6 of us watched the finale together, all males, all in our 30's....... all watching in a home here in Cape Town, South Africa. Well, we were all balling our eyes out during that speech of Roger's. We still finding it difficult to come to terms with such an extraordinary person, both off and on the tennis court !! The guy is like a God.........we all have so much to learn from him !! We salute you, Roger, to the highest of high !!! We still find the whole thing unfathomable and beyond beautiful !!!
While all are busy in celebrating this one of the greatest moment in tennis history i say thanks to those true roger fans who stood behind him between 2012-2015 tough moments.. its time to celebrate together!
You say "tough moments", but even at his lowest point, Federer never dropped below #9 in that period, 2012-2015 Only in late 2016, early 2017, going into the AO, did Fed drop our of the top 10 and people really started to write him off.
chaz michaelmichaels he was in USA his homeland while Federer isn't even in Swizertand(hope we write it that way) and it was his last match. you can't really compare
The moment from 15:20 to 17:00 is just History. In his head it's really like : "Okay guys, I gave my best, I gave you everything. Those are the tears of my career, all the tears I kept from the very beginning. There is the crowd, the world, legends, my parents, my wife and my children watching me right now. All this hard work for that moment. I know I did something big. Now, I can enjoy what I accomplished. Thank you."
Years will pass by...dust from our bones will be gone...there will be many new champions and new history will be rewritten....many records will be broken...but the name Roger Federer will be remembered as the greatest sporting legend in the history of mankind till the end of this sport....we are all very very lucky to witness this...we might someday tell these stories to our grandkids if we are lucky !!
I know this is late, but this comment deserves a sensible response... I totally agree with you :) ... and I am sorry that some people fail to appreciate the goodness in what you said and try to bury it in disgusting filth
they have the most beautiful country i have ever seen. it's just a breath taking country. they also have stan wawrinka, martina hingis, jaeger lecoultre and audemar piguet. what a country!
dude. you'll never want to leave. you sit by a lake and it's utter peacefulness. you go into the mountains and the views grab your eyes and you can't look away. it's not be like berlin or london with heaps going on so don't expect that. it's this place of serenity and marvel. if you get the opportunity, take it.
sultanabran1 Woww.. 4 times in Europe but not as close as what you said. I mean the stunning nature. This is a must i will take note on my wishlist. Thanks for the imagination.
Federer knows, he hasn't got many more years left. A hell of a career a hell of a champion and a hell of a person! Greatest sportsman ever! Hands down.
Roger being emotional at the end, just makes it even more special. And the crowd applauding him and recognizing greatness is even more special. So grateful to have watched him play throughout all these years. There will come a time when he hangs up his racquet, but as of now I feel joy, satisfaction and happiness to witness the undeniable greatest tennis player of all time and one of the best athletes to have ever lived. Hopefully I get to see him play live one day. Amen.
9 years ago, Federer cried after losing a tough AO final against his greatest nemesis, Rafael Nadal. 5 years ago, Federer cried after losing in the second round of Wimbledon to Sergiy Stakhovsky. Everyone thought that he was done for, and would never win a Grand Slam again. Last year, he avenged both losses by winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Today, just like 9 years ago, Federer was seen crying at the Rod Laver Arena. Only this time, they were tears of joy.
Get Good Are you kidding me? It was one of the most emotional moments of his life. Winning his 20th slam at the age of 36 is an out-of-the-world achievement that had the capability to move the crowd to tears. Imagine being in Federer's shoes and not crying tears of joy at that moment.
Only the SALT in his tears know the pain he felt between 2012 to 2016. It's for that he let it loose especially when he referred to his FANS and onlookers. Those who feel he is self centered, you people should acknowledge the amount of pressure and expectations he carries and honours. DON'T ASSUME and JUDGE him.
Cilic is such a nice polite guy and if he was up against anyone else, I'd rooted for him to win but hey! this is Fed we're talking about...everyone wanted him to win and I'm no different!
Sometimes in life, being a class act, a gentleman on and off court and simply being nice to everyone including other players may help you find someone unexpected like Ljubicic for Roger's case that can help you achieve success beyond your expections... Thank you Ljubicic. As a Federer fan we are so grateful.
It’s crazy. Literally every top tennis player is choking matches right now except Federer. He’s the only consistently great player. He goes out, grinds for the wins, and never gives up, what an amazing man.
Never seen RF so emotional. I think even he is surprised at what he can do sometimes, especially at 36! A true gentleman, and in my opinion, one of the greatest sportsmen/ women of all time. Thank you Roger
I think he's really emotional because I think he's most likely going to retire after this year, and that's why he's crying so much. I hope he doesn't though!
The problem is to try to search new words...new adjectives to describe this incredible champion. A real pure talent , class and elegance outside. A great athlete inside...this man is a miracle, incredible, inimitable...for me really Goat ! Roger n.1 forever
I am Proud and happy to have lived and witnessed the Greatest of All time. We all know the end will come but these are great moments to cherish for life time.
37 years old winning a grandslam.... Nobody had ever imagine that, and now you make it possible. Congratulations on your 20th grandslam title. I've always been a fan of yours since I was little and thank you for giving us a thrilling performance everytime you play, especially on a grandslam final...
Roger is the greatest athlete of all time, one day when he was younger i did not like him at all, arrogant, over confident, but he has been humbled by loses and fans, and now he is a living legend, immortal in the world of tennis and sport at all. What a time we have living in his era
What an awesome person Roger is! His talent is boundless and he's such a cool guy! How can you not root for this man? Almost 37 years old and still killing it out there! 20 Grand Slam titles and still going strong! There will never be another one like him. Soak it up folks while he's still playing. You're watching history in the making.
"...and yeah, you guys, you fill the stadiums, you make me nervous, you make me go out and practice...I just like to thank you...for everything." Roger Federer
Roger changed inside after the injury, he's more calm on court and plays with no fear. I think Roger can play at the top level until he's 40, I can't see why not, he rarely picks up an injury, he rests properly to give his body a chance to recover, he's a very intelligent guy, he beats you with skill and intelligence on court, very smart player. I'm a Rafa fan but Roger is the best, I love his one handed backhand and no nonsence play, no time wasting, loud grunting or mind games, he just plays. I tell you this, he is a big threat to Rafa winning Roland Garros in 2018, if he rests properly after this tournament and prepares well for the French Open, he is a serious threat. By the way, Marin you are a class act too, another great player, he's a credit to the sport, all the best for the future Marin.
im sorry, whatever you are a fan of, you should know, neither is Roger going to go for the RG title diminishing his chances at wimbledon, nor does this AO change anything about Rafa being by far the greatest player who has ever played on CLAY. I mean nothing would cement Federers GOAT status more than a run at the Season Grand Slam beating Nadal on the way on clay at age 36. I would love, love, love to see that. but lets stay realistic here. there is a reason 10 of nadals 16 grand slams are won at RG. his game is and will always be perfection for that surface. no way Federer risks his season for a slight chance at maybe having a shot in france.
But Roger skipped many ATPs of the normal tennis year circuit. Focusing more on big challenges (Maters and Grand Slams). I mean he's still good, a master of Tennis, but the age is affecting him somehow.
Rafa has been beaten at Roland Garros by Soderling and Novak so please don't say that Roger doesn't have a chance of winning or beating Rafa. Remember John Isner nearly had Rafa out of the tournament, it went to five sets and Isner is not a specialist on clay, anything but. Roger may choose to do what he did last year and focus on Wimbledon, I don't know, what I'm saying is if he is targeting the French Open as one he wants to win, then absolutely he is a serious threat. Rafa is always shaky in the first couple of matches in a Grand Slam until he gets the feel of the courts, after that he gets in the groove. I'm not sure Roger is satisfied with winning Roland Garros only once, he may decide to focus on it, I don't know what he has planned and neither do you. As a Rafa fan, I only care that he wins Roland Garros , that doesn't mean he will, he's got some stiff competition and you can now put Chung in the mix as he's game is perfectly made for clay. We may see a tennis player from Korea win Roland Garros.
Watching Roger since I was 4-5, now I’m 16, he’s always brought something special to tennis, even in the years when he wasn’t doing so well, the style and mastery with which he plays makes you appreciate him even when he loses a match. Last year was a treat to all tennis lovers, not just Federer fans, here’s to a great 2018!
I was lucky to witness this.I remember back in 2005, i cared little about tennis. Then one night this Federer guy was playing an early round match in the Australian Open and i just happened to watch Fed hit about 5 shots that made me go "what the $*&^ was that?!!" Still only watch the majors mostly, but i'm glad I didn't turn to another channel and have watched Roger all these years. And to see that he sill wants to win, his pure love for the game of tennis has not wavered, thanks Roger for just being you.
It's funny how that during Federer's GS drought (after having won his 17th GS title, in 2012), some people were saying he couldn't win any more grand slams. And they said the same in regards to Nadal, as well. But, here we are in the beginning of the 2018 tennis season and Fed have added 3 more GS titles to his tally. Nadal have added 2 more. And it certainly feels like that is probably one of the reasons why Fed was so emotional. I also think that the naysayers need to remember Rudy Tomjanovich's words: "never underestimate the heart of a champion."
It wont matter how many Grand Slams Nadal and Djokovic end up with above Federer. Federer is the greatest talent this sport has ever seen and will ever see!
Thank you Roger for being not only a great champion, but also a great influence and great example for MILLIONS people around the world. Why you have such a great fan base wherever you are? Simply because you have a wonderful attitude and always modest and giving others credit no matter what you achieve. YOU ARE THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME
The cruelty some trolls show to Federer for one reason or the other is truly astonishing. Roger, an honest, hardworking sporting legend and a father of 4 beautiful children. He is a gentleman to everyone. And also the most talented tennis player ever. This reminds me of Batman when Michael Caine said "Some people just want to see the world burn" The wrist slashers and their likes.
Fed haters like to laugh at fed's tears, as if it is not manly. Crying when you lose is often not the manly thing to do. No player takes his losses as honorably as Roger, heaping praise on his opponent and not using injury as an excuse for his loss even when it clearly played a role. Crying when you win is testimony to his incredible character. Having the humility and sense of gratitude and appreciation to indicate amazement at your own accomplishment, as if saying, "Thank God, I can't believe I was lucky enough to have such great success." 95% of today's players have the polar opposite reaction and can't wait to tell the whole world how unbelievably great they are even after far smaller accomplishments.
As a Nadal fan, I am proud of you Roger!!! I hope to see many more great matches from you. You will always be one of the greatest athletes of all time.
I didn't know tennis, but this is the man who made me love tennis.now I know tennis and I know who is federer.he is the legend of tennis of all time and one of the best athlets the world has seen ever.love u Roger from bangladesh.
Wooo hooo, so well deserved, Federer is just a tennis genius, totally unique. We are so lucky in our lifetime to see this man play because there has never been nor ever will be someone of his class.
And now he steps up to immortality because he is simply the best the most loved and respected tennis man of all time. We love you RF. May you leave long and prosper.
Damn. What a legend. The best there ever will be. You can say he is in the time with less competition, but to do it 20 times. And do it the this stage in his career is unbelievable. Witness greatness.
Congrats to Federer and his fans! As a Nadal fan, I also have a gr8 deal of respect for Federer and Djokovic, for their awesome contributions to the sport. And Federer is truly the GOAT.
Honestly this is greatest, most emotional celebration of sport I have ever witnessed. To see a man achieve such greatness and yet remain humble and genuine is truly awe inspiring. He deserves every accolade and all the applause for entertaining tennis fans for almost two decades. Easy to see why he was voted as one of the 100 most influential people on the planet. The GOAT of all GOATS.....
Best ovation of all time and best roger's reaction of all time that show how this man have contributed to tennis. Thank you Roger for all these great moments !
This here , is exactly why Federer is loved so much, both as a sports man and an individual. The way he shares his disappointments and his victories with the rest of us. I remember how he shed tears after losing Wimbledon 2014, 2015 to Novak. He was so devastated. One can’t help but feel for Roger, and honestly his wins have become my wins too. I find myself crying at his losses and his wins. The fact that he let’s us see them is what I love about him. He will surely be missed at retirement and I hope this dream run of his continues till he decides to hang his racquet. What a champion! On another note, Roger has raised the bar for the rest of the Big-boy gang. There is no way Novak or Andy or are not going to be inspired to win more GSlams and just re-invent themselves after Roger’s performance. What a great start to the year.
Winning five Grand Slams is the equivalent of winning the FIFA World Cup. Roger has the status of a four-time World Cup champion, which is unheard of. He is, undoubtedly, the greatest tennis player in history.
I LOVE this man! He is the greatest and most gracious, humble, and beautiful athlete I've ever been blessed to witness. My mother LOVED this man. She was in the hospital getting chemo and watching this man play brought so much joy to her tired heart. She died in 08 but was so crazy about her Roger. At the time I was young and so into Rafa and his unbelievable determination. But Roger is the maestro and will always be #1 in our hearts.
With his winning speech, it looked like this will be this last year as a pro. What a legend and I've watched him since I was a boy. There will never be another Master of Tennis Sorcery like Roger Federer.
Cilic's demeanor shows his gratitude and professionalism as a tennis player and as a person even after such an immense lost. Well done to Cilic and Federer
