Rokinon 14 mm 2.8 - Review

Yea, I recently read on amazon customers, Rokinon may have some quality issue. Heard people were getting slight softness. I will do a review one day with both lens. The weather here is terrible at the moment ;\. Overall , I think rokinon is a good budget lens.

OrelRussia , there is no need for canon profile, on raw, you can just select the samyang 14mm 2.8 - its the same lens, and that profile does a decent job.

This lens has Mustache distortion. From Wiki: "Mathematically, barrel and pincushion distortion are quadratic, meaning they increase as the square of distance from the center. In mustache distortion the quartic (degree 4) term is significant: in the center, the degree 2 barrel distortion is dominant, while at the edge the degree 4 distortion in the pincushion direction dominates. "

Rick Sterling As far as I know, selecting a lens profile in Lightroom can fix even a moustache distortion (unlike the standard lens editing tools Lightroom).

Yes, you can correct the appearance of mustache distortion with available lens profiles, but much better images can be had by starting out with less lens distortion in the first place. ;-)

shaun bokowski Thank you for the compliment! I actually didnt think I would still have a Pentax for 3 years. I still use it today and its a great machine! I use it quite a bit . Neck to neck with my Nikons . I also have, Lumix and a Canon. I just make reviews for the Pentax because Im confuse why there isnt any.

Yup. You are 100% correct. I will make a separate video on Pixel shift. I didnt want to go too off tangent from the Rokinon 14mm 2.8 but yes, its for only stills.

Not entirely true. The latest firmware provides a MC (Motion Compensation) mode in Pixel Shift. Works pretty good too. Basically it will overlay the data from image 1 for areas with moire.

Yup, I saw that in Silky pix, it seems to handle things well.

I just got the IRIX 15mm F/2.4 - It's awesome. Slight barrel distortion (unlike the mustache distortion in my Rokinon 14mm) and some vignetting, but the LR - PS IRIX lens profile removes that with a single click! Very nice Shot there Rick. Yup I will agree. Even in my test, the Irix handles a lot of those distortion, vignetting, and CA pretty good. Flaring as well! Im more of a sky shooter, but If I was doing interiors, 15 mm is nice. Funny that no one on this comment area ever said 1 thing about the Laowa. LOL. But everyone came gutting me on the IRIX! LOL.

Rick, be honest now. How is the lens hood quality and the lens cap. Dont you tell me its made out of platinum diamonds now. Lol. Its scratchable and its a bit cheap on the build quality right?

Whats up! Make sure you have the ring on the letter A. Once that is set, you are solid.

@@theCameraVille Ok so i twisted the ring while depressing the button to get it into A, but i thought that the F stop had to be controlled manually. is the camera able to adjust it once this is set up?

@@mikedimimd By doing this the f stop can be only controlled by the camera. You can do manual if you need to. Just make sure you know when you are on manaul or A. Sometimes I forget

Hey ! Thank you for stopping by! I actually used to own the samyang 10mm 2.8 actually ;). It is a great lens! I had it for my apsc crop body and it worked excellent. At the time, I didnt have astrotracer as well. I bought a Vixen for astro, but that cost $400, and also you need to buy an additional tripod head for it, which cost another 50-100 bucks depending how reliable you want it to hold your entire dslr+lens. ( nightmare) All in all, I read about the Pentax K-1 with a built in astrotracer and yes, it seems like you saw my schedule. I will be doing an astro video real soon. Like in a few days! Hopefully it turns out well as this will be my first time using astrotracer because around summer is when the milky way comes in my area and that is when I come out at night ;). cheers mate! Haha! yes, I notice that spot ! I went ahead and cleaned up that sensor. Yea, I was thinking of taking it off but it was either to sweat or get sun burn. Need that sunscreen. lol.

Can you get a polarizing filter to fit over that lens hood? I have looked at that lens but the bulbous front element is too goofy.
