Rolex DeepSea: Simply the Best Rolex 

My Sea Dweller is 40 years old and it and I have made many saturation dives in the North Sea, deepest being 235 meters. Beside the escape valve, the self winding as opposed to battery, which will not drain in the cold in 3c water temps and overall ruggedness makes it suitable for the rigors of commercial diving and its looks to a Black Tie night out in London. JFH, former diver, North Sea Offshore (1981-1989).

This is the most overlooked yet iconic timepiece built by Rolex, The most hardy tool watch Rolex has ever created for the public, Also another point to note is this is the First Ever Rolex to be made commemorating an Individual, James Cameron, even tho earlier watches were referred to by Celebrities names like Steve McQueen for eg., Rolex didn't specifically build it for them, Unlike this one, which was actually built for JC, Among the many firsts, there is also the Two-Tone Dial, If Rolex is the 👑 of all watches, then this is surely the 👑 of all Rolexes, The sheer magnitude of this timepiece is immeasurable,

I’ve had mine for over a year now, full black face, not the JC, and will say it is by far the favorite watch in my collection and has become my daily driver. One day I tried to wear my Hulk, but took it off for the DeepSea before I left the house. Anyone who actually spends time with this watch will love it. Trust me ...... wear it for 2 months and then try to go back to a Sub ..... you’ll be hard pressed to do it. I promise.

Totally agree with your conclusion. I bought my JC 2 years ago and it fits to my wrist like an organic extension. I never found it too bulky or heavy, it’s just a perfect timepiece with a unmistakeable aura.

5’ 8” 175lbs and I do not find it difficult to wear. I had a Daytona and sold it for the JC because for me it is the “Bugatti” of watches. Was overbuilt for no other purpose than to prove it could be done. I think the face is stunning and expect it to be in my family for generations. I have always worn dive watches and although I am not big, smaller watches just seem too feminine and dainty for me. This watch is substantial to say the least, but I do not find it over the top.

I almost pulled the trigger on a black model recently at AD, but I think it has to be the DBlue for this watch. It looks amazing on wrist, much more presence than a sub, it’s a true tool not a hybrid dress watch, unlike what most rolex steel sports have become today.

The ‘glide-lock’ clasp is so perfectly adjustable that I do not notice the weight whatsoever.

The DSSD is the 911 Turbo of Rolex dive watches. A 911 is beautiful, great car.... but the Turbo is the Turbo.

The watch is simply fantastic. Yes it is heavy like an Omega Planet Ocean. I sold my Submariner and a Milgauss Z Blue. No regrets so far. If I was forced to have just one watch, my JC edition would be the one.

The DSSD is a great watch. From an engineering standpoint it is outstanding but I can tell from own experience that the Deepsea is a big (tall) and heavy watch and not suitable for daily use in the office imho. It is built like a tank and a bit flashy ( a lot of wrist presence) but even on my 8.2" wrist it is a lot of steel on the wrist. It wears surprisingly good for its size and height but you feel the watch all the time. I owned this watch with the black dial (126660) for 16 months and I did not wear it enough. That's why I sold it and bought back de Rolex SD43. I would have loved to own both but for me I am perfectly fine with just 1 Rolex in my fine collection and the Seadweller 43 tics all the boxes for me. The Deepsea could be perfect with less height, and smaller writing on the ring lock system, less text on the dial and the date placed a little bit more to the right.

Quick video feedback- either have background music/sound effect up high enough to hear it fully without deafening your voice or don’t use it at all. The level, it’s at in this video, makes it sound like my phone is going off in the other room. Background sounds should compliment and not distract.

Great review, it gave me a boost to reevaluate my dssd. In deed it is great watch, however in my opinion would have been better with 22 mm starting width bracelet (from the case) and end to 20.5 mm to the clasp. The bracelet thickness would have been better with 1.5 mm additional thickness. Would make the watch far more balanced to case/bracelet appearance. I own the 1st generation of dssd and am not exactly happy with it's 21 mm bracelet, I have yet to see the current version with 22 mm bracelet. Smells like trouble though, I'll want one which means my 1st would be obsolete. Why Rolex figured the 21 mm wasn't the best a decade later, after all for a brand with such high standards, one would expect a more long term design planning. The GMT on the Jubilee, well despite the positive reviews to me looks like a 200 m Seiko. Perhaps an Oyster variation would have been better.

I've got the same seamaster as you in black, and I have one noticable scratch on my sapphire. When my uncle, who was like a second father to me, passed away, I got very upset when I heard the news. My wife went grab my hands and scratched it with her wedding ring. Now it's a memory of my late uncle.

I would love to own this watch from Rolex, my only concern would be its size, but I regularly wear the JDM srp777 which is quite big too!

IMHO this is the best Rolex, especially what concerns the size und the look in general. It is the ultimate men's watch, at the same time sporty and classy. My 116660 black dial is since I bought it in 2016 my favorite watch with the most wrist time.

If you can only have one, the D-Blue is best time piece in the Rolex catalogue.

Everything you said is true it's an awesome piece. But with a 6.2 inch wrist it's a non starter for me. It's just too big I fear it's probably to big for a average wrist even as just a day wear much less a daily wear.

I wear 126660 and I have absolutely no interest in any other Rolex except DJ41 blue on jubilee that I just purchased. However a more practical watch with similar specs could be Omega Plorporof with its much lighter weight due to titanium. I like titanium/gold combo a lot. Dblue is very heavy 🤧

I authenticated my Rolex DSSD 116660 by SN:VMXXXXXX, etched Rolex crown at 6 o'clock position, the clear text, ROLEX markings R on the minute index and X on the hour markings.

3900 mtr water resistant. At that depth you have a total different problem than that of your watch not waterproof. And if you ever loose it at that depth you probably will not find someone to get it for you so this whole 3900 mtr is nice but just a gadget. That said it’s a beautiful watch

Excellent video! As a marine biologist and dive watch fan I have the pleasure to own and use several fine dive watches from Seiko, Omega and Rolex. My most trusted tool is my Sea-Dweller 4000 116600. 40mm of bomb proof perfection. That said, I do want a Deep Sea! Rolex have sorted the awful proportions of the 1st iteration and the watch is now a phenomenal tool - although Sinn's UX can go deeper. I prefer the classic black over the James Cameron but wish they hadn't written al over the face! I just need an AD to sell me one now and this is where Rolex fails. The buying experience is terrible - traipsing around being told you can't get one, before abandoning and buying mail order from random grey dealer at +20%...

Isn't necessary an arm like Popeye. Many models are heavier., however they have not glidelock.

I agree with this video 100%.. The only thing i don't like is the blue dial version. to me its tacky. The black dial is king. Let remember that although the blue dial is called the "James Cameron" He wasn't wearing the blue dial when he went down the trench, he was wearing the black dial deepsea. I understand that it is a commemorative version, but why? if the original version he wore is available lol...The black dial DSSD is the mans watch. The ultimate Rolex hands down.

Sinn UX, movement good upto 5000m and case upto 12000m for £2k smaller and thinner than the Rolex and accurate upto 10 seconds a year. Far more impressive in many ways that the Rolex.

Just letting you know I have a 2016 mark 1 rolex sea dweller deepsea bo ught it new in 2016 for just under 8000 I love it its the 44 mm big one

Mine is 6 years old now I got it in 2017 Deepsea black dial it's the best Rolex they make there is a waiting list to get 1 there was only 1 the 1 I have in the shop when I bought it I just walked in and bought it I have not been diving yet but there's time I shower with it on when I wear it I swiim with it on it's a great watch the end

Bandwidth: 21 mm? 22 mm?...

Someone enlighten me. Even with an atmospheric diving suit you can’t go much below 650m. So what’s the point of a 1,200m Sea Dweller let along a 3,900m watch. And if it goes deeper in a submersible then it’s pressurised so it still doesn’t need to go so deep.

love your channel but there is this bell/sonar sound that happens every few seconds and it makes it really hard to listen. I would really appreciate if you could do without it in the video as besides that i really enjoy all your videos!

The SD43 is a much better alternative if you're looking for a larger Super Submariner. It's a celebration of 50 years of professional saturation diving. It's a modern interpretation of the SD, yet remains restrained and true to its lineage. The Deepsea on the other hand is a krachen, a monster of the deep. Too thick and heavy, it's not suitable for daily wear outside the water. Over the top, it makes no sense to me. Aesthetically, the tiny 27mm dial appears lost in the 44mm case. The ring lock is an eyesore. The gradient dial is an acquired taste. The five lines of text are excessive.

I wish someone would review the Charmex Swiss Military 20K. A mechanical, titanium dive watch which greatly exceeds the specifications of the Rolex deepsea at a third the price.

The "original gas escape valve" and "ring lock system" script around the dial absolutely ruin this watch. Tacky would be the best description.

The omega SEAMASTER PLANET OCEAN ULTRA DEEP PROFESSIONAL beats the deep sea hands down at 10925 meters!

Its too big and the current Rolex doesn't do any innovation anymore.
