After two weeks of a reduced presence, Ncuti Gatwa returns in full in a romp of an episode which paradoxically occupies a space of inconsequential, frothy pre-finale fun YET throws in a curveball so fleeting which upends Doctor Who canon as we know it.
But is that part of the episode's fluffy cheekiness?
Join me as I become arguably TOO preoccupied with Richard E Grant now canonical status as the Doctor and let's digest Rogue...

I think we can safely say that you have to review Scream of the Shalka now as part of your marathon

In terms of Rogue coming back, Jonathan Groff has spent the past 10 months performing on Broadway, and is not finishing until the end of July, so I doubt we are going to see him in S15/S2 which clashed with filming, but given the feedback I wouldn’t be surprised we end up seeing him in S16/S3.

The Kylie Minogue scene reminded me of Boom Town, when the Doctor keeps teleporting ‘Margaret’ Slitheen when she tries to run away.

Gotta agree - a light, frothy, fun episode before the finale - a real chance for Gatwa to show us what he can do, and a necessarily doctor heavy episode after two he's barely in. Really no idea where the hell this finale is going, seems like so many mysteries have been set up I have no idea how they'll be resolved!

Imagine if we had Richard E Grant as The Unknown Doctor as a companion with the 15th Doctor. An this story would be a side storyline to a bigger picture story.
@josephchambers2000
@josephchambers2000 28 дней назад
Well, his companion from the main story was the same actress who played Liz Ten and his Master was Derek Jacobi. I wouldn't object to all three returning.

the Scream of the Shalka version of the Doctor perhaps accidentally created by Clara when she neutralised the Great Intelligence🤔

the Shalkra Doctor being made canon made me feel crestfallen I thought it would have been better if Jodie regenerated into Grant's incarnation.

The Shalka master is played by Derek Jacobi, so does that mean he’s the Professor Yana incarnation?

I would love to see a Shalka Doctor live action series with Richard E Grant. As for Rogue, it was a fun episode to watch. There were more River Song vibes than Captain Jack vibes. Quite fitting given the plot.

Does this mean Scream Of The Shalka is coming to the iPlayer or Disney +?

@Synthpopper 27 дней назад
Yeah it's gotta be Shalka. As much as I want Rowan's Doctor to be canon, Fatal Death is "just" a parody whereas Shalka was technically an anniversary special.

I'd agree with most of what you said and your phrase of " Popcorn Dr Who" sums it up nicely. My main issue with the episode is the romantic involvement of the Dr with Rogue. I really don't like the Dr to be romantically involved or attracted to anyone and it's my main gripe with all of New Who. I just don't think it's Doctory and given he's a Time Lord who periodically changes appearance, character and sex is inevitably doomed.

Not to mention that the Doctor was fantastic asexual representation in media, which is an incredibly rare thing with historically asexual characters being written as offensively robotic and emotionless. By having the Doctor fancy people, like with Rogue or Rose Tyler, that representation is lost. Positive depictions of asexuality in mainstream media is borderline non-existent, it's seriously one of the rarest things to see in a protagonist character outside of super obscure fringe media, so I think it's a genuine shame for the only major mainstream example to be routinely swapped out for the standard affair.
@chris_stokes
@chris_stokes 28 дней назад
You know, I'd never really considered before how this has messed with positive asexual representation, which is an astonishing oversight on my part and something I'll be considering an awful lot going forward. I'd never had any issues with the Doctor being depicted as a sexual being but had completely overlooked what you've highlighted here. Thanks for giving me something to consider

Agreed, and I think it's lazy... writers can pad things out with romantic "kitchen-sink" dramatic scenes when, in a show like Doctor Who, they should arguably be writing sci-fi scenes, or at least interactions between characters that _aren't_ romantically charged. What was particularly weird about this story was that, by so readily succumbing to Rogue's charms, the Doctor came across as a randy, lovesick puppy; he was practically gagging for it! That's not how I'd expect the Doctor to behave, whether the object of their affection were a man or a woman.

As a gay man, I think more queer romance on TV is a good and necessary thing. However, it has always made me very uncomfortable when the Doctor displays romantic or sexual attraction towards humans. I didn't like it when it was Rose, I didn't like it when it was Madame de Pompadour, I didn't like it when it was River Song, and I don't like it here. Part of what makes Ten and Donna my favorite Doctor/companion pair is that they were both emphatically uninterested in getting into each others' space pants, and I think that's how it should be. I understand that romance plots are probably designed to make the Doctor seem more relatable, but it has the opposite effect on me: it pushes me away a bit rather than drawing me in. That all said, this was a fun episode with great performances all around, and I am also very excited for the finale.

I don't quite connect with 15, however, that's not Ncuti as I think he brilliant in the role. It's more this particular doctors personality I'm not quite connecting with. But that's fine, I'm still enjoying it
@polgarauk5606

I would describe this as a good episode with some parts I really enjoyed but it wasn't an episode for me. I am not a fan of that type of period in time and it put me off BUT that is a me problem. My not liking it much is not because of the romance that didn't bother me at all in fact I loved it most especially because it will blow the minds of the anti-woke brigade and I am all for annoying them. Where Richard E Grant is concerned another appearance he made in a couple of episodes is as The Great Intelligence who was last seen stepping into the Doctor's timeline followed by Clara. It may be a misdirect but is still worth a mention. Ultimately it is probably just Russell playing with the fandom.

Excellent review, although this one didn't connect with me, and I found it a rather dull watch. I will give it another go, of course, but TBH I'm not in a particular rush to do so.

@@salsaman I don’t know how to respond to a question as loaded as yours is. He is the Doctor in the same way that I felt David Tenant was but has his own spin including not being as weighed down by his sense of survivor’s guilt. He is less cruel but you still sense that the hardness is not as intense. He is more emotional in ways that still is the Doctor but not as apart. The point is he’s giving a nuanced performance. The fact that he’s black and not straight (we don’t know if he’s gay) opens up more stories but it’s not the performance. The performance is by how the actor makes you feel.

Another millennial who is immune to RTD's sinister ideology of sexualising children. This was probably the poorest episode in terms of quality, but then I say this every week. They just get worse. You do talk nonsense. Can you compare this to any episode pre Whitaker? There is NOTHING Doctor like in Fruity's Doctor. The Doctor was never a camp, hypersexual, hyperactive, premiscuous, flirting, gay before. You've just ignored anything that's come before. The whole episode was horrendous.
@robtymec2045
@robtymec2045 28 дней назад
Ummmm .... the Doctor has been camp (Tom Baker in Seasons 16 and 17 was probably him at his campiest). He's been hypersexual, promiscuous and flirty (that's, very much, all of Ten's traits - and, look! I can spell promiscuous properly!). Most New Who Doctors are quite hyperactive. The only trait he may have never displayed before that you've put in your highly inaccurate diatribe is gay. But even that may have existed previously. The very fact that the Classic Doctors often travelled with attractive women and never put a move on them may be telling of something!
@Rik77
@Rik77 28 дней назад
Lol this post is hilarious. Both 2 and 3 were camp, and both 10 and 11 were quite forward. 11 was "sexualised", your post is quite a diatribe of hate. And children? What children were in this episode?

You seem to be putting your persona into the show. I saw nothing that you mentioned. You have some pre-determined agenda and then make everything fit your warped perverted persona. Also, look into having a test for Altheimer's. You have a very poor memory. Or a selective one.
