For very little cost you can convert your digital recorders internal IDE (PATA) Hard Disk Drive (HDD) to a Solid State Drive (SSD)
SATA TO PATA IDE Converter Adapter Plug&Play 7+15 Pin 3.5/2.5 SATA HDD DVD BG
The VS2480, VS2400 and VS2000 with only go as far as 120g of storage.
At some point Hard Disk Drives will fail. They have moving parts inside them. Supposedly Solid State Drives will last longer. SSDs are specified to last for many terabytes worth of in and out.
I have not gone through a HDD failure yet and now I am even more secure in that regard.
Also note: I use an external old school SCSI drive to copy files to. The VS2480 has a SCSI port on the back. I purchased a 73gig new old stock SCSI HDD.

Actually the Roland VS-2480 can use up to 137.4 GB (=128 GiB). I have a 160 GB external IDE drive (connected with an IDE to SCSI converter card to the SCSI port) and an internal 120 GB IDE installed, and the external one has 12 partitions (SCSI0:1-11), the internal has 11 (IDE0-10). Each of the partitions are 11.5 GB ≈ 10,7 GiB, except the 12th partition on the external one that is a little smaller. Not important, I just wanted to mention it.

Hi Alan...Thus far I have noticed stability (not that it was ever lacking before for me), slightly faster start up project load project save and shut down (nothing drastic), no need to ever have to defrag again because it is ssd, then the obvious improvements of quieter (disconnect the HDD fan), lighter weight, tons of storage drive space.

This is the adapter sata to pata ide plug&play 7+15 pin 3.5/2.5 sata hdd dvd bg that I used. The first time I preformatted the add drive to fat 32. The second and third time i did this conversion i did not preformat i let the vs format the drive and it worked. I see these adapters for sale on eBay and newegg and Amazon. Good luck

Hello there.... I have encountered a problem on my 2480..... "I have a lot of work from down through the years on all the drive partitions" And today I replaced a new DVD insert burner replacing the original CD burner, which I just received from eBay purchase... anyway, after loading it in and turning on I was directed to a system test page.... I don't really know what I done.... but when turning of and back on ..... my message appearing now is " Not found any formatted Drives" can you help.... Thanks in advance. Johnny

Hi IanCaneFire, Great video! Still trying to determine which adapter is the correct one? The first one I have purchased (RXD 629A 2008) was pictured when I ordered it but received (RXD 629 A-7) which didn't work on my 2480 with the same SDD in your video. I had thought I needed the card printed with (RXD 629A 2008) ? if you have a second could you give me a little more info on the card that worked? So I an order the correct one Thanks in advance, Lance

Awesome its great to know this for sure works i have too of these sata convertors thank you.Its interesting after the vs-2480 formats the drive I'm wondering if you will ever have to format again since ssd's don't need defragging.And since the vs-2480 has no defragging the only way to do it was reformat the drive hmmm ? well maybe it would possible since windows 7 has the trim feature and the vs would not.

Hi Ian, I appreciate the video btw, I also have a few questions for you. I wonder how the Adapter and SSD setup is holding up after some months, do you have a number of projects working without issue? Also, the waveforms on the tracks on the VS-2480, do they tend to show the waveform data quicker than the older standard (IDE) HDD? Just wondering as the waveform data may not be a function of the SSD/Adapter but a limitation on the PCB of the VS2480. Would appreciate your thoughts and reviews now that you have had some time with the new setup.

Hi thanks so much for the video! I still have a VS2480 I bought back in 2003, used it for about 12 years straight and then started producing with DAWs, Logic all the way now! :) Haven't switched on my Roland for about 4 years now! My question is, is it possible to remove the internal HD and copy over the data to a PC or Mac...? Would the data need to be converted from Roland data to wav files? I have tones of music on the VS2480, for starters my bands 3 albums plus lots of demos etc... anyway, thanks! Any advice would be very much appreciated! :)

You will need to use a converter's software. Or you can get a VFire and an older desktop. Or you can record everything out of the VS into another recorder live. Here is a link that will show you what the files will look like once you pull the HDD switch the pins to slave from master and place it in a desktop...www.rolandvs2480.net/2480-FAQs/Roland%20VS2480%20Hard%20Drive%20Recovery%20Procedure.htm

@@ianglispy2885 Thanks for your reply. Actually yes recording everything out live might be the most straight forward solution... although lengthy in time! But if one can send out 8 individual tracks at a time then not too bad either... I probably have around 60 projects in there at least, over 10 years of recordings! Thanks for the idea!

Hi Ian. Thanks, you made it look so easy. I have a VS-2480HD and the original drive died the other night.. I took the caddy out and got a Kingwin ADP-06 Bridge Board and a Team Group L5 Lite SSD. The ADP-06 is set permanently to MASTER mode. The pins are only for the direction (SATA to IDE, or IDE to SATA). No luck. When set "IDE to SATA". it never gets past the Initialize screen. When I set it "SATA to IDE", it does advance past the initialize screen, goes through the blue setup bar, but then says "no drive found" (or something to that effect. It definitely does not say "no formatted drive found"). I have a Crucial SSD here, but that does not work either. I tried taking a older 3.5" HHD and attaching it to the bridge board. But there is not enough clearance for me to fit it back into the caddy. I am thinking I should get the exact same Bridge Board and SSD you used here...
@IanCanefire
@IanCanefire 7 лет назад
Mark "M.E." Edwards hi. you need to use the exact bridge i used in the video. i have heard that others do not work. also i formatted the ssd drive to fat 32 before putting it in the vs2480. now in theory that should not matter, because the VS is going to format the ssd. i did it anyway. so i knew the ssd was able to work before putting it in the VS. good luck.

Thank you so much for the prompt reply, Ian. The ADP-06 was only $8 and locally available which is why I gave that a try first. I shall track your unit down. I will also try formatting the SSD to fat 32 and even try it with this board since the board you used won't ship til Monday at this point (today is Saturday). It appears the model # is RXD-629A7-7 though I can't tell who the manufacturer is. This appears to be it. Ken Totushek in the description below the Video look for that specific one adapter on eBay. When I bought mine I ordered a few because I had a few vs units. Others are known not to work. Some sellers on eBay say it is the DVD type of adapter with those specifics but you need to match the picture with it to make sure. Thus I added the picture to the video. Good luck.

Great video. My 120g hard drive has finally died and then came across this video. I have a couple of questions though. Why is it necessary to completely take apart the vs2480 to only install the ssd and chip into the caddy? I presumed I would only need to take out the caddy and open it up to remove the old hard drive? Which brings me to my next question, how do I open up the caddy to remove and replace the hard drive. Many thanks in advance for any replies 😊

Hi Ian, Great video! I own the smaller VS 2400CD and have on occasion got an error "No IDE installed"! This has happened twice in about a year and all I've done is to take out the drive and re-installed it, dirty connection perhaps. This has worked, but I'm wondering if I can use your method on my recorder? If so, do you notice much difference on speed? My HDD is the original 40gb one, so if it isn't possible, do you think I can stick in a larger IDE HDD? Sadly, unlike your machine, mine doesn't have a SCSI port, so I have to laboriously transfer one song at a time to my PC. Be grateful for any advice Ian, thanks a lot.

That's cool. There's some out there called VirDir that enables you to do file transfers. It's a bit of a Rube Goldberg process but at least it enables you to store your data on your PC.

Blair Cromwell look at the picture at 3:01. Yes you need to take the back off the vs2480. then go into the cage around the hdd. then go into the caddy and secure the adapter and molex power cable then add the ssd to that. Should take 15 minutes.

@rramos07
@rramos07 6 лет назад
Unfortunately your hard drive is failing. I was also receiving the message "Drive Busy" or "IDE not available" while trying to record and even save my projects. Eventually it just continued freezing and would not save any progress so I have a lot of re-recording to do. However, if you are able to get an IDE to SATA bridge and look up VS Wave export free software, you can backup your VS project data onto another computer. Of course depending on the current state of your drive, it may recover everything or parts of tracks. Now that I have my data backed up, I will be disposing of the IDE to not be tempted to use it again in a pinch and replace it with the SSD shown above. I'm just worried about purchasing a defective PATA to SATA adapter since the specific ebay seller is not listed in the comments section. As far as your data recovery, good luck and let me know if you run into anything else.

Hi, I’ve done everything as described but can’t even get passed the initial setup drive page. How do you get the adapter card to master?
@IanCanefire
@IanCanefire 6 лет назад
gary lowe the adapter has some prongs on it. There is a small plastic fitting on the prongs. Depending on which prongs it it covering determines whether the adapter is set to master or slave. Look closely at the adapter and you will see for yourself how to set it. It is a common thing with he'd and such so look at a RU-vid video on the subject. Cheers.
