UPDATE: I've done a massive RODE comparison video with more information here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7PEUxSz1cxo.html Important camera info for those looking at Rode mics.

also the videomic go is on a bracket: unscrew the cold shoe, move it back on the bracket, screw it tight again. no viewfinder interference.

The entire reason for a shotgun mic is to be able to capture sound from a distance. Your review setup was great but I was so dissapointed you didn't do any distance testing. A mic sounding great with your face right next to the mic isn't a real world test.

You do realize that the Rode VideoMic Go has three positions for the mic. Just unscrew the hot shoe mount and reposition further forward or back.

BROTHA MAN! Thanks to you I was able to choose between the VideoMic Go and VideoMic Pro! I totally forgot to give you credit for this a few months ago. I watched so many reviews (dozens) and it was yours that finally helped me make the purchase of the VideoMic Pro and I'm extremely satisfied with it and use it for every single RU-vid video I've made so far... ALL 5! WOW THAT'S A LOT! (cough...) But really though, fantastic review and EXTREMELY detailed. Keep up the great videos sir!

+DSLR Video Shooter P.S- Caleb.. Really random, but I really loved your camera movements @0:22 . I know, these are really plain movements, but were they handheld? Or was the camera attached to a certain rig as you moved? I like those little shakes, and I got a feeling that its handheld, and just feels different since its not a DSLR. It's a mirrorless, which is lighter..and that's why the movements feel different. :]

You can actually make the videomic go sit further forward on top of the camera by undoing the little screw inside the shoe mount which lets you pop the whole mount off and reposition the pins to one of 3 positions (further forward, standard position or further back). Just a little tip if you need to use the EVF on the camera :)

Thank you for the video. I was actually comparing these two mics having bought a Go and we're picking up lots of unwanted background noise, not just noise but possibly interference, I was hoping that you were going to demonstrate this and confirm our findings. It seems like the Pro is just the better option, and the powered boost is going to help record interviews out in the wild but I guess hesitant that the interference problem is the camera or mobile interference, etc.

Thank you very much for this very informative review. I lean towards the PRO, but I have a few questions, hopefully you can shed some light on them: 1) Would the PRO be compatible with an external PC sound card? Or does it need to be powered by a camera? How about the GO? 2) I would use it for Vlogs, so do I have to stand right in front of the mic, or being sometimes on the left and right sides of the mic, and/or further back from it (1m) would decrease the recording quality? Thank you.

Hi Caleb, I have a question! I have Zoom H1 and Rode Videomic Pro. Is it better to keep the +20db on when connected to Zoom h1 or just put on 0db? I understand that it can be noisy when connect the rode vid pro straight into DSLRs so they make the +20db function to reduce the noise but what if I connect it to zoom h1 instead, should I just keep the +20db on?

Hey Caleb, thanks for the work you are doing. I am wondering if you are still using the Rode mic for your podcast production. And if you do, how much of the surrounding noises will be recorded by the mic? Let's say, if I have my computer running just next to me while recording a podcast, will this be heard? At the moment I am using a Blue Yeti mic which I have plugged into my Canon EOS 6d Mark ii. I am not fully satisfied with the overall sound quality. What would you recommend? Thanks for your answer.

Thanks for the information in this video. Im in a specific situation which, unsurprising, isnt addressed by any of the mic reviews i've watched or read. I have a tascam DR-05 and dont mind syncing the audio for planned shots BUT I'm attending a lot more high-end car meets and I'm wanting to record the sound of their exhausts while they are starting up and driving slowly through the lot as well as when they leave and punch it like mad men. I'm going to try the tascam at this next meet but I imagine it's going to be an absolute nightmare trying to pair up the audio with the right video. I've heard that the cameras sound processing is bad so thats why i went the recorder route but for these car meets, I think running a shotgun mic into my GH4 is my best option.
