Finally someone on RU-vid calling this out for what it is. Everyone is going on about how this is going to CHANGE EVERYTHING when in fact it's just Rolex getting a piece of that hot inflated grey market action. Rolex doesn't care if the retail market sucks for normal people. This changes nothing.

except... if you look for that 2 tone sub date on chrono 24. it's like 17-18k. so the last asshole to hold the hot potato race may have already started. Obviously a rolex AD isn't going to purposefully give up money. But the competition will drive prices down. (or... is $1,000 premium worth the cleaning/service and 2 yr warranty) maybe couple months of this... rolex ADs re-adjust their prices. and they're 17-18k grey market folks will have no choice but to go down another notch or so. Weeks after the programs launch...might not see a difference. but will be interesting to see 6 mo. 1yr. 3 yr. 5yrs on... especially with the economy likely to suck in 2023-2024

Naively, when I first heard about this scheme, I thought this might be Rolex’s way to undercut the flippers and the grey market….meaning, prices could drop, demand drop off and eventually, average Joe’s could get a chance to get their hands on their holy grail Batman or Sub. However, so far, and I hope i am proven wrong, but this seems to be Rolex’s way of saying when it comes to flippers and grey marketeers, I don’t want to beat them, I want to join them. With prices in ADs for approved watches now higher than at grey dealers, the flippers and grey dealers position has been strengthened and average Joe’s chances of getting a Rolex grail piece at retail is further away than ever. It’s time for people to wake up and see there are so many better watches out there at much much better value. The consumer needs to start treating Rolex ADs with the same contempt that Rolex ADs treats them.

In 2011, I bought a 3 year old Rolex Milgauss for £3500. Sold it in 2015 for £4000, due to personal reasons, thinking I'd be able to get another at a later date at roughly that price if I wanted. How wrong I was. Love Rolex watches, but I'm not interested in playing the AD game or paying ridiculous prices on the grey market. Omega might not have the same "luxury" appeal Rolex have, but they make equally great watches which look good, perform brilliantly and, above all, can easily be bought brand new or pre-owned at reasonable prices. You can pay today $5750. Customer: I saw maybe my sub was worth $10-12000?? AD: $5000 would be the part exchange value. Customer: I think I’ll hold on to my sub and just take the Pepsi. Rolex selling used will only drive up prices. There will be less supply thru gray market and rolex sure isnt going to sell for less than gray market and include a warranty. So many other watches to get from other brands...thats the solution.
@dannysimenauer5745
@dannysimenauer5745 Год назад
Very entertaining and factually correct. The AD will offer you less for a trade-in then what a grey market dealer would offer, and have you buy a CPO (used) Rolex for more then the current model (new & which you cannot get from the AD). It will be interesting to see how Rolex executes the model, and if this increases the supply of CPO in the AD's showcases or not. A better solution is for Rolex to increase the supply of new watches without flooding the market. So maybe a new customer waits one year to get a new watch, but it is the one the customer really wants. Let's see if Rolex really does roll out the program to all AD's worldwide, and how well it is received by customers.

This is how all of this looks to me Jenni: Rolex is taking the Apple “ecosystem” scheme. Making you captive with them beginning to end. Getting in the list for months/years to get a watch you like, eventually (if you get bored of it) selling it to Rolex so they can resale the same “refurbished-Rolex certify watch” (CPO) more expensive than a new watch from the same model and even more expensive than the worse price of a gray market dealer has to offer (19,000 US for a no date submariner and 62,000 for a panda Daytona in Bucherer). In such way that they are legitimizing the gray market and taking a substantial bite from it. In a few years Rolex will be the only company able to repair/service one of their watches through their ADs by not selling the repair parts needed to independent watchmakers, again, repeating the Apple way. Thanks for the great video
@mintywebb
@mintywebb Год назад
However they are not apple. Apple is an innovative technology company. Rolex are a reaction to innovation that occurred in the 1970s, the rebranding worked, but let's remember they are just refining (to some extent) technology that is a few hundred years old. There is no innovation in a Rolex watch, sticking gold and diamonds on a watch is not innovation.

This is really funny and heartbreaking at the same time. I used to really want a Rolex Explorer, but seeing how the brand changed these years I can't stand having a watch of a brand that does THIS to their customers.

Yep Grand Seiko for me now. I can go in the shop and buy the one I want, which means I will have no need to sell it after market. I also get a better watch. Will just need a nice aftermarket bracelet.

Rolex is truly becoming a joke in the watch world. Granted - a hyped joke, but a joke. Unless selling your watch to the dealer would give you an instant access to a new piece at retail, and unless the prices of the used watches are set up by Rolex on a realistic level (compared to the NEW watch) based on condition this is just going to be a pathetic move from Rolex. Not trying to solve any problems with the flippers but only adding fuel to the fire.

So judging by the prices I've seen on their site Rolex is now saying not only is it ok to over charge for pre owned watches but that the prices out there are not high enough.....yet one more reason I will never buy another Rolex

Rolex isn’t profiting at all other than whatever the AD pays for the certification. The AD’s make more on new watches than selling preowned because they still have to source them from the existing secondary market. This is for keeping prices up to keep the new watches sold far out in time. Why is this so hard for people to grasp.
@ehe-uk
@ehe-uk Год назад
It’s future markets, though perhaps. First buyers now will go to the A.D. (not grey market at some point in the future), influenced by email marketing and exclusive evenings at the AD for BS products etc, for the AD to then scalp that first owner and then flog it at a massive profit under CPO, especially those who don’t know much about watches - exactly like people who buy cars from an AD false sense of buying confidence. Not to mention finance deals along the lines of what car dealers do, phone sample, pay for half of 8 over three years and then either a balloon payment or trade in, and get skinned again that way etc etc, all under the banner of “now you can buy the Rolex of your dreams for little monthly payments“ (that they can’t do at present but I’m sure they will very shortly).

Rolex has done an amazing job marketing. “Let’s make Rolex hard to get.” “Now let’s grow Tudor brand.” Rolex as a company is genius. And many have bought into this. Not Money.

@@Mpayne1472 You have to understand that the prices of CPO watches are highly inflated compared to the gray market, this means that they do not want to end, nor did they want, speculation, but rather it is this that justifies the position of the brand and the continuous increases of prices; both form a perfect symbiosis and need each other

Well most ADs I have walked into have a jewelry store attached to it with pre-owned Rolexs for sale with their insane markup on it. Why would any AD who has a jewely store purchase it and send it to Rolex and have Rolex ship it back to them for them to sell it again?
