I'd like to suggest adding James' name to the title - this is just as much her interview. They make an amazing team! Thanks for such a great video with them.
One thing that really struck me is that how James is totally instrumental in how Roger works. She is the actual legend here. Behind every great man...is a great woman.
I adore his honesty. Especially when speaking about The Assassination of Jesse James. Mentioning the hour longer (first) cut made for a better film. If there is ever an opportunity to fetch his coffee on set, I'll do whatever it takes. It must be an amazing experience to watch him work.
Kazuo Miyagawa is the greatest cinematographer who ever lived according to Mr.Deakins. wow! Now we need to ask him why he considers Mr. Miayagawa the greatest!
Roger is very candid about what he likes and dislikes, and it’s funny to see James keeping an eye out for Roger if he gets too candid lol. Their Team Deakins podcast is amazing! Check it out

Comments weren’t available on the stream. Just FYI. That might be a new RU-vid thing though. Anyway to the point. This was a terrific interview with the masters themselves. I learned lots and was completely glue to the screen hearing what they had to say.
I couldn’t fully appreciate the visuals until I watched it with no sound. It has a very immersive story and it’s easy to not pay as much attention while watching it. If one watches without sound and analyzes the thought process behind each shot, you watch an entirely new area of the film.
I love Deakins' work, I literally idiolize his work, I even wrote my thesis based on roger deakins and the way he uses light in various films. The coen brother's collaboration, 1917 blew me off with the camera work on so many levels. I have not got the chance to watch blade runner yet, but I got the blu ray some time ago, will definitely find some time to enjoy that.

Hey, why dont you ask more specific questions like what is his approach to lighting a scene, his workflow, what does he do when he first gets into an environnement he has to light? Or describe us how he lit a specific scene in a movie, like more precise stuff about his work, It'd be a lot more interesting and trivial than a whole interview of asking how he feels about stuff, thanks!

Roger also said it is hard to teach how to be a cinematographer. It all comes down from the practical experience.
