@@evankelly4346 It was October 1979. It was for the premier of the movie “Meteor”. I was one month into my 13 years as host of “Good Day”, a daily, live morning show that originated in Boston and was broadcast throughout New England. Ten journalists were invited to Flagstaff Arizona and flown, by helicopter, into Meteor Crater for lunch with the stars of the film; Sean, Natalie Wood and Martin Landau.

From everything I have ever read about the two, Sean Connery and Roger Moore were very good, longtime friends. I honestly believe that his comment about Moonraker was not directed at Moore, but rather at the change in tone from the somewhat more grounded early Bond films to the more fantastical Moore Bond films.
@SalemGhassanHanna
@SalemGhassanHanna 10 месяцев назад
Very true. And Moore did something similar when Quantum of Solace came out: he publicly criticised the editing that stopped him from following the action sequences but was very clear that he liked Craig's actual performance.

I remember agreeing with Connery's assessment of Moore as bond at the time. But now over the years looking back I've come to appreciate Moore more and more. It was much different than Connery but still iconic and unique and for many he was Bond. I still prefer Connery's version as it was darker and the movies themselves were more in line with the 'Spy thriller' genre. Where the Moore movies were more of a 'family entertainment' vibe. Both Connery and Moore had 'classic' movie's and 'classic' movie scenes that are now the stuff of legend. Cudos to both actors for a job well done. RIP both of you.

Sean and Roger were actually close friends...and I want to say I read somewhere that Sean said that he felt the makers of the Bond films with Roger had gone on to rely too much on gadgets, effects, and humor and gotten too far away from what Bond was really about...and Roger actually agreed with him.

Did you know that he left the audition not having gotten the role? At the time, there were many more actors with a lot more experience than he did, and even he admitted later on that he wasn't the strongest actor they auditioned. But the casting director said it had to be him, despite the higher-ups says, because she watched him leave the audition, sling his jacket over his shoulder, strike match off a lamppost and light a cigarette and walk away. She saw how everyone's attention was drawn to him; men looked at him with admiration while the women with desire and she knew that he was the man to play Bond. Because he was Bond. Just a fun fact that I love bc it's just so wonderful and impressive that he was able to achieve what he did, by simply being himself.

Connery Craig and Dalton were very serious whereas Moore and brosnan had a bit of tongue in cheek so maybe that’s why it appealed to me as a kid and Moore was my bond. However as an adult you watch all of them and understand they were all bloody good

This was a much better interview than the Barbara Walters one. This interview just shows you that people who bad mouthed Sean while living and still do so in death never really knew how much of a bundle of joy he was. I don’t think the media with few exceptions or the public ever truly took the time to know him.

I live near Pinewood Studios and some of my friends used to work on the Bond sets there building them. They were all very complimentary about Sean Connery, said he had no airs and graces and would always chat with the crew on set as if he was just another one of them

Bond is 49 here, looks fabulous (jealous!). He's right about effects over substance, and this is 1979. The early Bond films are by far the best, and still hold up as classics today because of this..

His observations about Moonraker are spot on. That one was the first peak of the franchise basically devolving into a sort of cartoon fantasy. Quite a contrast to the early Connery Bond movies. The second cartoon peak was Die another day. I was rolling my eyes the whole way through in the cinemas. Somehow the Cartoony level of Moonraker was charming in comparison, mostly due to the charisma of Roger versus Brosnan.

I think Roger Moore added his own take on 007 character and I think he did it well. I don't think it was worse or better, it was simply Roger's interpretation and I think he did well with it, as did Sean with his. Obviously the character has to develop and evolve with different incarnations to make the character relevant to the modern audience.

I've felt that Bond movies reflect the times they were made. Like during the counterculture movement and post-Vietnam era where Bond moved more towards fighting supervillains than purely doing the bidding of the government. Then it was back to east-vs-west, greed is good, and escapism... and finally extreme realism and violence.

Agreed. Sean was and still is the best Bond overall, especially the fight scenes in which he really looked like a guy who could do it for real. But I'd say Roger was the most charismatic and endearing Bond. You only need Dr No through to View in my eyes but I'm biased having grown up with them both regularly on the TV! Legendary actors and sorely missed.
