Well, if you're looking for one and don't mind that it's a pre-owned model then reply. I know several owners who are selling their units off. Both are Fantom 7. Be sure to do your due diligent homework so that you know exactly what you're buying. Folks either love the Fantom or hate it; rare to find anyone in the middle. I love my Fantom 8 but I also use it in conjunction with a desktop DAW.

@@Bronwyn031 The 6's and 7's still are generally available for the moment, but the 8's are hard to find. It might be a keyboard-related part that Roland can't get. I was pretty ambivalent about the Fantom when it came out, but the 2.0. 2.5 and now 3.0 enhancements have all been big improvements, and I think that it compares very well now to the competition. Still wicked expensive, though.

FANTOM has 11 engines. V-Piano, Supernatural Piano, E.Piano, Acoustic, Base Zen-Core Synth, VTW, 5 model expansions. Montage has 2 engines. AWM-2 and FM-X. PCM and FM are superior on Montage while FANTOM excels at VA, Synth Modelling, Wavetable, Piano Modelling, Acoustic Modelling, Tonewheel engine, Acoustic/Modelling hybrid (Supernatural) technologies. FANTOM also has a dedicated synthesizer section. Zen-Core's resolution is up to 1024 while Montage has a midi resolution for all parameters (127). FANTOM has keyboard switch groups while Montage has scenes. Scenes are much more useful imo. FANTOM has sample pads with up to 2GB of storage. Montage doesn't have sample pads. FANTOM has 2GB for keyboard sampling and Montage has 1.75 GB. Not much difference. The new Kurzweill K2700 has 3.5 GB. Now that's better! FANTOM has both the pitch/mod wheels with Roland's own joystick controller. The Montage has the pitch/mod wheels with a ribbon bar. FANTOM has 1 arp for the entire scene. Montage part's can each have their own arp. This is a great feature. FANTOM takes 37 seconds to boot up (nice animation to watch though). Montage takes 17 seconds. Montage has a 16/3 stereo audio interface that works at 44.1 Khz/24 bit. If you start using frequencies above 44.1, it will cut down to 4/3 stereo. FANTOM has a 16/3 stereo audio interface that works up to 96Khz/24bit. Nice. FANTOM has 1 Mfx per zone. Montage has 2 per part. Win for the Montage. You can only layer up to 8 parts on Montage even though it has 16. On FANTOM, you can layer up to 16 parts. On both keyboards I will caution you to watch out for the polyphony. The V.Piano is restricted to Zone 1 on FANTOM and the VTW (Organ) is restricted to Zone 2. The V.Piano has unlimited polyphony. Montage has over 10,000 preset arps. FANTOM has 128 arp types? But you can change various features of FANTOM's arp. Montage you can't do much other than select. Montage allows you to make your own arp though. Pretty useful. Can't do that on FANTOM yet. FANTOM has a fully fledged clip based sequencer for laying down ideas, making beats and live looping. It has piano roll editing, microscopic editing, automation tools and each bar can be up to 64 measures. It can also do compound time signatures. Montage has a pattern sequencer that can go up 128 measures but you can only store up to 128 patterns. FANTOM and Montage are both modeless. Performance is the only state in Montage. Scenes are the only state in FANTOM. Now onto connectivity. FANTOM has 2 main outputs using XLR and TRS connections + 2 stereo sub outs + analog filter out. Montage has 1 main output using TRS jacks + 1 stereo sub out. FANTOM has 2x CV & Gate outputs with 4 external USB Type A ports and 1 Type B port. Montage has a single Type A and Type B connection. FANTOM has 2x Combo jack inputs with Phantom power. Montage has a stereo TRS input. Both keyboards have aftertouch. Montage has Super-Knob. FANTOM has matrix-control. Many more things, but this is a general overview.

The main things, beside the synth engines, are that the Fantom has only 1 arp at a time, and only 128 editable types, where Montage has 10,000 types and 8 at once. Individual sounds are not truly stored within the multi on the Fantom, as they are in the Montage/MODX, although they both claim to be “mode-less”. Fantom has a pattern sequencer vs a basic linear sequencer on the Montage/MODX. Fantom has a ton of optional free and paid content via Roland Cloud.

You're right it does. It sounds like VST's in a unit which has loads of features for creating whole songs that sound good without the use of a DAW lol

Yamaha expansions aren’t new engines or models. The Montage is still only using their AWM2 and FM models. Nothing wrong with that but that would most likely be why. Roland doesn’t charge for updates. Only the models if you want them.

No. They clearly said it would be the release of a "50th Anniversary model". Probably a new Boutique or something. Not sure why people are putting a certain amount of expectation on it.

@@xp50player exactly my point. The closest to it for Editing would be like the PC editor Korg out out for creation so having it in the keyboard is a huge plus for the Fantom in comparison

This almost seems like a korg tribute from Rolands part, It would be cooler if the fantom got some features from the V-Synth.

Why the hate just because enhancements are made via software now instead of hardware expansion boards or PCM cards, like they used to be?

@@xp50player No. You didn't read my sentence. As with software products in geneal, you don't get finished mostly bug free and full featured soft and hardware these days. Instead you get UNFINISHED products for full and premium price. Then they may or may not fix the bugs and bring some features later. In many respects the ZenCore Fantom is just an upgraded FA System and is less usable and feature rich than the Fantom G. The Fantom FA line just got a ZenCore engine and a V-Piano added and that's it. The internal sequencer and the pads are two seperate hardware entities that don't really work together. It's an absurd hybrid of hardware Roland had lying around and fitted into one unit that looks really pretty, but is an inferior design to my my dated Fantom G6. It's just a lazy cash grab. The Korg Kronos with its 1995 OS design is even worse and has less features than the good old Korg M3. Buying a Workstation these days is just a waste of money.

Montage does not have the V-Piano engine, Supernatural Acoustic, VA synthesis with the Roland Model expansions, tonewheel organ engine, or internal multisampling. Montage’s better APs and electro-mechanical EPs eat up 4 parts, because they kept using the same PCM Motif patch structure, and it doesn’t have any other specialized engines for those sounds.
