From our archive, this video is the unabridged story of teenager Rodrick, with scenes never aired before. What's it like after a teenager is arrested and winds up in "juvie"? A lot of people have visions about what they think juvenile detention looks like, but how do things really go once a teen is arrested and hauled into a detention center? In this look back from our archive, we Rodrick's emotional meeting with his lawyer the night before his first court hearing, and two court hearings that end up following during his time locked up. Rod was arrested for possession of marijuana and resisting arrest. Rod maintained it was all a mistake and the weed wasn't his. Despite his protests, police arrested him and hauled him into juvie.
In this look back at the night of his Intake, we see the Intake Probation Officer go through the steps to process Rod into the center, talk to him about how he wound up behind bars again, and watch as a correctional officer takes rod back to cell units and processes him into his new cell where he will have to wait until his initial juvenile court hearing to learn his fate. We then see Rod have a heart to heart conversation with his defense attorney, and the tense and emotional testimony that comes out in court. We also hear from Rod's mom, his probation officer and his counselor, as everyone seems to be in lock-step hoping Rod will be released from detention and be able to carry on with his life.

I feel there should be an interim period between 18-21,22.. brains aren’t fully developed til then.. I had 2 boys get in trouble right at 18 and one was sent to state pen on an 8 yr sentence.. he was granted a judicial release after a little over 2yrs.. they had no prior trouble. They had involved parents, structure, did well in school. The legal system made things worse really. It took their family and counseling to repair them after jail. There was 0 leniency during court, sentencing. Both treated like they were worthless, trash humans. Both were never that. We were also treated like trash..Both are amazing adults now with families of their own. Couldn’t be prouder of them and The System had 0 to do with steering them into the stand up men they are today and have been for a long time now..

@@willyscj22 very well stated! Bc there is proof esp with males that our brains aren't fully developed until the mid 20's so I truly do agree wit everything u stated truthfully there should be a period where time should be allowed for mistakes bc no 1 gets it completely right there 1st time around

@@804smiles what they got in trouble for wasn’t a violent thing either. They both deserved consequences. And yes, as parents we were not happy with them and none of this “my kids an Angel”.. But what was done by The System at the age they were affected them very negatively and in no way was rehabilitative…And yes, the research is there concerning brain development and why this is not taken into consideration in this day and age is beyond me.. I feel like there should be a corrections program that offers counseling and Trades training. Comprehensive diagnostics to get to the root of why they made the decisions they did. A huge part of that is a Brain not fully developed.. executive functioning last to mature.. Nothing is ever solved til a root problem is identified either and proven research acknowledged .. one son had just been through a bad wreck. Not his fault. His neck was badly broken and clavicle. Lucky he lived. Went in to Cspine surgery and clavicle.. pre-wreck he was going to begin college. The wreck brought depression, huge anxiety and counseling and then meds. He was facing another extensive cspine surgery, felt like his life had been destroyed at 18.. He made a stupid, non violent decision during all this.. none of this was taken into consideration.. there is just too many young people being locked up and society giving up on them at 18-22,23 ish.. one son is a top sales person, he volunteers with a basketball program for at risk youth. Other is a successful business owner. Took us yearsss to Fix them.. Both Beautiful men and great fathers. Great sons. This isn’t a black or white issue either. We are white. It’s a System issue and I don’t know where the changes need to happen or what or how but something needs to change.. we are loosing too many young people://.. especially our young men::’(

First, I’m a Mom to a Son. I remember when my Son was 15-18 years old and I was terrified that he would make even one bad decision because it could change the whole trajectory of his life. It was scary! This case really made me root for Rodrick and pray for him to make it out there. Imagine how hard this world is as it is, add abandonment, bad environment (neighborhood/gangs) and pressures of addiction and it’s 10 times harder. Rodrick definitely would benefit from long term counseling or mentorship and I hope he gets that. He’s a good kid begging for support and success. If he were to ever read this, YOU GO HONEY, YOU GOT THIS!

@AKA-Nana - Your understanding and empathy for what young people like Rod go through is heartening. There are so many factors that lead kids to make mistakes; sometimes horrible mistakes. But we believe no child is born bad, and kids deserve second chances. We've seen the power of change, and with the right supports, kids truly can turn things around. Thank you for watching and commenting!

We are failing as a society. We are failing our children. We have a system that serves itself, not the actual needs of the most vulnerable. Then, this very system feeds on the #’s that it helps generate by offering little to no support for those who need it most - children who are growing up without parents who can function as actual parents (often because they had no real parents themselves), without guidance, without attachment, without support, without the emotional and physical basics. And thus, the cycle continues, and grows and self perpetuates. Heartbreaking beyond measure. Thank you for your coverage.

Like you said if you quit making excuses for these kids there's plenty of kids that grow up in bad circumstances and make right decisions or grow up poor The bottom line is some kids are just bad and bad kids grow up to be bad adults period. And that's a problem now there's example here in Nashville a boy 15 years old carjacking and robbing people even while he had an ankle monitor on cuz it kept letting him out on a low bail you think that boy's going to learn his lesson hell no he's going to kill somebody and he's going to be in prison for life for the electric chair like he deserves

This young man is so very salvageable! He is NOT a lost cause! There is nothing that two more weeks in detention could have some to help him. However, I think it’s VERY sad that he wasn’t offered some sort of continuation on the counseling he was receiving!! He seemed to do so very well with that counselor, and he seemed comfortable with opening up to him, and Rodrick even said himself that he thought, “if he just had Mr. Bob,” in his life, he knows he could do better. He is saying himself that he knows he still needs and wants help, and that is HUGE to me. I also worry for his safety after his admissions with regards to gang life. I hope he moved, as his mother said they may do. He has a good soul, he’s just struggling. My nephew is sixteen and is having the same sorts of issues, and this documentary was very moving for me. I wish I had some way to tell Rodrick that so many people watching this documentary SUPPORT HIM and see so much potential in him, just like the probation officer, judge, etc. saw in him. He will have setbacks, that’s part of it. But two more weeks in detention won’t help. It’s marijuana, for goodness sake. If everyone that ever smoked a little herb got arrested every time they smoked, our prison system would be even more overrun than it already is. (Prison Industrial Complex, can I get an amen?!) Anyway, good luck Rodrick! And good job, Rodrick’s Mama! You raised a fine boy with a good heart, and you haven’t given up on him because you KNOW how good of a person he really is, and what he can do in life if he wants to. Thanks for the good watch!

Prosecuting an individual and sentencing him to prison is a pretty good paycheck for a good amount of people from the police to the detention center then the lawyers the judge the probation the state prison the parole they all get paid for each individual so each individual is more like a certain amount not really a person anymore that's why it's like being filed away when your locked up. Sometimes I wouldn't get off work until 1 am, my father had just died. My father would have been picking me up, if he were live. So I often had to use public transportation to get home that late at night, for the first time in my life. I wasn't doing anything immoral or illegal. I wasn't alone in that either, plenty of kids were doing the same.

The eye roll and head shaking of the prosecutor is ridiculous. It just shows she has no intention on rehabilitating but in fact to keep this young man in the revolving door of prison. She needs to retire her position I’ve seen her act this way is many cases with the youth of Chicago.

But even then it's not too late, as you showed all of us. You found great people that taught you, what you might have had to learn a earlier (under better circumstances). He was in and out of the juvenile system and ended up loosing custody because he was in the system. His so called friends tried killing him. We went through a lot but I never gave up on him. Once he got released right before his 17th birthday he changed and never went back and I thank God. Roderick I wonder where you’re at in life. I wonder if you made your dreams come true and you’re that electrician you destined to be and a wonderful father. Perhaps your married now. I went through all of this as a young man, I became an active gang banger not member and yes there's a big difference, at age 14 untill 35 years old untill I moved to Denver I was well known and because i was in a black gang the cops really knew and messed with me to the point they would say i had a warrant if they caught me on a friday and on monday I wouldnt go to couet because there wasnt no warrant. If I wouldn't of moved I would be doing life or dead. My friends all are and if not they are going back in and out. A couple are drug addicts. Drugs where a no no in my Gang but now days it's not like that. I understand this man and just like me if I had someone to just talk to me or really listen n care I wouldn't of stayed involved so long.thank God I'm not in prison doing life, but I've been shot, stabbed in my head, jumped over 20 times, locked up you name it. Also had to do some things I regret but had to figure myself for to move on. When I was young I felt like I had to dumb myself down because being smart or even doing the right thing was looked at as weak. This young man is smart and has a good head on his shoulders but he needs support. I hope he's doing well and my blessings go out to him and his family.

Great lawyer, counselor, probation woman and compassionate judge; a heartless & possibly racist prosecutor as are some of the commentators on this page. It's a proven fact that Black teens and even very young children are ALWAYS treated differently and as adults and much is expected from them than their white counterparts by law enforcement and judicial system. I hope with all my heart that Rodrick, who must be around 30 made something of himself because he was clearly very smart, articulate and motivated. I'm weirded out, by the way, about a mother who never shed a tear for her son, even when he asked to hug her, while I, a total, stranger, was bawling my eyes out. I know this in no way means she doesn't love him but it's just an observation. Then, again, black single mothers raising their children in most trying circumstances have to often be strong. I pray for all the Rodricks i=of this country whose whole system is often rigged against them.

Roderick, I was you from age ten to twenty-five! As soon as my parole was up, following five years of incarceration, I moved away from the place I was raised...I haven't had a single interaction with law enforcement since I left my hometown. Not once, because I don't give people any reason to profile me. In my hometown,I am a career criminal! Too bad that's not true!!! I was made a criminal by over zealous, ignorant cops...Arrested my seven year old brother and I for playing baseball in an empty lot because of a foul ball hitting someone's house. We were charged with all the damage done over the years from time. Back then,I didn't have the support or education to know that I could fight back. Unfortunately, once I learned and won a case brought against the local police force for assault and profiling of myself and my innocent little brother when I was 18, they retaliated by fabricating evidence and putting me in prison for an 8 year sentence, for which I did five years. I realized I couldn't take another win against them because they may kill me next! Please get home and get away from these cowards and this crooked system!

@serialshagster6651 - Really appreciate you sharing your story. You are right -- getting away from the environment that led to trouble in the first place is key to finally starting a new life. Sadly, it can be very difficult for some young people to do. Glad to hear you were able to make it out and start anew. You give others hope.
