick and say he was wrong.
"Solo adesso si fa vivo, eh? 10 anni per venire a casa mia, come mai, adesso viene, come mai? Che puzzava? Casa mia PUZZAVA?? IO NON T'HO MAI CHIESTO UN FAVORE!! NON HO MAI VOLUTO NIENTE DA TE!! Dice "Quando ero all'apice...". IO NON CE L'HO AVUTO L'APICE, MAI!! TU ALMENO CE L'HAI AVUTO!! L'APICE, LUI HA AVUTO L'APICE, E IO HO NIENTE, LUI MANDAVA AVANTI TUTTI QUANTI, TUTTI QUANTI MANDAVA AVANTI E A ME NIENTE, E ADESSO VUOLE VENIRMI A FARE IL MANAGER, MA IO ME NE SBATTO, IO FACCIO IL GRANDE INCO...SI', IO FACCIO IL GRANDE INCONTRO... NON HO BISOGNO DI NESSUNO IO, HO BISOGNO SOLO DI QUESTO!! SOLO DI QUESTO!! COMPRATI UN BIGLIETTO PER VENIRMI A VEDERE, OK? HAI DETTO CHE VUOI AIUTARMI, NO? COMPRA IL BIGLIETTO, COSI' MI AIUTI!! NON MI HAI MAI AIUTATO, NON MI FUNZIONA PIU' NIENTE, SONO TUTTO ARRUGGINITO E DEVO COMBATTERE PER IL TITOLO!! E io combatto... e mi faccio schiodare... MI VUOI AIUTARE? VUOI VENIRE A STARE CON ME? ACCOMODATI, ACCOMODATI, VIENI IN QUESTO CESSO!! E' TUTTO VIENI AVANTI, MUOVITI, E' FETENTE!! C'E' UNA PUZZA CHE FA SCHIFO... MI VUOLE AIUTARE, E ALLORA AIUTAMI!! VIENI!! AIUTAMI!! IO STO QUI!!"
so many people that this scene not only expresses who Rocky is as a character but it also contains the spine of the entire film. possibly one of the best scenes from the whole series.
This scene always gets to me and it shows the relationship between Rocky & Micky, like father and son....Micky just didn’t like what Rocky was, a leg breaker, for the Bruno Crime Family and no father wants to see his son go that direction, that’s why Micky treated him like shit cause he knew Rocky had the heart to become a great boxer but Rocky was just a nuckle head from the streets.....
you make ur movie and talking in interviews about ur Prime. WHAT ABOUT MY PRIME SLY!? At least u have prime. U had a actor carrer and get favorite. Most normal people have no prime, the have nothing, they do they work and get older until the point there is nothing going
This scene reminds me the tv series King of queens when doug get mad at arthur that he comes back too live in the basement again and when doug get so extremely mad than arthur going up and out of the house than when he start walking away than u see doug run after him and than bring him back xD
He had a lot to get off his chest to Mick but had too much respect to say it to his face. But he had to get it out before he could move forward with training- great scene
I love this film. I make Rocky right here too. Mick Didn't want fuck all to do with Rocky till he had an accidental shot at the big time. Great film, totally ruined by its ridiculous sequels, fourth and fifth being the most stupid.
MadBoy8734 Rocky 1 and 2 were good films 3 and 4 were the way they were because Stallone made it in Hollywood he was successful so he gave rocky the wealthy life in 5 he decided to make rocky poor again and have a similar vibe to Rocky 1 it did work kind of but 5 wasn't to good now with 6 he wanted to just have rocky in a normal life with one more shot at the big time but he lost that fight but it didn't take away how great the ending to rocky was because he was humbled and victorious even in defeat because he had noting to prove, creed really doesn't count as a rocky movie for me because even though rocky is in it creed was a different character
My mom took me to see this when it came out. '77? I was 8. I left the theater in tears and not even sure why. Very emotional. To me these movies are genius. The actors also. All of it.
Learn to not hold grudges, even from a short time ago such as losing a locker, the situation was now different and rocky needed mick now, accept help from those able to give it. Never let pride have the final say, it won't give no matter how much self damage it can cause.
I totally understand how Rocky feels. It’s hard to forgive people sometimes and easy to hold a grudge but it’s cool how he went after Mickey and apologized and started over with him.
I love this scene because it shows us another side of Rocky. He doesn't usually blow up like this, which is what makes the scene more authentic. He's all heart...you know it when he goes from yelling at Mick to running after him.
Trivia-the interior of Rocky's apartment was shot in an LA flophouse apartmnt, the exterior shot was in Philly. I read this in an interview with producer Bob Chartoff.
You're a nobody, but you get something that gives you value and now everyone's around you. People want you for what you do and not for who you are. A harsh truth.
I remember this scene as a kid and for some reason was infatuated with Rocky yelling. Don’t know why but it stuck in my head through the years. Whenever I get angry I play this and it makes me feel better. Sometimes we all need to get it out of our system.
Dang it man!! This make's me have to look up and blink alot to keep the tears in.Mick came in ugly money hungry after giving Rock's locker away, but then seeing him wobbling down the stairs being yelled at was sad.Be nice to old people, they are fragile y'all.
What about my prime Mick? Atleast you had a prime. I aint had no prime I aint had no nothing. Guy comes up offers me a fight big deal wanna fight the fight yeah ill fight the big fight. IM GONA GET THAT! IM GONNA GET THAT. And you wanna be ringside and see, do you, do you wanna help me out huh? Do you wanna see my face kicked in? Yeah ill fight him. Get my face kicked in. And you wanna help me out? Well HELP ME OUT! Cmon HELP ME OUT im standing here ...
So sweet I think and this is only my opinion mickey see's potential in rocky to achive great things but has nvr shown any inclanation, so this agrevates him add to this his age hes getting older. Then out of nowhere he gets a shot at the champion Apollo Creed and feels he can help greatly I mean can you imagine a 76 year boxing trainer and ex bantemewieght contender experience like that carnt be bought its the old cindereller man story aint it....
I see Rocky as though he was venting all of his years of built up frustration on Mickey, to avoid any needles drama in the next future and stay focused properly on the fight. That is more or less the purpose from a story telling perspective. But, it's really because of this that I see their bond working so well, since they're both perfectly honest to each other and don't try to lie to one another. The come off as the definition and embodiment of best friends, really.
