Federer's recklessness is one of the reasons he was so fun to watch. The forehand against Haas in the 2009 French Open epitomizes Federer's approach, and contrasts starkly with Djokovic and (to a lesser degree) Nadal. Where Djokovic and Nadal might take an extra shot (or two, etc.) to set up a higher percentage winner, Federer attacks the return and goes for the winner then-and-there with an acute, inside-out forehand to the ad service box. Just a bonkers approach to the game, and he usually pulled it off. I was disappointed to see Federer lose a lot of the biggest matches in the last half of his career, but what we got in return (as fans) is Federer going big against the seemingly unpierceable guards of Novak, Nadal, and Murray. His tactics were risky, because that's just how he saw the game should be played, and those opponents were more risk-averse and consistent. Ocassionally, he did get his ass completely kicked (AO 2016 against Novak, Olympics 2012 against Murray, FO 2008 against Nadal), but for the most part Federer kept producing ridiuclous winners year-in, year-out, win-or-lose. His tennis was always fucking incredible to watch. Much closer to the knife's edge than his rivals, and, therefore, inarguably, uniquely wonderful to watch. It's a shame he died so many times at the end of the movie.

Kristian Gjerstad Eventhough he lost that final but I’ll never forget that point watching it live, that forehand came out of nowhere, it was a 🚀, unfortunately Nadal came up with a good serve to deny Federer what would’ve been the decisive break in the 5th set 🙁, it still hurts to this day as I’m a huge Fed fan since 2003, nevertheless the Spaniard deserved it in the end

Best shot in tennis history, at least his old forehand. Lacks power, accuracy and effiency now compared to the past, the difference is almost frightening. Btw, the music chosen here is outstanding.

Yup. It is my biggest question about his game. Why he changed the greatest shot in the history of the sport. It really bothers me
@slamandjam2
@slamandjam2 5 лет назад
@Logan Legend Yes, but it was clearly a conscious decision to change the forehand to keep up with him slowing down a bit. He shortened the backswing and added more wrist
@slamandjam2
@slamandjam2 5 лет назад
Logan Legend the reason being his body slowing down is just a theory for me. But I think it's clear he made a conscious decision to change it, I don't think it naturally changed due to his body. The end of 2006 was the end of his old "fearhand" stroke
@seanr.8499
@seanr.8499 5 лет назад
His forehand was definitely bigger back then, but it was also way more streaky than it is today. I personally think his current forehand is better in terms of mechanics - he can do more with it and more reliably with the added spin and shorter backswing. The shorter swing has the added bonus of not having to swing so hard on every shot and allows him at his ancient tennis age to last 5 sets as it is a more efficient swing. Just a theory - we'd have to ask Roger. lol

I've been watching his highlights and matches regularly. One thing is that the new racket has given him a lot more weight on his strokes, but it's not as nimble as his old one which he could wave around in any direction at will, I don't think he's still fully comfortable even today, even though it gets better every year. He also is not in the ideal position feet wise to hit his forehand as often as his old days and often hits it into the net from awkward positions. Third, and this is most important, Federer still plays all these shots. Back then, those shots weren't coming back - his opponents just watched helplessly. These days opponents are able to catch those would be winners and keep rallying.

He had to change his forehand because of slower courts and declined movement. It was the only way to stay on top of the game. From 2004 to 2006 his movement speed allowed him to get into positions where he could come up with FH angles no one would think of.
