Excerpt from the BBC documentary British Style Genius: A Cut Above On the tailored on Savile Row suits of James Bond and Michael Caine and Roger Moore visiting their favourite London tailor Douglas Hayward.
Rog made 3 classic Bond's . Live and Let Die. Golden Gun. And Spy who loved me. I think Spy was his best. But I really loved Live and Let. @@thedustykeratometer8570
met Roger and his then wife luisa back in 85 it was raining and they invited me to sit in their car as it was raining he was there for the london premier of a view to a kill, he was signing a photo for me and didnt want the photo or me to get wet, i was only a kid of 17, what a gentleman he was. we chatted then he said really sorry but must get to the odean in leicester square i thanked them both and left again to go home
My mother worked for Roger and Luisa when they were living in London just off Park Lane. She was their housekeeper and one of her regular tasks was to iron his tailored silk pyjamas. My mother also used to read the scripts he used to leave lying around and when they moved back to Switzerland Luisa gave my mother a beautiful blue Aquascutum raincoat. My brother and I also got a signed Roger Moore photograph which he dedicated to us. Wonderful people.
"See, how much tape he's got here." Classic Roger Moore. (He was James Bond) Brilliant Actor. Charming, Witty, Classy. Micheal Caine. Great Actor, Funny, Gritty, Great guy, tells a good story. Immortalised on celluloid.
It would be great! I have walked past Heyward's (it's on Mount St, W1) many times and I've never seen anyone coming out, famous or otherwise. I wonder if there's a back door for the famous?
Just listened to Michael Caine,s autobiography and he said roger walked across the road to tell him that he would make it as a star, this was long before Michael made it and roger was a star in the saint, Michael said that he never forgot how down to earth and no pretences, ps Michael didn’t mention the Italian job for some reason in his audiobook
They were such good pals. I love the way Michael says "I'm looking over the camera and can see Roger Moore staring at me in dark glasses ... Oi!!" Roger Moore had that almost unique blend of being ridiculously handsome, tall and with a refined voice, yet was always kind, caring, funny and self-deprecating. Many people look down on Roger's Bond films and even his acting. Yet watch some of his other films such as Shout at the Devil, Crossplot, The Man who Haunted Himself, Sea Wolves, Escape from Athena, Ffolkes, Wild Geese etc and it's clear that he was actually quite versatile and GOOD as an actor.
Roger Moore has such a modern stylish personal image. He was quite unique. He was naturally swarve ,cool and debonair. He said himself when interviewed once , good looks and mostly luck that gave him success. Otherwise don't go into Showbusiness.
Yes a lot of it was luck - he was of the age that was just too young to fight in WW2 (he was commissioned in the army at the end of 1945 I think) so he was around in London and available for theatre and film work at the time when most young men were serving overseas.
1:55 wow, so many mistakes in that advert! Anthony Sinclair's shop was on Conduit Street, not Savile Row (both in Mayfair, admittedly, but hardly the same street). Also, the gun used by Bond in Dr No, though referred to as a PPK, is actually the PP model. Finally, Madras tends to be patterned cloth reserved for summer shirts- I'm pretty sure most of Connery's Bond's formal Turnbull and Asser shirts were made of poplin.
I think Roger was the best Bond. I don’t think Michael Caine would have been good as Bond. But I can easily imagine him in any other of the reoccurring roles like M, Q, Minister of Defence, etc…
Sonny, with Michael Caine's silly cokney accent, the box office would've went all down hill. A cokney accent doesn't really fit a Bond persona. Very incompatible
I do Believe James Bond should never be seen in anything less then a top shelf Suit. Roger Moore's suit is the way He should always been seen, well dressed
The suits that Anthony Sinclair designed for Sean Connery in Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger and Thunderball were well tailored but more conservative than those made by Doug Hayward for Roger Moore; Moore was a more flamboyant dresser. Pierce Brosnan was wearing custom suits made by Brioni that fit him very well. Craig is wearing form fitted Tom Ford suits with less emphasis on the clothes in his Bond films.
I know sean connery was more imposing and more manly, but Ive always preferred Roger Moore as Bond, was far more elegant, sophisticated and really more Bond and more english. Connery was a brute without any nuances IMO. Connery's movies were better though, except live and let die, which is a superb Bond film, and Connery was far more attractive to females becuase of his menacing presence, which women love
One likes to add that really only Sean Connery portraits the very specific image that commanders of the armed forces carry. All the others are "agents". Connery was thus the best.
@@martinrivermoore9545 True, although out of all the Bonds, Sir Roger was the only one who was actually a serving officer in HM Forces (although he was in the army rather than the navy).
I have always thought what does "Egyption builders" joke mean ?? So the Egyptians were so lousy builders, therefore their work collapses easily (which is of course untrue) ? Or, is it like "Thank you Egyption builders for saving me out of that big guy" ?
It's a joke about foreign builders, most English people regard foreigners as inferior builders, but it's also making fun of that prejudice because of course the pyramids have stood for thousands of years.
I would also say it’s meant to be ironic because clearly some Egyptian buildings like the Pyramids have stood the test of time. So it’s a nonsense joke playing the opposite. It’s like saying Shakespeare was not much of a writer or playwright.
Great song, and one of my all-time favourite opening scenes of a movie! Monro also famously sang the Bond theme for From Russia With Love (the instrumental version was used for the title credits, though if memory serves a snippet of Monro's vocals can be heard on the radio in the scene where Bond is relaxing by the river with Sylvia Tench).
10:41...Michael Caine would have to smarten himself up if he wanted to play James Bond. Roger Moore is showing him up and giving him a lesson on how to dress with style.
It looks like he might have been recovering from cataract surgery. Even LED lights would be potentially damaging and painful if he had recently had eye surgery.
@writeract2 They were really great friends. Roger Moore in particular just seemed to be friends with everyone; all the A-list celebrities, and yet could show incredible kindness to complete strangers, as well as his incredible work for Unicef and Peta. Class personified.
Michael Caine would have made a great james bond...until he opened his mouth! He was much more believeable as the agent in, damn, I forget the name, but it was a pretty good secret agent movie, but he wasn't james bond in it. He would have said "Bond.....James Bond" and the villain would have replied "what did you say?"
Good point, on Zulu he was spot on. On Alfie he was pretty 'irresistable to women', that was kind of the point of the movie. Certainly when you stand him next to Roger Moore or George Lazenby, even Sean Connery, its not like there isn't a big suspension of disbelief at work in any of them.
