I always wanted one, but couldn't afford it for a looong time. I finally bought one for 350EUR from Austria. It arrived two hours ago. I love it so far. People who are claiming that the 505 is obsolete don't have a clue what they're talking about.
I don't think any of these Roland sound modules sound dated at all. I managed to successfully cover a number of chart songs produced by Calvin Harris and they sounded pretty damn close to the original. Often using only the sounds in the MC-505. Before I recently bought a Ronald R-8 the MC-505 was always my "goto" unit for TR-909 drums. It emulates 909 drums better than even some "paid VST instruments" Artirua's Spark is the most dreadful 909 emulation I have ever heard!
I remember seeing it around 1999 or 2000 when a friend brought it home and showed it to me when I was visiting. I was blown away. He let me mess with it for a long time - maybe over a couple of days. I was sure that I had totally wasted my money buying other useless equipment, software, and computers... it kind of depressed me since at that time I knew he had one and was going to exploit it for all it had, and I didn't have any more money and was at my wit's end for where I was going in life. A few years later I got sucked into the slimy pit of DAWs... namely FL Studio ...which made me tweak every little knob and setting until I got sick and forgot how to make music.
Respectfully id say i did not understand "the real band tuning"____ :) But it is too late. No one read this vidéo comments anymore. That were good machines. Not only for beginners.
My uncle had an MC-505 when it came out, he gave it to my older brother as a christmas present in 1999 but he only used it a few times. Then in 2007 my brother said I could have it so it's been in my stack since and it's still my go to especially for TR-808 or TR-909 drums, it also has some instrument sounds from the JV-1080 ( I do have also have a JV-1080 ).
Sweeet...how much do you think it compares to the JV 1080? Is it just a few sounds or all patches plus some? i just bought the XP 50 which is a JV 1080 with keys more or less. But I think its a bit hard to program with all the menus and would like either the mc505 for the jV 1080 sounds but with more hands on control or mc909 for the sampler...Thanks!
The MC-505 has a different set of patches and waveforms. The Groovebox is more tailored to 90s dance/rave music. I believe many of the MC-505's sounds are from the HipHop and Vintage Synthesizer SRJV expansion boards. The MC-505's filters are mapped the same way as the JV-1080 or XP-50 so it is possible to use the filter knobs on the Groovebox via midi to be more "hands on" with the filters.
I like how there is so much bashing on here. I'd really like to hear what any of these people can make with this. I've seen people do some amazing things with this 505 more than most people in a full studio.

Roland, in the 80s we made iconic machines that made lots of techno and other things you love, Now in the 90s we got kinda drunk and have no idea what we are doing!

I always wanted one of these but ended up with a Yamaha RM1x which was a 16 part seq with less polyphony. I always wanted the RPS feature, but I got something similar with the Korg Karma I picked up a few years later. Still, this one was always a great box.

had this one and a 303...but went to a yamaha rmx1 then rs7000 and never looked back...the instruments on this sounded to metallic for me but to each their own.
Use mine as a MIDI controller for other hardware, as it has a ton of bars and sequencing capability. It's synth engine's pretty weak, but the pads are often handy (for that polyphonic after touch)
Anyone have one of these MC505s for sale? I love 90's Analog Modelling. It has such nice thin sound. I have a Rhodes Suitcase 73, Mini-Moog and an old 808 to trade. I can make up the difference in cash and ship internationally.

I have two of these, and whilst they are not the greatest things I have ever used, this demo is fucking embarrassing and more than enough to put off anyone going near one. However, if you can grab one cheap I recommend it as there is depth to these machines, if you give them the time., it's just that Roland don't want you see it here. And yeh, The d-beam was just tedious. Whenever anyone got near mine it was all they messed around with. I had to remedy this with the aptly named magic marker.
Depending on how much you would delve into it I'd say £250 is a high price right about now, anything below is a good deal if you ask me. I'd prob be looking to pay about £175-199 at this moment. They fluctuate quite from time to time. Just make sure it is in good nick. Lot of bad ones out there
evenios I have a 909 too but I haven't use it much. I do like the patches and they admittedly sound way cleaner, but the appregiator is better by on the 307.
The effects assigned to it are cool, though; especially fun if you're controlling analog hardware via midi and do that record stop thing. Never actually used it in a recording, though.
