The SE-02, the first Roland Boutique synth of the Designer's series made in collaboration with Studio Electronics.
Interested in the SE-02?
You are looking for a guided tour of the synthesis of the SE-02?
I was very curious to test this synth after being an owner of a Studio Electronic
In this video a go through each section of the SE-02's synthesis with audio exemples and a spectrum analyser to visualise the audio result.
- The Controls
- The Oscillators
- The Mixer
- The Filter
- The Envelopes
- The LFO
- The Delay.

The small knobs are iffy but then you can store sounds. This and a used KingKorg are hot stuff.

I’m referring to Edgar winters Frankenstein. mainly the part after the drum duel. One oscillator is modulated by the other (supposedly) to get a fourth interval that flutters back and forth almost like an arpeggio. Thanks for your reply. I am doing this song in a cover band and really want to get these parts down

Nice detailed demo. Yet, watching you turn the knobs, you can see them wobble - they look kind of flimsy. Looking forward to a demo of the sequencer along with the song mode!

Buchla and Waldorf module knobs can wobble too, sometimes it's a design thing and not a weakness - just don't "man-handle" them not everything is chassis-mounted like the Korg Monologue - rock solid

What would you recommend to pair this with to create very interesting arps? I really liked the arp knob in system-1 from the reviews, but maybe there are standalone devices for that?

I am a big fan of the Arturia KeyStep - it can meet keyboard (it is better than most small keyboards) and can control arps and sequences. Very good support and software, plus various ways to sync the KeyStep to DAW, other clocks etc.

Hey Nu-Trix! I've been thinking of buying this because not only is it a great instrument of its own, but also because of it's midi out capabilities. I usually run my iOS centric setup on an iPhone XS Max, and although eventually I do plan to get an ipad pro, at the moment I'm waiting for the new one to come out to see if it is a substantial upgrade. On the meanwhile, and given that I've wanted a Minimoog-like device since like forever (too bad Behringer's clone does NOT have midi out), this one has always been at the top of my list eventhough I prefer the Behringer's sound. Do you think this is a convenient unit to map different iOS synths' parameters to? or is it too much of an inconvenience to use in this way? Are the knobs infinite or do they have a range??? Or whatever the right terminology for that might be lol! To me, it's like.. .I can spend 20 minutes mapping everything I need to knobs that make sense on this unit, and then simply use that to control my gear as opposed to having to use a tiny screen. I can deal with this for recording, inputing sequences and stuff, but I think it would be very pleasing to at least be able to output the task of sound design to an actual interface and better if it makes sense with it (as opposed to like a general midi keyboard with a few knobs which after a while I always forget what they were even supposed to be doing). The only problem I think I have with it now that I have the money to buy it and am therefore researching more about the topic, is the whole need to supply power. You do mention it cannot run on a battery, but could I use an external battery to power this? or is this also part of the batteries that simply won't be able to provide the required power? It wasn't very clear to me if if couldn't run on an INTERNAL battery simply, or if it really is just THAT demanding. I'm not sure but if this whole battery pack thing could be done it would be a blessing because the unit is so tiny and convenient, it seems like a perfect portable solution to interface with my iphone. Plus, the added sequencer really is appealing to me and by far a more convenient thing to have than slightly better sounding Minimoog sounds (Behringer's clone). Using some Bluetooth midi adapter you can find on Amazon for like 40 dollars, it makes for a very compelling little device to control my gear. Hell, even without the bluetooth midi it would be a massive upgrade as far as I can tell. By the way, I actually know about you since not too long ago and am subbed because I saw your iOS content! I was pleasantly surprised when researching about this to find a video about it done by you. Instant click! Gotta thank you for your in-depth review of Jim's Groover Rider GR-16. It is by far one of my favorite music apps and I post-poned buying it for a really long time until your review pushed me over into actually doing it. Now I use it all the time even though I HATE relying on non-AUv3 workflows generally. Not gonna lie though.. if it were AUv3 as Drambo it would be even better, but it's amazing nonetheless. Anyway, cheers man! Really nice video!

Hi, this unit is the only one that is real analog. It needs real power. I guess a battery providing enough power would work. But it needs more power than the iPhone battery charger.
@EnriquePage91
@EnriquePage91 4 года назад
@@Nu-trix thanks for replying I appreciate it!! I can imagine it would take more than the iPhone charger, hopefully it's still doable with the right battery but anyway, it isn't a deal breaker anyway. I guess I'll check the voltage specs, hopefully they are listed on amazon or somewhere easy to locate! Thanks once again man

Thanks for covering the SE-02. How about the video on the v1.1 firmware they just released, and an update on the boxes that the new features tick? (keyboard input on sequencer, PWM LFO depth etc...). Would be nice to have your overall opinion on this synth considering those latest improvements. Also would like to know your opinion on the Filter stepping polemic on this product, does it really matter?
@Nu-trix
@Nu-trix 6 лет назад
I’ll get my hand a se-02 demo this week to test the new update. I haven’t heard about the filter stepping polemic. What seems to be the problem? Any link about the topic. I’ll do my own testing.
@alexandrosroussos
@alexandrosroussos 6 лет назад
Many comments on the internet mention that the filter has a hearable stepping because it's computer controlled and its resolution is not suffisent to have a smooth cutoff progression. I think it can be heard mainly when resonance is at high levels. Actually SE has announced the SE-02 EX-Box which is an expander that adds an external filter and RCA outputs to the SE-02, kind-of recognising they don't like how the internal filter sounds when controlled digitally. It will sell for $89.

Hi there thank you very much for this nice video. I have an ealier model the XP-50 and I would like to understand from bottom up how to use it to compose in a Logic pro. Do you know if there is a tutorial on it?
@Nu-trix
@Nu-trix 5 лет назад
I don’t have a xp-50 at hand but I do have a jv-2080 and they are very similar in synthesis structure. I’ll try to make a video about it during the holidays.
@tilleyroadaffairproduction6752
@@Nu-trix Wow that would be a fabulous holiday present. I have been reading the manuals and playing with it but can't make sens of it as I am a visual learner, I need to see the process of pressing buttons and seeing, hearing what happens. I also would really appreciate some visual explanation about all the ports and jacks and how to use them in todays technology. For exemple, the stereo and mono jack: Stereo is obvious if you are connecting to a pair of speakers but what about a saffire pro 40 input? What to do with the midi ports are they useful? And guitar pedals... Can you use your pedal board to design sounds? I have so many questions and RU-vid is great but not interactive, so I cross my fingers you can find time to answer them. I also feel that we are a a time in our history where it is very important to reuse and recycle instruments from the past to minimise our global footprint. The less we through out old gear the better it will be for everyone. Anyways, any info would be well received. Thank you and happy holidays to and your loved ones!

I was wondering if you can run the output of the TR-09 into the input of the SE-02 and somehow add fx to the 09’s sound. Is that possible?
@Nu-trix

The signal getting into the MIX IN is simply mixed with the SE-02 output. The delay cannot be applied to this signal.

Yeah you can ad the filter to the signal of your 09 sound

What I see is a nice sounding little synth machine that just cries out, "I'm a Sequencer Not a Lead Mono" As that, she don't need no pitch or mod wheels, most keyboard controllers have the wheels if you want em anyway. As far as the Release, i don't need that on a sequencer, lead synth yeah for sure.
