I used to think like Geldof but if you stop to think about it there aren't many artists who died in their prime that have the same "shrine like ability" as Freddie Mercury has, for exemple Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, Jim Morrison, Jane's Joplin etc. None of them have the same status or impact as Freddie had so I don't believe it's because they died in their peak, it's because that so special individual died, no matter why. Freddie Mercury, Michael Jackson, Elvis and John Lennon are another level musically talented human beings, with very rare abilities, hence the behaviour from us, "normal people".
@yevgeniyaleshchenko849
@yevgeniyaleshchenko849 5 лет назад
You want to diminish yourself and think of yourself as "normal", " average"? Okay... But don't spread it onto others. You can admire musicians without diminishing yourself.... You can also be unordinary even if you are not a rock star.... My point is - don't lessen yourself

The fact is, Freddie made us all feel special, and even his memory, and their music still does to this day, so, define normal :) in that moment of music, or even just watching back an old interview, we see that glint in his eye, that cheeky grin, that gorgeous voice from the heavens, in that moment, we are all united and in love with him all over again.

Roger, yes I loved Freddie and appreciated his voice and stage presence, but I was always checking out the rest of the band too. Let's start with you're amazing voice and superb drumming abilities, not to mention how handsome you are. I'd get chills just watching you Next comes Brian, a very seasoned guitar player who did extraordinary things with that instrument, those long fingers milked those strings. He also could sing as well. Last but never least is John, a great bassist who was just easy as a Sumday morning while up on stage but added much to the bands sound, BRAVO JOHN!! What I admire about all of you is how humble you were and still are. You are unlike some rock stars who made it big and turned into pompous asses, look at Mc Cartney. You stayed true to Freddie and to each other, God bless you for that. You four made the perfect recipe for Queen, anyone else wouldn't fit. Always enjoy watching any interview you do. Freddie was an outstandingly wonderful personality to those who were fairly close to him, and to fans 'strangers'. That includes me. I convince myself I know enough about the man-he-was by giving attention to him when he wasn't the focus. He was a good person. He socialised (and, partied), took responsibility for well-being of others, had serious conversations, i.e., evidenced sincere interest in others no matter their life status or age. He worked diligently and hard. Freddie Mercury was a good human being. Yet he wasn't perfect. None of us are. He was blessed with unique talent PLUS a drive to improve when he envisioned the need AND to employ patience when it was necessary. Then grief descends 'and won't let go' when death (Freddie's in this case} interrupts "your" life leaving you stunned, missing and recreating fillers for what was. Thank you RU-vid. Thank you for this post; for insights from interviews such as this one. And thanks to Roger Taylor for being there now for Brian May as John Deacon has left us with only his past contribution of music, humour, team play, and energy. Queen gave us a product that continues to get us thru the bad times. Queen deserves accolades raining down for generations to come. Seems it's happening. Right? Music makes the world go round. . . Queen: Freddie and John and Roger and Brian made music happen like no other Band of performers in the studio or on the stage. Accept that truth.

Yes, the members of Queen are legends BUT this whole video is 'bout Fred's legendary (or God like) status that ppl STILL go crazy for 28 yrs after his death. The others are still living AND therefore, aren't getting the same type of "we miss you" affection! Janique's quite right in that Freddie WAS the soul of the band. He was the one with the ear to turn some of the others' songs from mediocre rock songs to commercial hits and THEY don't have ANY reservations sayin' this either. Freddie was more than just a frontman, he WAS the Queen of Queen! And before anybody start in on Adam Lambert blah, blah, blah, I'm speakin' to the band's ability to carry on writing new music on the SAME level as when Fred was with them. The only "hit" they'd had post Fred's demise was "Only You: the Good Die Young" and WE DON'T know for sure if Bri wrote the song as Freddie's left them a multitude of HIS songs to Queenfy. For all we know, Freddie could've written that song for loads of ppl who were close to him who also died from AIDS like Kenny Everett. If it wasn't for him playin' Bo-Rhap the way he'd did all those yrs back, who knows if Queen as we know them would've become as massive legends they are today. That said, it's quite evident Queen will NEVER be the same as when Freddie was alive and by their side. He had every opportunity to go solo and leave the band behind (like so many frontmen/frontwomen had done before). He halfass promoted Mr. Bad Guy AND didn't do a solo tour (just a press release). He did this to prove a point to his brothers of the band and that was THEY were a family and belong together. From the Live Aid concert on, they recommit their efforts to Queen. All of the others had solo/side projects of their own which didn't measure-up to Freddie's solo projects (with Mr. Bad Guy being a disaster at that time) which says a LOT 'bout the others' solo success. It's Fred who made Queen popular with his outrageous stage antics & witty rare interviews that kept ppl wanting more AND it's Fred who STILL draw ppl to the concerts to see/hear him sing "Love of My Life" with Bri! Without Queen makin' any new music that's on par with what they'd churned-out while Fred was alive, they're essentially a cover band revisiting their songs with Adam...sorry. Bri and Rog would do better to revise Smile with Tim Stuffell and create new music that would be on Queen level.

@@Motown-1966 I love your post! I 100% agree with you. I’m not an Adam basher. He’s quite a good singer in his own way. In this scenario I don’t like his theatrics and I don’t think Queen songs suit him. I certainly couldn’t hack him for an entire Queen + concert. I can barely get through an entire song without squirming. He should be doing his own material and I wonder what will happen to his career when Brian and Roger eventually get to the stage they don’t want to (or can’t) tour any more. Roger famously suffers from arthritis and Brian has had heart problems. Will people really pay to see AL sing Queen classics with none of the original members? Before any Adam supporter says “Brian and Roger like Adam, so you should suck it up and respect them”, I do! They can tour with whoever they want. However, I was one of the many Queen fans who contributed to their success and fortune over the years (40 or so) by buying albums etc. and i won’t be denied the right to say I think they made a wrong choice with AL. I’d love to see Brian and Rog, just not with him. The idea of regrouping with Tim Staffell however is genius.

For those of you interested in Roger, I just read a very wonderful book called Queen In Cornwall and I think it was written around the early 2000s, but it really gives a lot of insight into Roger's beginnings in Cornwall and how he fought and was single-minded to be involved in music in his life. if everyone thinks that Freddir was the main driver of the band, that clearly is not true. Freddy no doubt shaped it and had tremendous input, but you can see Roger's strong musical background and preferences shine through, of course as well as Brian's intellect and talent, and John's steady creative bass work.

@Motown-1966 4 года назад
Nina No doubt Freddie was exposed to and had Indian culture. After all, he stayed there most of his elementary school yrs 'till age 16. He had relatives living there with whom he'd stayed with when school was out (his Grandmother and Aunt). That said, they (his relatives living in India) were all Parsi/Pareses (or Persian descent). They migrated to various places after fleeing Persia cos of the Muslim overthrown of their land (now Iran). These folks practiced Zoroastrianism and carried it with them to surrounding lands such as Turkey, Iraq, and India. By DNA, these folks' roots originated from Persia and therefore ethnically are Parsi (Persians). Freddie's parents were both born in India and that's their nationality. They were Parsi Indians (ethnicity /nationality). Freddie and Kash (his sister) were born in Zanzibar and were/are Parsi Zanzabari (ethnicity /nationality). India at that time was a British protectorate. Fast forward to '64 when the family fled to England due to the revolution in Zanzibar (which was a British protectorate at the time Freddie & Kash were born)...now known as Tanzinia. They were already British subjects as both countries were protectorate under British rule. They obtained full British citizenship after arriving to England and considered themselves Brits from that moment on. I've never heard/read Freddie referring himself as Parsi Indian...just as a Persian Popinjay 🦚 and he'd strutted 'round on stage as such.
@Nina-oi1qk
@Nina-oi1qk 4 года назад
@@Motown-1966 Yes I know about Parsis; The last name Bulsara is a very common Parsi last name; in fact it is my last name although we are not Parsi but my ancestors come from Bulsar. Freddie's parents were Indians from Bombay. He may have chosen to hide that fact but I am saying it is understandable given the situation he was in in the late 60s in England.
@Motown-1966
@Motown-1966 4 года назад
Nina The Bulsara’s (Bomi & Jer, Freddie’s parents) we’re Indians by nationality but were Parsi by ethnicity. This is why the Parsi community make this distinction of identifying their Persian roots over their nationality (as most ppl do when they migrated from their native lands). Take the Americas for example. They’re the best way to show this. They (North, Central, & South) are fairly young continents and have received various different ethnic/racial ppl down through the years. There's generations of Italians, Irish, Polish, German, French, Spanish, African, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, English, Indians, & indigenous ppl living here. Everybody's distinctions are their ethnicity and their commonality is their nationality. This is why ppl in the USA (in particular) identify their blood line (ethnicity/race) first and then their nationality secondarily: Irish Americans, Polish Americans, African Americans, Chinese Americans, etc. That said, I don't believe Freddie tried to hide his cultural heritage at all...he simply didn't feel it necessary to advertise it on his sleeve as He'd always been private. Further, he likely changed his sir name as to not shame/embarass his Dad when he started dressing in that androgynous way in the beginning. If He'd revealed his origins, he would've had to say he was Parsi Zanzibari or East African and I'm sure he didn't want to go there...especially making anew in England after he and his family were forced to flee his home land the way they had. It likely was decided early on best not to by his family and the music industry. You know how the industry was back in the late 60's and '70's. By the '80's, Freddie was asked 'bout his childhood in an interview and this audio conversation was included on the Untold Story. So again, I wouldn't say he'd hid his cultural background as if he was ashamed or anything like that...more to protect his parents from what I'm sure would've been embarrassing to them & their religion ✌🏾

With all due respect, Roger (and Bob), and I do adore you, but it wasn't Freddie's long hair (highly fashionable at the time - you all sported it) or his flamboyance and conflicted sexuality that made him into a revered singer and performer in the past and for a long time to come. Indeed, I suspect that might have counted against him in the earlier days. I'm Brian's age but sadly wasn't a fan of Queen's in my youth (though I discovered that Queen songs were subliminally woven into my life nevertheless), and have only become obsessed since the film, which piqued my curiosity. Since then I have delved deeply into RU-vid history of Queen interviews and live concerts, and have become smitten. I am not prone to erecting shrines for anybody nor do I need famous personalities to look up to. Evidently, he needed his public and he gave it all of himself every time, which is why he is so loved. He played the game to perfection, like everything he did, including his self deprecation.. Nor did he have a great "pop" voice. He had a divine voice that moves to tears even after repeated listening. He composed and sang in many genres, like Mozart and he died at 35. It is hardly because of their early death that we still listen to them, Bob. Yes, Queen are a unique phenomenon in rock culture for their loyalty, ingenuity and delightful intelligence, but I doubt it would exist without Freddie. He was and still is the frontman, whoever came after him. Freddie was Queen and vice versa. You've done a marvellous job of keeping him and Queen alive - thank you for that. But his enigmatic leadership in music and of crowds had little to do with long or short hair, moustache or not, or his sexual proclivities. As he said himself, he was genuine, and as a performer he bared his heart, both of which make him simply irresistible.

I just loved every single word you used to describe what I could not agree more, Freddie Mercury represents... Although loving queen songs in my teens years, its since the movie and watching the videos on the internet that I have become obsessed with Freddie Mercury I wish every single son he sang there was a video of him, he is so much gifted and he had so much passion and talent and grace and beauty......

In all honesty there's none of the band (Queen) that you could describe as being foolish. I think it was the Northern Irish guitarist Gary Moore who said about just how well educated each member of Queen actually are and quite clearly Roger Taylor is no exception and with that idea in mind then Queen is a rather fitting name for the group.

This guy Bob Geldof its very wrong when he asserts that Freddie Mercury died at the Pick of his career. In fact its the opposite.... He was 45 and had been in the business for 20 years. Queen hadnt even record an album for the last few years let alone touring
@Alfonso162008
@Alfonso162008 4 года назад
What are you talking about? They hadn't been touring in 5 years but because of Freddie's illness, but they still launched 2 records, the last one only a few months before Freddie's death. He might not have been at the absolute peak of his career, but he wasn't in the decline either (artistically speaking, of course).
