In 1910, Dr. Ricketts became interested in a strain of murine-carried typhus known as tabardillo due to a major outbreak in Mexico City, and the apparent similarity of the disease to spotted fever. Days after isolating the organism that he believed caused typhus, he himself died of the disease. His last papers were written in collaboration with R. M. Wilder. I had Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Ticks got on my dogs, and then on to my wife and I. My wife was ill for a week, but recovered well. I on the other hand reacted far worse. In fact, I was unconscious for three days (hospitalized, of course). It took my two weeks before I could get out of hospital (in a wheelchair). I did fully recover, it just took time. I was living in Northern VA at the time (Fairfax County). Part of the diagnosis procedure was a Spinal Tap, and let me tell you, I wouldn't wish that on anyone. As I say, I recovered fully, and there was no long term effects. That said, it was a horrible experience and I hope no-one else has to go through what I did. Thanks for the video.
You are very lucky. I never got sick but tested positive for antibodies of previous infection. I’m really messed up today and I have to assume it was from that
@@krozlee3443 I guess, at the end of the day, anything you survive means you're lucky. You did well not to go through the spinal tap's, coma, and weakness when you had the infection. One of the problems with it, even today, is that they can't diagnose it until late - almost at a stage where you've got full blown problems. There are specific anti-antibiotics they have to use. If you feel ill now, it might be worth seeing a doctor and getting some (although mine were intravenous).
My husband just got out of the hospital with RMSF and meningitis. Getting home IV antivirals now. He had the eschar lesion from the tick bite. Is that the kind you had? What were your effects after getting out of the hospital. My husband is still weak and disoriented. He has numbness in his hands too.
@@cosmictickle5168 The first sign for my wife and I were headaches. Long prolonged headaches that would not shift. I was, literally, in a coma for a number of days. When I awoke I'd lost a lot of weight, and it was some time - weeks - after I was released because I started getting back to the full strength. It was indeed a long journey. I didn't have any numbness, and I worry about the disorientation your husband has a little. I don't recall that, but on the other hand I was unconscious for so long. One thing about Rocky Mountain - they can't truly diagnose it until after you've had it 6 months. I had to have a Spinal Tap (which trust me, is an horrific test) before that truly knew what it was. The good news is, once it starts to lift, I've had no ongoing problems. Doxycycline is the anti-viral he should be on. I hope he does well!
I've had rmsf for almost 4 years now. My doctor is a tick specialist and he's said that my rmsf can go into "remission". He says my antibodies aren't fighting the disease anymore so I get flare ups often.
@@tishauri777 doxycycline, some kinda anti bacterial meds so I don't get yeast infection, some medicine for my stomach lining bc it was thin, blood pressure med, and many more. I've stopped taking all my meds now because I got tired of being sick from the doxycycline. I couldn't go into the sun, any foods would make me sick and constantly throwing up. I have taken like 7+ meds since I was 15. Just have to wait for the symptoms to come back to go back on doxy and the rest of the medicine.
Opossums will eat Ticks and are immune to rabies etc They eat lots of bugs , natural pest control.. They are beneficial to have around the house .. Sad thing is , they only have a 2 yr natural lifespan

My niece had the rash two months ago and they just diagnosed it now. She's getting the doxycycline treatment, but how effective is that two months after infection? Is it something that goes away if you get through the initial infection? I also had a very small rash at the same time but had covid and had no symptoms of RMSF or covid other than a 99 fever.
I legit watched this video last week.... today I was bit by a tick... I have never seen a tick in my life and 1 week after watching this I get bit !! It is what it is I hope it’s not serious I removed it after like an hour

@@ProfessorDaveExplains I have no idea what it takes to animate, but I am an heavy consumer of sci videos. Maybe try using different software. I think your channel could explode if you had graphics more like sci show or Kurzgesagt. You have a nice face and you are very smart and your content is on par with those channels.
